@hastyberford they do belive it or not, everything about the guitar is all about his experience. the neck is unfinished so it breaths beter and your natural hand oils go into it and make it feel amazing! and the cavaties are made to take weight out of the guitar and let the air age the guitar nicely the frets are stainless steel... every little thing, just like eddy said, is about what he knows and has experienced over 40 years of playing.
In the United States, tobacco use is responsible for about one in five deaths annually (i.e., about 443,000 deaths per year, and an estimated 49,000 of these tobacco-related deaths are the result of secondhand smoke exposure).1

Eddies "Sound" on his first albums are what made me a fan, it was natural unbridled bloody fuckin rock and roll on a whole other level, 11 before 11 existed...when he started getting that "chorus" sound, I kinda lost interest. Listen to "unchained" Fucking Balls !! I miss the simpler production days, but what do I know, he's a GOD, I am but a disciple !! Eddie, PLEASE rewind the clock a little !!
This just confirms that EVH is no businessman. He and his brother destroyed Van Halen when they were the biggest band in the world, all so they could "be in charge" and flex their egos. As for this $3,000 guitar, I have a Samick Avion that sounds better, and I paid $300 bucks for it brand new. You can have every genius guitar tech on earth at your disposal, and still not come close to accomplishing what one man did by himself, as this proves. Sometimes more is less and less is more.
Anyone who says EVH's current setup sounds better than his old rig is either blinded by their love of his playing, or just flat out ignorant about sound altogether. If you look at the live clips of Eddie in concert recently and then compare them to the ones from about 1995 and back, there is absolutely NO comparison. His former sound is absoutely enveloping and enormous, and his current rig sounds as if it's coming out of a tin can. Eddie on his own = awesome. Eddie with hangers on = crap.
Pretty much everything he mentioned that changed (cable jack, pots, frets, tuning pegs, etc) would have been brought about because of the move from Peavey to Fender. These are not major overhauls brought on by innovation or Ed's genius.
The only major difference between this guitar and org. Wolfs is the neck. The org Wolf had a full birdsye maple neck. This guitar only has a birdseye fretboard cap. And that's not a positive change.
"Thanks Eddie, for the EVH Wolfgangs! I own one, the Vintage White; and I'm here to say that "They ROCK"! I've NEVER played a better instrument! Once again, "Thank You Eddie!"
Basswood? BASSWOOD? Why is Eddie doing completely the opposite of what he used to do when he had an amazing guitar sound? "I'm tone searching"? Fuck off, you had the tone.. Now you're just screwing around.
@Nickpatient AGREED! I was about to buy this piece of shit Wolfgang then I figured out that it was BASSWOOD! I think that a 1,000 dollar and up guitar shouldn't be made out of fucking basswood. I thought that it was a mahogany or at least an ash body. This piece of shit that EDDIE FUCKING VAN HALEN calls an instrument may as well be made out of plywood!
@MetalGuy5150 Plus, I mean, Eddie is using light picks nowadays too! He's doing everything completely the opposite of when he had the tone everyone wanted. Basswood has no bottom end. I know this because my only solid body electric is made of basswood. It's light and shit but it aint no tonewood. I'm just really dissapointed with Eddie nowadays.
@Nickpatient I know what you mean, I saw them live a few years back and it was one of the worst shows that I've ever been to, Eddie was so drunk that he couldn't even play his solos right. I was tempted to call ticketmaster and ask for my money back!
@MetalGuy5150 i would take his word over anyone if he says plywood sounded good ...... let's see theres clapton, hendrix, then Eddie then ummmm........ FUCKING NO ONE heralded since him, do the math and think about it. Why does everyone compare EVERY other guitarist to him, cause there is no one like him
Dunno how many know this: Eddie replaced Dimebags DFH, next to his coffin, with his Frankenstrat. That right there was a MEGA 1up in Dimes Book. I love Eddie. Very smart man. I do not blame him for being anal about his guitars being mass produced on quality. I know I would not put my name on a POS.
Dimebag and Eddie go hand in hand, 2 of the Gods in my books
You wont. If you really want it, it gets expensive. he does use a lot of effects and rack units, speaker tricks, Cabinets, ect. But in the end you still wont be able to Duplicate Ed's sound. Ed sounds like Ed.
All that talk from a legend and yet nobody in the world thinks this guitar is as good as any other guitar of the some price range. Fuck the Wolfgang. This guitar is mass produced in Japan by the way. He makes it look like he has some control over each production. $1299 - $1499 ? Are you kidding ?
@ariexmae Japan makes outstanding guitars. Ibanez, particularly the Prestige series are MIJ and go for the same price. At that point it comes down to preference.
@guitarguy7480 I didn't say they made bad guitars, did I ? .. I said they were not made with the care and observation of these guys, which they are clearly suggesting.
