He was an artist wannabe. He didn't get into the Arts School in Vienna.

He was actually a fantastic artist, his art was greatly impressive. Some of the best I have seen of that time actually. But, the Arts School had a requirement, human drawings. Hitler could only draw people from a distance. Not close ups of people. So, Hitler was basically fucked and was pissed off ever since. That is why his mustach looks so angry.

Yes, everything else looked fantastic. A bit smudged, but all very good. But, the best he could ever submit to the art-school was a half finished pencil sketch of a human close up. It looked great, until Hitler realised he screwed up the perspective.
