First of all, there is no such thing as dark metal. That's about as valid a genre as viking metal. Second of all, atmospheric is not a genre.

Early Agalloch was neofolk/blackened doom metal. They shifted to neofolk/doom metal with "The Mantle". With the release of AATG, they were straight up doom metal/post-rock. Now, they've returned to neofolk.

Dang.. I mean.. I used to be into a lot of Fear Factory, and know they used a lot of CG effects -- and their live performance suffers tremendously as a result of this. I was afraid the same might be the case for Agalloch -- great albums, but poor live performances. This however does not disappoint, audio wise! Could improve on the stage performance, I suppose, yet would more energy take away from the music? Difficult to decipher.

Agalloch don't focus on live performance because they all have lots of other things going on. D.A. is a college professor, J.W. is a dad. They all have other bands they play for too. They play live to promote new albums and give their die-hard fans a chance to meet who's behind the music. So if their live show is a little shaky at times, please keep it in perspective. As far as their sound: all music comes from other music.