Eddie's never used a distortion pedal. Tone comes from the fingers, and when EDDIE'S fingers are touching a guitar, the guitar itself gets a contact high. That's where the phase effect comes from.
That is a load of crap. He uses all kinds of effects, including distortion. One of his favorite touring rigs had Eventide Harmonizers, Roland delays, Lexicon Reverb, Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive, MXR Flanger, MXR Phaser, Boss Octaver and a Wa pedal. I will definately agree that only Eddie can sound like Eddie. Many have copied his rig down to the same picks, and can't get the "brown sound". But the guitar straight into the amp is a huge load of BS, and I have proof if you doubt me.
@HEADBANGBALLER Organisms, such as humans, take energy and matter from the things they ingest. EVH IS MADE OF DRUGS in the same sense that the common man is made of the food he consumes. Every time that man touches his guitar, chemicals are entering through the wood, which is an organic compound. Any beginner knows that the wood effects the tone of his guitar, and when your guitar wood is loaded with psychoactives, it's going to produce the phase effect that EVH is known for.
@HEADBANGBALLER Where's your proof then? I never heard or read anywhere that Ed uses a distortion/overdrive pedal. He was referring to distortion, not modulation or delay.
Go to Guitar Geek dot com. In the bottom right of the page you will see Top 100 Rigs. Find his and click on it. And he said in this video @ 2:00 "...guitar, cable, straight into the amp..." Even with no distortion, he is still not telling the truth. Guitar, cable, straight into the amp. He's trying to make it sound as if he's a "purist" or something. Whne you see all the stuff in his rig, you'll be suprised. I sure was.
@HEADBANGBALLER stage rigs are usually pretty far from the studio. You will sometimes see distortion and overdrive pedals in a stage rig to get similar-to-recording tones that you can switch to, instead of adjust the amp to. Eg, his overdrive sound on the album may be a cranked 59 fender twin .. but instead of having a twin he just brings the SD1... smaller, way more reliable and ultimately, by the time it goes through 4 foot PA horns.. sounds about the same.
Look, all I am saying is that Eddie isn't a "cable straight into the amp" purist like he is leading on to be in this interview. Chuck Berry & Angus Young are the closest thing there is to that. But, I will say that Eddie's tone is very much in his hands. I have seen interviews with guys who have played his rig and admitted that they sounded like shit. Only EVH can sound like EVH. He is a founding father of where the guitar is today. Many have got close, but none have duplicated. Eddie rocks!
the guy on the right should have kept his mouth shut and stopped interjecting comments and let the guy speak uninterrupted. Does anyone know why the inside of Eds mouth is black? I know he battled tongue cancer for a time and claimed to have found a cure in Mexico.
Eddie, you're a guitar super legend thats the good news........the bad news is you're guitar cables suck maximum ass!! trust me people, bought two and they were both fucked up in a month! CROOK!! *don't flag as spam*
I should say Eddie, that you are PURELY WRONG... Once you cut the wood from the tree........ it dies, doesn't "breath". Unless you were talking about the humidity.
@AgusRenguero ok smart ass i challenge you to paint your own guitar and put as much clear coat and whatever b.s. you want on it. and then make one of his frankenstein guitars or even buy one of these. I promise you Ed's right. He's played for 35+ years and has done so much to this instrument. And i'm guessing you've maybe played what 10? 15? Now who should i believe?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Knowing how to make (or destroy) a guitar doesn't make you right, been working with wood for over 50 years (as my father in-law has been) makes you right and gives you the knowledge. He told me when we were talking about "breathing wood" that the wood may dry o get humidity over the years, but breath is one of the things that it doesn't do anymore. That's why I've said "Unless you were talking about the humidity.".......
This Guy for those of us Old enough to Remember, he Changed everything With Van Halen 1 1978 Was awsome the tour i saw in Boston what he has Become is a matter of opinion to me, He,s a Legend
@cheesedude5050 maybe he likes how it sounds? who cares if he leaves it on, and from what i can tell, his tone is pretty bad ass. idk if i would make fun of the biggest influence on guitar since hendrix so lightly.
@cheesedude5050 he doesn't really use it that much anymore. With one of these guitars and the 3rd channel on the 5150 III, with cranking he presence. I'm not saying he doesn't use it at all, but before no the never had a choice.
this guy right here is the reason i picked up and learned how to play guitar. saw him live in baltimore in 09 and he plays just as good as he did on the old records prolly even better. ive played the new wolfgang several times and i love it wish i had enough money to get one of my own
You guys are saying that it's "nothing compared to the frankenstien". He didn't want it to Because he took all the knowledge he knew from that guitar. And put it in this Wolfgang. It's 20x better. The frankenstein is Just more iconic. Let me ask you do you even know why he called it that?
