The message here is so touching, but the entire song is so unbearably badass at the same time. I only just heard of Saul Williams, and I'm glad I started with this song.
as i found myself screaming outloud in my head for someone to speak up, i realized that it was me who was shouting for myself to say something. i am the role model, the example for everyone to follow. but forget about the me, and lets remember and live in the "we". with little good examples left out there, its up to us to give what we've got. We make a living by what we get, but we more importantly make a life by what we give.
Makes me think about my father. An irresponsible, cruel man who beat my mom and didn't pay child support when she left. I want him to know I won't ever make his mistakes. I didn't have the good example, but I know better than him. I'm not going to do that to anyone, to my kids, to my wife.
Thanks a lot for this upload! I love the firy thoughtprovoking speeches/songs of Saul Williams. This one is very dear to me. I was lucky myself to have good examples, but I know many people have to go through life without them. This remains a great wake-up call for all of us.
This song, ultimately, is not about social issues. Or at least, not about social issues removed from everything else. It's about Kali, who is everything.
@srabelle Really? As soon as I heard the first sentence II thought that it was his dad. I suppose if you know that his dad was a preacher it makes it easier
A good friend of mine who was the definition of a "pure soul" passed away recent. A few years ago she randomly put this song on while we were driving and says "I think everyone should listen to this song."
@ccdeepblue22 - Dang. That's very unfortunate. I have songs like this too, where people who have passed on listened to them. So i go and listen to them, and for those minutes the song plays i pretend they're alive listening with me <3

So true, so real, so current. I pray we teach in the name of our father. Children, are you ready to listen?

I come back to this daily on a weekly basis to reflect on the troubles and success my dad has created for me. This helps alot.

Stiull my favorite Saul song. The monologue by his dad is amazing, then Saul's lyrics are straight dope following that.
"I'm supposed to be less of an emcee, cuz I never sold a ki. I sold my homework, but yall niggers were to busy hustling to do the dome work"
