  • wtf, his sound is EPICCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC

  • shit! is this serius? I can't believe it! is this live sound? holy mother of Satan! XD

  • Mother of Epicness

  • LaBrie is so epic even the video can't handle the level of awesomeness and almost crashes before the F#

  • lol Petrucci looks like Dave Grohl

  • I want to make this my ringtone.

  • john p looks funny

  • A little known fact. In order to make him sing like that, we had to kick him in the balls. After three years in Dream Theater, he was infertile. His sack was hideously disfigured. That's actually what the song Scarred on Awake is about.

  • @MlKEPORNTOY DISGUISED IN SPIIIIITE OF TIIIIIME

  • @MlKEPORNTOY This sounds like something Mike Portnoy would actually say.

  • why does petrucci have his hair tied back? that is so not metal.

  • aoooohhh! aooooooohh!! aooooooohhhsome!!!!!!

  • Look at Petrucci after the F#, he's like holy shit i cannot believe that just happened.

  • How I miss this band...

  • It actually sounds better than the record.

He had such a powerful voice...

  • LaBrie <3

  • This is incredible

    .

  • Walks away thinkin "oh thats fuckin right bitches"

  • Damn, he sounded awesome there. Too bad he cant hit those notes anymore. John Arch (Fates Warning's first singer)couldve done it! lol...Arch is my favorite singer so I guess I'm biased. I really wonder what DT would've sounded like with John Arch on vocals. Anyone who hasn't heard him with Fates Warning needs to do that now. Check out songs off Awaken The Guardian, and Specter Within. (Valley of the Dolls, The Sorceress, Giants Lore, The Apparition, Epitaph...hell, i love em all.

  • @nathantim

I've been at Dream Theater show this July and James nailed this song like in the old days! His F# was amazing!

  • @NickDrummerful don't believe you.

  • @Rowsol84

why?? you can just find the video here and check it out!

  • @Rowsol84

    It was Moscow concert!

  • @nathantim Ever listen to Kamelot? Roy Khans vocals are amazing. Dude quit the opera to sing metal.

  • Comment removed

  • @timeforfunnification Oh hell yea. im sure you've seen it if you're a Kamelot fan, but here on youtube they have a live version of The Haunting with the beautiful Simone Simmons. mmmmm... but yea, that dude can fkn SING. I think he nails EVERY note on that performance....just type in "kamelot the haunting live". The Black Halo is such a badass album, but I still cant pick out my favorite.

  • @nathantim I have that DVD lol, cold winter's night.... And ironically it was the first Kamelot cd i bought. I listened to them live when I had no idea if they where any good, just bought the live album lol. I was hooked after that, bought the DVD of the show and all the albums.

  • para todos los que odian a LaBrie ... tomen un poco de su dosis de F# yeah

  • so relaxed when singing

    that's technique man

  • Labrie food toxication was the biggest tragedy in rock history.

  • @erikizitoxxx so fucking true

  • @erikizitoxxx imagine LaBrie in good vocal shape singing in "A dramatic turn of events"...it would be one of the best albuns of DT surely.

  • See how he just move around, like : "ok I'm awesome"

  • Holy crap! This is fucking awesome! O_O

  • IT'S CRAZY!!! IT'S NOT EVEN IN THE WHISTLE REGISTER! THAT IS SO FANTASTIC!!!

  • @iSachihiro actually I can whistle up to Bb

  • @fsdream

    Teach me :D

  • James LaBrie should be a character in Mortal Kombat, and this would be his "fatality".

  • @ezequieltcd F***ing brilliant!

  • @ezequieltcd One of the few youtube comments I've ever actually LOLed at. Bravo.

  • Unbelievable!

  • I just j'd in my p's. *clicks replay*

  • As seen at the end of this video, Petrucci was still in Renaissance Guy Mode.

  • The reason James LaBrie can hit such high notes is because he has so many testicles that it makes his singing voice higher instead of lower.

  • Question: the F# is a falsetto? If it is, in which moment does he changes from chest to falsetto? Thanks.

  • @Guitardreams182 he kept a good mixed voice up until the last note when he flipped into a "chesty" (hahaha =) ) falsetto.