@embplaysguitar1228 This guitar and all eddies new products are just manufactured sell-able gimmicks. The Frankenstein is not the most ascetically pleasing, but it's PURE! quality, tone, and it's striking features are what prevented manufacturers from replicating initially, which is part of it's untouchable beauty!
@SpikeMichaels yeah i know.. he had a guitar before that actually and it was the striped shark guitar. and the white guitar on the first album is the frankenstien. because if you look you can see the white guitars black lines underneath the red on the frankenstien. but when it comes to tone eddie says its not what he wannts. that was like his guitar of pure experimentation.
@embplaysguitar1228 well he didn't call it that, the fans did. but you're right. it's twenty times the guitar that the frankenstein was. that's what he learned all his stuff on. it really reflects the fact that life is an ongoing learning experience. he kept messing with the thing for a long time, even well into his career.
thats i like to see. musicians making instruments, cause they know what sounds good. Even if they are more expensive it would be completely worth it.
I've played every guitar there is.... This is the best guitar I have ever had the pleasure to hold in my hands. Seriously,,,,I own em all. The BEST! Tone....pure tone... 25 years of searching and tweaking. Tone!
@aj199508 funny, in a recent interview with sammy hagar on howard stern he said he was watching the charlie sheen interview and said it reminded him of eddie, no shit
So self-congratulatory. (which is to be expected I guess) But you'd honestly think he'd reinvented the bloody wheel! Others have designed AWESOME AXES too, that sound and play every bit as good for them; Vai, Malmsteen, Satriani, Petrucci, Vinnie Moore, Michael Angelo Batio.....to name just a few.
he said they didnt leave any stone unturned, what about the striped design?
frankenstein design on the wolfgang, and then its home, then this guitar will secure its place loud n clear in history, but the wolfgang is nothing compared to frankenstein
Great player but he don't half talk some shit. Of all instruments the guitar has the greatest disparity between scientific research and popularity: If you really wanted to improve the instrument you would employ a room full of engineer and physics PhD's, not a glorified furniture maker. But hey, tradition's more important than tone, right? He's dead right about stainless steel frets, much more durable than nickel.
i know peavey USED to make the 5150's etc but because EVH where a guitar company first he went to fender and then started makings amps under the EVH banner.
Putting aside Eddie's voice and the smoking thing, I bet this guitar sounds really amazing. You can see he put a lot of effort getting "his tone" right. I have an Ibanez Universe (the green one) and truly it sounds like shit. I won't sell it cause I love it, but my Epiphone Les Paul sounds much better, so don't go buying famous guitars just because you love the artist, but them for the EVH tone!
@julianisdope He's only 57 and has already had cancer. Smoking isn't worth dying for, no matter what anyone says. He's just being stupid by continuing. I personally don't have a problem with people smoking, but when you come an inch from death by it...I just don't understand why you'd carry on.
I've owned every version of Eddie guitars starting with an 1985 Kramer Barreta (which was a piece of shit). I will say every time he comes out with a guitar it gets better and better.
shit that's going back years bro the first Eddie endorse guitar was the ST 600 striker evh which i miss playing very much as the Wolfgang is a nice guitar sounds awesome with his amp and I'm a marshal amp freak
@waiwiriz1 I was knew Billy Connolly pretty well BITD. He was the guy that actually made all of Eddie guitar's back at Kramer. EVH picked the body of the original 5150 from a trash can. EVH asked why it was being thrown out..."Because Dennis (owner of Kramer) doesn't want you to use it, he's trying to sell the body with the slanted pick-ups". Billy told me a shitload of stories from the old Kramer days.
shit that's going back years bro the first Eddie endorse guitar was the ST 600 striker evh which i miss playing very much as the Wolfgang is a nice guitar sounds awesome with his amp and I'm a marshal amp freak so what i'm saying is try it you might like it
@waiwiriz1 Dude, I had several Kramers BITD. They all sounded really one dimensional and really thin. I think that had more to do with the Floyd than anything else, but back in '86/'87 we really didn't know a whole lot about how to set them up.
MUST GET THIS Soundtrack !!!! Unchained sounds well too good here !!! Help Me cruel and incredebly helpful youtube :D Gimme this version of unchained :D
Eddie totally makes me want to lay down my hard-earned money to purchase this guitar. I agree with everything he says, and even more so on some points. This guitar is my freakin' destiny. Now if i had the money......
You would think with all the drugs, booze, operation, cancer and shit he's been through, he would at least stop smoking. Can't wait to hear that cigarette voice on his next tour.
Corgan and Eddie? Sweet! I love SP and Van Halen!

