Yes. You tend to fade away simply because you let your momentum (which goes behind) drive you. On a step back, yes you create space, but you do it for a jumper OR pump fake generally, so try locking down a confortable position on your step back by giving your legs a little angle to the outside (you back) when you land. This should help.
I have a similar problem with you. Basically the problem is when we do that move, our body doesn't become stable when we're in mid air doing the jumpshot. :)
But I solved the problem, just make sure your knees are always bend. And when you step back with your left leg, make sure it's BEND already when you bring in your right foot.

well when you step back go into the motion you go into to make the opponent think your about to shoot, they should jump and just crossover again