  • @Guitardreams182 it's not a falsetto, it's just head voice.

  • @cassioam No it's full voice. Any well trained tenor voice can hit an F#, but his A5's are nuts.

  • oh, man. that's fucking brutal!

  • No matter how many times I hear that F#, and JP's guitar right after, I always get chills! And I have been listening to DT since 1992!

  • yeah... he was the best when he was at his best... ans yes rexboy, youtube certainly could not take so much aersomeness...

  • can you believe justin bieber has almost 500,000,000 views on that gay baby song, when his gay voice can't even come close to hitting this note.

You guys all need to post fake bieber videos dubbed with dream theater/marco sfogli or whatever just to mislead kids to clicking and maybe they'll have a change of musical taste.

  • @maxomilian Please, shut the fuck up about Bieber and get on with your life. Pop music has never been based on technical skill. Just get over it.

  • @minusjason Did you even read my comment?

Wtf are you even replying to? Everyone knows that pop music is based on no talent so that way if we boycott it then maybe people will begin taking notice to the underappreciated.

  • @maxomilian Here's what I was replying to. You said "can you believe justin bieber has almost 500,000,000 views on that gay baby song, when his gay voice can't even come close to hitting this note." To this I responded, pop music has never been based on technical skill. Justin Bieber is a teen pop star, a completely different kind of music from DT. You think DT is upset that his video has more views than theirs? You're yet another person bringing up Bieber on a completely unrelated video.

  • ok so.. who puts dislikes in this video, honestly :S. can they do better ?.

  • I dont get it. Is F# like the note that all high vocalist hit when doing these pitches? Or is it just a name, and not really an F#?

  • @HarvestHollow F# is the note that he's singing here.

  • @HarvestHollow He's singing an F#, but in the 5th octave, or an F#5. An F#5 is going to be considerably higher pitched than an F#4, even though it's technically the same note.

  • @blargyblargster Well I knew it was that octave, but just didnt know if it was that specific note.

  • Still my fave singer..Listen to winter rose..james' band before dream theater..he's awesome there

  • PERFECTION! =D

  • The lag is in the video because without it our heads would explode!!!

  • @RealTizzy Fuck you u copycat piece of cocksucking cunty shit.

  • This is the James LaBrie I have yearned for since 2005(when Octavarium was released). I can appreciate him currently, but it's just not the same

  • *boner

  • I watch this video everyday, no joking.

  • that was awesome.

  • Man that F# was crystal clear.

    Pure pureness !

  • lol, WTF!?!?!?!?!

    Was that Jesus Christ!?

    or GODDAMN JAMES FUCKIN' LABRIE!?!?!

  • @jjordan33 pffft as if Jesus Christ could pull off an F# that well :P

  • WOW!!

  • james just cut all his hair off, and i know he can still hit F# 5

  • :18, I've done my shit, time to go home

  • Jadesaje15,i like Tate too but his vocals seems falsetto with head voice,i received your email in my iPod and looked for take hold on the flame but live tate doesn't reach high notes very well. I'm not criticizing but Tate doesn't reach high notes live on this song, but i'm happy cause i found Dream Theater with Queensryche live playing take hold on the flame and it was epic!Sorry for my poor english cause i'm a Brazilian fan and learned by myself!!

  • Its too bad, I don't think he can actually hit this anymore...

  • @KelLorien yes he can, i asked him on the first leg of the NA tour of 2009 and he said he can do it when he's fully warmed up.

  • @JEDSaje15 Good to know :)

  • That was pretty fuckin' awesome.

  • Shit that was clean!

  • Holy fucking crap men!he did it! IT'S not F# but F#5 even mercury or geoff Tate can reach this freaking note live I love queensryche and queen ,so I can talk surelly about it.Fuck Dream theater hater's,lick my hard cock!

  • @TheFacilidade actually geoff tate can hit that note, "take hold of the flame"

  • epicness

  • Holy fucking shit. NAILED It!

  • Such an insane pitch.

  • Oh James. Why did you have to eat that shrimp?

  • @JacobL221 Fucking shrimps. Knew they were evil

  • @JacobL221 ROFL so true!!