I should say Eddie, that you are PURELY WRONG... Once you cut the wood from the tree........ it dies, doesn't "breath". Unless you were talking about the humidity.
AgusRenguero 6 months ago 3

By the way, ripping a guitar of doesn't make you a luthier or gives you knowledge.
He ripped off the guitar and the middle pickup doesn't work because he made wrong the conecctions. That proves you that he is not "that smart".
I've turned an engine apart and have no idea of what it does or what is it made of.
So before yellin', screaming, bitching and calling me a "smart ass"... think... and read a book about trees.

When is Guitar World Magazine going to come out with an Eddie Van Halen Eruption Guitar Solo Lesson ?
After all they are coming out with a new album with David Lee Roth , Might as well start releasing the guitar lesson videos

I think these are great guitars except for one thing:
The pickups, they are a muddy mess.
ThieleM 6 months ago
@ThieleM try starting with less gain. I use gain at number 3
gavquinn 6 months ago in playlist In the Studio
@gavquinn
My gain is at about 3. My solution is to use a better pickup. Something with a lower output. In a Wolfgang I'd drop in a WCR Godwood.
ThieleM 6 months ago
@ThieleM i noticed that too man, you have to really watch the gain and mids with it but beyond that it's nothing short of amazing
Sean2592 6 months ago
Eddie Van Lunatic. This man is a shining example of how to f'k up your legacy.
You can just see what an asshole he is by looking at him.
ThieleM 6 months ago
not only do they sound great, but they feel absolutely amazing. right down to the way the knobs turn...it's a great, smooth feeling instrument.

"to me, what you put in between just deviates from the pure tone." very wise words from a man who never turns off his phase 90.
cheesedude5050 6 months ago 47
I LOLed when I read your post. The opening track was the Unchained riff which is very Phaser heavy. Not to mention the Wah Wah pedal.
HEADBANGBALLER 6 months ago
@cheesedude5050
I think he's tolking about distorsion pedals, but yes it's a little bit contradictory x)
MartyCannava 6 months ago
@cheesedude5050 maybe he likes how it sounds? who cares if he leaves it on, and from what i can tell, his tone is pretty bad ass. idk if i would make fun of the biggest influence on guitar since hendrix so lightly.
cammoronx7 6 months ago
@cammoronx7 im just making a joke man. I love evh too. he's my fifth favorite guitarist of all time, after hendrix, page, gilmour, and stevie.

@cheesedude5050 he doesn't really use it that much anymore. With one of these guitars and the 3rd channel on the 5150 III, with cranking he presence. I'm not saying he doesn't use it at all, but before no the never had a choice.

