@selecto16 The Big Ben tune is a special version the the chimes of St. Mary's church, Cambridge. They say they follow the words of Psalm 37:

All through this hour

Lord be my guide

And by Thy power

No foot shall slide

Definitely, those chimes were not in use in London in the times of the French Revolution. Anyway, the movie is great and I have enjoyed it a lot. Quite funny Christopher Lee is the hangman...

@Hugues011 I do not intend to destroy the film, it was just a comment about a historical detail. It is a really interesting film with lots of good actors and actresses and a very nice set, especially in the taking of the Bastille and the Place Louis XV - Place la Révolution. By the way, it the French royals were kept in the Tour du Temple, why do they get to the place coming from the rue Royale? Well, it is more espectacular that way. And yes, I do love Paris!

Remember this: Louis XVI was not the last monarch of France; 5 more would follow - I wonder if a monarch might have ruled France better between WWI and II. Also, Louis XVI financed the American Revolution; a revolution that actually worked! No Terror, real democracy and with FDR, JFK and LBJ real rights for the workers and the poor. Mob violence punctuated with the guillotine and run by a man that hid in the sewers is nothing to celebrate.

C'est Marat je crois, mais je ne sais pas.

Il y a un tableau par Jacques-Louis David de l'année 1793, qui s'appelle "Marat assassiné" et ce tableau montre un homme dans une baignoire, mort.

C'est la raison pour laquelle j'assume que c'est Marat.

les partisans de la révolution n'etaient pas les seuls à dénoncer les injustices et demander des réformes et une monarchie constitutionelle voire la république, ceus de la contre révolution ont aussi eu de telles positions du moins pour certains d'entre eux.

l'histoire est écrite par le vainqueur. toujours.

The monarchy never cared about the people, that's a fact. Otherwise, why would they be the only ones paying taxes, for over centuries?

Not the nobility nor the clergy paid taxes, on which was a whole economy based, but the working class.

the monarchy kept trying to tax the nobles but they opposed it; in fact, louis xiv introduced some new taxes like the capitation which affected the nobility, and also increased indirect tax over the taille.

it was not beneficial for the monarchy to have so many exceptions, but it was very difficult to introduce change after these privileges had been accrued

the reason the estates general was called was for the very reason that the king needed to even the tax burden