  • @JacobL221 I'm sure at that very moment in time he did enjoy his shrimp. He dipped them in some cocktail sauce and licked his fingers when he was finished. But those shrimps weren't ordinary shrimp. They were hired by Labrie's arch-nemesis to infiltrate Labrie's body and do everything they could to destroy Labrie's awesome metal powers. These Ninja Shrimp or "Shrimptonite" is Labrie's greatest weakness. Who

could say no to delicious jumbo shrimp? But the Metal Gods were on James's side.

  • man all those who said james sucks really should see this video. Its the best performance from a vocalist I've heard which even beats the dvd. And did anyone else notice that in any band's live video the singer's voice always sounds better on the live dvds then in any other performances filmed live, so the dvd voice is probably still edited. This is the only one I've heard where the vocalist really did as it is on the album even better, and its not even professionally filmed!

  • @krazYFaic yeah the DVD's are usually edited

look at Megadeth's Blood in the Water and Metallica's 2 new DVD's.

I expect that their Rust in Peace and Big Four dvd's will both be edited aswell.

sometimes they aren't edited if they're already good (metallica live shit 89)

  • perfect!!!!!!!!!

  • Incredible.

  • Michael Sweet showed this turd how to sing!

  • Comment removed

  • woooh ooooh ooooh, woooh ooooh ooooh, woooh ooooh AAAAH!

  • that note just sounds so great!!! very pure tone!!! it really stinks that his vocal chords got ruptured. that note will never be the same....

  • If this doesn't give you goosebumps, you truly have a heart of ice. Amazing to think that even on a low quality vid like this, the note itself sounds better than the album version.

  • hell yeah I just found I can hit this note. Not as awesomely as James of course, but I can hit it!

  • how can anyone who hears this man sing claim that he isn't talented? all those people who think that labrie is a bad vocalist are clearly not sane. :) AMAZING!

  • woaw goose bumps on my goose bumps ;D

  • What. The. Fuck.

    God-like.

  • Heaps annoying how it skips just before the epic F#

  • fuck yeah

  • PERFECT

  • Epic F#. Perfect.

  • (Hits note)

    *Fuck yeah*

  • I noticed this video lags right before he hits the F#.

Clearly youtube can't handle the awesomeness.

  • You made my day.

  • @RexBoy2000 No it isn't youtube, but the video quality itself...

  • @RexBoy2000 actually, kinda fun fact here.. the camera microphone probably couldn't handle the transition to the F# , which is what caused the little static hiccup you hear. Most camcorder mics from back in those days were pretty horrible for recording anything with high pitches. But it could very well be distortion that happened when uploading to YouTube.. I kinda doubt the latter though.

  • @RexBoy2000 ha ha ha love it....

  • JAMES LABRIE FTW

  • Wow!! They're all so young here! What year is it?

  • 1992. Like the description says.

  • @SAVTA12 it clearly says in the desrciption '92, you must be a dumbass.

  • I love how he always walks off the stage after hitting that F# like he's the fucking man (which he is).

  • This is the best F# he ever had. Better than on the original!

  • @norgesnus omg, so much better than the original.

  • @norgesnus the best F# ANYONE has ever had...

  • A great band in their early days! May we keep Dream Theater alive as long as they wish.

  • More like, may John Petrucci allow us mortals to stay alive as long as he wishes!

  • OH GOD is sucks that it skips right in the middle of that

  • well i managed to resync this video. go on videos and you'll find it really clear :). thought this had to be done justice. people need to hear it in all its glory :D

  • AMAZING!!!! it stinks that his vocal chords were ruptured.

  • o_O

  • Look at Petrucci's hair! <3<3

  • for me, the best Learning To Live F# ever!!!!!!!

    fuck yeaaahhhh!!!

  • wow

  • Every good band's getting older...

  • Back when this band was GREAT! Too bad Kevin Moore left.

  • It's not like Petucci or Portnoy left the band. He was the fuckin keybordist!!! Do you really think Kevin Moore was the deciding factor in the band? Portnoy and Petrucci always did the producing anyway.

  • Kevin Moore made this band musical. He wrote most of the lyrics. Since he left, welll... let's just say it hasn't been the same.