Sean2592 7 months ago
@Sean2592 he used to use two echoplexes and a univibe modified with a different motor. now he uses rack based delay.

this guy right here is the reason i picked up and learned how to play guitar. saw him live in baltimore in 09 and he plays just as good as he did on the old records prolly even better. ive played the new wolfgang several times and i love it wish i had enough money to get one of my own

You guys are saying that it's "nothing compared to the frankenstien". He didn't want it to Because he took all the knowledge he knew from that guitar. And put it in this Wolfgang. It's 20x better. The frankenstein is Just more iconic. Let me ask you do you even know why he called it that?
embplaysguitar1228 7 months ago
@embplaysguitar1228 This guitar and all eddies new products are just manufactured sell-able gimmicks. The Frankenstein is not the most ascetically pleasing, but it's PURE! quality, tone, and it's striking features are what prevented manufacturers from replicating initially, which is part of it's untouchable beauty!
Yngvar10 7 months ago
@embplaysguitar1228 The classic FRANKENSTEIN is the black and white from the front cover of the first album.....
SpikeMichaels 6 months ago
@SpikeMichaels yeah i know.. he had a guitar before that actually and it was the striped shark guitar. and the white guitar on the first album is the frankenstien. because if you look you can see the white guitars black lines underneath the red on the frankenstien. but when it comes to tone eddie says its not what he wannts. that was like his guitar of pure experimentation.
embplaysguitar1228 6 months ago
@embplaysguitar1228 well he didn't call it that, the fans did. but you're right. it's twenty times the guitar that the frankenstein was. that's what he learned all his stuff on. it really reflects the fact that life is an ongoing learning experience. he kept messing with the thing for a long time, even well into his career.
alpha1shadow 6 months ago
thats i like to see. musicians making instruments, cause they know what sounds good. Even if they are more expensive it would be completely worth it.

So self-congratulatory. (which is to be expected I guess) But you'd honestly think he'd reinvented the bloody wheel! Others have designed AWESOME AXES too, that sound and play every bit as good for them; Vai, Malmsteen, Satriani, Petrucci, Vinnie Moore, Michael Angelo Batio.....to name just a few.

frankenstein design on the wolfgang, and then its home, then this guitar will secure its place loud n clear in history, but the wolfgang is nothing compared to frankenstein

"I can speak to this guitar and it sends out a message" True words of a guitar god.
craaaaazyjaaaaay 8 months ago
Great player but he don't half talk some shit. Of all instruments the guitar has the greatest disparity between scientific research and popularity: If you really wanted to improve the instrument you would employ a room full of engineer and physics PhD's, not a glorified furniture maker. But hey, tradition's more important than tone, right? He's dead right about stainless steel frets, much more durable than nickel.

@maneatingtoilets we all gotta die someday might as well live how you want to.
julianisdope 9 months ago
@julianisdope He's only 57 and has already had cancer. Smoking isn't worth dying for, no matter what anyone says. He's just being stupid by continuing. I personally don't have a problem with people smoking, but when you come an inch from death by it...I just don't understand why you'd carry on.
maneatingtoilets 9 months ago 3
I've owned every version of Eddie guitars starting with an 1985 Kramer Barreta (which was a piece of shit). I will say every time he comes out with a guitar it gets better and better.
4JayeP 10 months ago
shit that's going back years bro the first Eddie endorse guitar was the ST 600 striker evh which i miss playing very much as the Wolfgang is a nice guitar sounds awesome with his amp and I'm a marshal amp freak
waiwiriz1 10 months ago
@waiwiriz1 I was knew Billy Connolly pretty well BITD. He was the guy that actually made all of Eddie guitar's back at Kramer. EVH picked the body of the original 5150 from a trash can. EVH asked why it was being thrown out..."Because Dennis (owner of Kramer) doesn't want you to use it, he's trying to sell the body with the slanted pick-ups". Billy told me a shitload of stories from the old Kramer days.

waiwiriz1 10 months ago
@waiwiriz1 Dude, I had several Kramers BITD. They all sounded really one dimensional and really thin. I think that had more to do with the Floyd than anything else, but back in '86/'87 we really didn't know a whole lot about how to set them up.