  • Moore wrote the more popular songs like Pull Me Under 6:00 Wait for Sleep and Lie. no doubt that he was important from 85 to 94. It has not been the same you're right there, but you are forgetting giant staples in Dream Theater's career such as Six Degrees, Octavarium, The Count of Tuscany, Stream of Consciousness, the main theme for Metropolis Pt 2 etc. which he all came up with musically. Rudess did not join to write lyrics but only to help the band musically which he certainly has.

  • How do lyrics make a band musical. Lyrics give a song content. And Moore didn't write most of the songs, Petrucci did. Through the first two albums Moore wrote 6 songs while petrucci wrote 8. They are a PROGRESSIVE band meaning that nothing will sound alike. Every album will sound independent. If they sounded like they did in the early 90's they would just be another boring prog rock band. Dream theater instead has become the mold that other prog metal bands have to fill.

  • If they were another boring prog rock band the wouldn't be gaining new fans all around the world. Dream Theater has never been more popular then they are right now. I'm not sayin I like every song from them but I respect everyone because of the instrumental greatness. And if you think the band writes boring 29 min. songs you're not listening hard enough. You kinda have to be a musician to really understand how unbelievably talented they still are. # 6 on the charts isn't boring, obviously.

  • I'm certainly not going to question anyone's musicianship. However, does it really take a musician to determine whether or not something sounds good or is enjoyable to listen to?

  • You don't have to be a musician but it does help because you are able to directly relate to what they're trying to accomplish. They will never be mainstream. They don't write five minute power chord songs just for popularity like Green Day. They write complicated songs because it constantly pushes them to be the best musicians they can possibly be. Every song tells a story. And I like the way they sound because as a musician you can understand why they do what they do.

  • And because they play their feelings. You can't really put out every feeling with just a power chord song :P

  • very well said. i hate it when people shit on their parade and say they arent as technically good as people think they are. well they are probably the most technically skilled musicians in one band.

  • This is true. I think they honestly do it for the music. James LaBrie was offered the chance to sing for Iron Maiden by Steve Harris and even though he is a maiden fan he turned down the offer as he (like the rest of the band) likes the direction and style of dream theater. If he just wanted money he would have gone to the higher paying Iron Maiden gig.

  • ooooooooo dont be hatin. Rudess is the greatest keyboardist who ever lived. The only BIG difference is that Dream Theater is more of a conceptual band and they have been ever since 99. look at the difference between Falling Into Infinity and Metropolis Pt 2. and you're saying they're not great? Black Clouds also is another fantastic album and it reached number 6 because people are beginning to appreciate them. their style in 94 compared to now is not that big of a difference.

  • i agree, metropolis pt 2 was an amazing album and is the first one i bought along with a change of seasons, but tbh apart from JR's debut album with DT which was already in the works when they were doing Falling Into Infinity, they haven't created any songs i would argue that come close to the epics of Images And Words and the song ACoS. Kevin Moore had soul. Technically, DT are better than ever but I'm never going to hear Wait For Sleep live ever, and that kills me a little inside.

  • dont deny that Rudess also has soul. obvious examples: Octavarium and The Count of Tuscany. there are several more from 99 to now, but those are perhaps the most epic, well also Six Degrees and The Spirit Carries On, all which he wrote, not lyrically, but musically which is all he's there to do, and after listening to those among many others that he wrote and his solo project which is mostly piano, he clearly puts his soul into Dream Theater as much, if not more, as Kevin Moore.

  • @frayedguitarist Or Space Dye West. :(

  • agreed, I ran out of space. I could rant for hours if youtube gave me enough characters

  • @frayedguitarist <3333333

  • holy shit!

  • I have yet to hear a better singer.

  • James Labrie is incredible

  • that was amazing!

  • OMG!!!! that was soo perfect in every single way!!!

  • That is just...perfect

  • i just hate it when people talk about other people than labrie hitting a magical note in a magical song here :P maybe it's not extremely high, but the point is how magical and epic it sounds...

  • yes, i know i spelled including wrong it was an accident.

  • OK... first of all, Bruces highest was not an E5- go listen to hallowed be thy name. Dios voice is immortal, Halfords faletto is amazing. I'm pretty sure i heard bruce blowing connected high cs at one time. As for Geoff Tate- Ive never heard him go higher than even Labrie.

In Run to The Hills bruce is blowing connected high notes at the end if im correct- incluiding high- c.

  • Hey what do you know. I'm hated again. You people are realgood haters!!! Metalis about hate!!! So why do so many people hate this singer? is it because he doesn't sound good? is it his shitty attitude? Is it because he has not an ounce of charisma?is it because he's homely?

  • Yhose are the words that come out of my mouth at aa meetings. That is not appropriate here however. And I f i could drum like Tony Williams you already said that would get boring.I can't of course and I certainly didn't sing like pavarotti and never claimed that i was a great singer!!!!

I am surprised to know that at least one metal dildo jnows who Tony Williams is.One out of a million?

  • unless the words"hi my name is jeff, and i am an alcohol/drug addict" come out your mouth, i aint gonna believe it, i don't care if you can drum like tony williams and sing like pavarotti, it all sounds a like a bunch of bullshit to me...

  • Sorry that the truth hurts your thin skin so much. beal w/it.

  • wow your even hated on this page rrdrums110. just fuck off you wanker. go and get a life outside of youtube- you are always on this. whenever im on youtube, i look at all the videos and your on it every like....10 hours. get over it, go get a life

  • rrdrums if u stop being a puto and stfu about DT and everyone u currently talk shit about i will listen to deep purple in rock. but thats wat it will have to take. and until then ur still a joto.

  • Bruce Dickinson owns James. So dies Dio, Halford, Freddie Mercury. But James is great though.

  • Bruce's highest was an E5, and he could never pull it off live. Dio's voice is immortal, and almost never appears to age, but his range isn't THAT special. Halford has a fantastic scream, but that's all it is, Falcetto scream. I ain't even gonna touch Freddie.

You want someone better. Try Geoff Tate

  • jeffy you must be a compulsive liar because nobody spits out more bullshit than you....

  • Also...what is it going to take for me to get you to back in time on deep purple before they became ultra commercial and famous/ i highly suggest you get and listen to Deep Purple in Rock. You will see what great musicians they were there. The singer is Ian Gillan and is so superior as to be embarrassing for poor thin tin vocal James labrie. I feel embarrassed right now for him!! Just thinking about how much better ian Gillan was. He was the originally the lead singer for Jesus Christ superstar

  • Yes as amatter of fact I used to sing often and quite well. I'm a tenor and I took lessons from italian opera star (retired for three years and used to sing lead(shared) and harmony for my classic rock cover band Shakey Ground in the 90's.I have also won karaoke contests and people thought I was very good. I like drumming better and am more talented at drums. But I used to sing songs all the time that led to and often higher notes than this F# here that you guys think is all that? It isn't.

  • RR, no offense buddy, but what are you a singer too? This singing is very difficult to nail i know pro- level- singers who say so! But still, James don't compare to Dickinson or Dio or Halford. Im sure that you know this to be true.

  • wtf rrdrums!!!!! stop trolling DT vids!!! its bad enough u go to portnoy or pettrucci vids but WTF do u know about singing???????? GET A LIFE!!!!!! and stop bashing my favorite bands

  • F# ain't that tough of a note for a pro tenor. let me knowing when he's blowing connected high c's .Unti then big fucking deal.

  • yeah but u can hear its still conencted to his chest, thats where he's drawing the power from. Either way the point is it aint in any way falsetto

  • hitting the note may not be especially hard, but I bet your using falsetto or a weak head voice, Labrie used to smash it out in full chest. Back before his first vocal rupture, he went much higher then this still connecting to chest, check out his performances of anither hand/ the killing hand in 93, he was incredible. 2 vocal ruptures later, and 15 or so years on, obviously he's not as strong as he was bak then, but I saw hima week ago, and he was amazing, def. getting bak to his former power

  • you're wrong.labrie use head voice to hit this note like every man on earth.......no chest voice

  • Kevin Labrie is awesome at singing!!!

  • Its James, and yeah he is
