  • Mind = Blown

  • Ummm, that's the current bass player from Metallica, is it not? Surprising to see him solo like that !

  • holdsworth is a E.T. disguised of human being cause nobody plays the guitar that way!!!!!!

  • notice how no one in the audience is jumping up and down, cheering, moshing, waving their hands, screaming, or rushing the stage neither sweaty nor hysterical?

    yeah.

  • @redneckblacklabel It's great. Obviously most adults would find that sort of behavior profoundly annoying when trying to absorb the details of complex improvisational performance. Would be like someone spitting in your wine. It's generally frowned upon.

  • @Kuzalias yeah. nice pseudo whatever answer. i know a few things about vino (and enough to know someone like you likely wouldn't discern spit in his sangiovese).

my comment meant that this was a passionless performance, worsened by inspiring less than zero passion in the spectator.

those of us that go 'bonkers' for our beloved 6 stringers can scream and yell and jump around without missing a single nuance of the performance. it's kind of like multitasking on adrenaline.

  • @redneckblacklabel You're right. I don't care for wine. But I'm not over at the Wine Spectator forums complaining about how it tastes like cough syrup and no one should drink it. Naturally, I go and drink what I enjoy. Similarly, if you don't find live improvisational fusion to be interesting and/or have nothing positive to contribute, then I suggest watching what you do like rather than making a fool of yourself in front of those who do find it interesting.

  • @redneckblacklabel lol u just failed at getting top comment and now u're mad.

  • @redneckblacklabel I don't even know what to say to this....so I'm just going to say your retarded

  • @redneckblacklabel I believe that you have, quite possibly, the worst opinion about this music and this performance that you could possibly have. To be blunt about it stop trying to act smart because you're making yourself look like like an idiot.

  • @redneckblacklabel Well, there are reasons as to why different people listen to different things. Its because they like diiferent things. And If you where to attend a piano concert you would not see any of those things either, because some kinds of music are best enjoyed in a really chill setting while other kinds of music are best when you run around getting punched in the face. If you prefer one over the other, then dont attend the other.

  • Is that guitar a saxophone?

  • @steveHoweisno1 it's actually a toaster.

  • It's Jimmy Haslip on Bass, He is a great player and real good guy as well. If one listens to Jimmy Johnson on the studio version of this track he digs abit too on an Alembic.

And that's the definitive Alan Pasqua on keys from the old Tony Williams second Lifetime, Believe It days.

Was stage left for one of these shows and they had not played together for a bout 3-4 months and Boom ! they started like they never had stopped playing !

  • Is that guitar a Stradberg like what Tosin Abasi uses?

  • @atari3200t Nope, it's custom made but I don't remember who it's by. I know it wasn't Strandberg though.

  • @atari3200t It's a Bill DeLap custom build

  • Bass = flicka da flicka da flicka da

  • Bassist's solo technique is horrible. Holdsworth's tone is sumptuous.

  • that bass sounds like a damn downtuned sitar or something, way too much fretbuzz.

  • 0:12 the lick

  • I'm a Frank Zappa fan. I was watching an interview with Frank and he said somthing about liking Allan Holdsworth so i decided to check him out. I think I understand why Frank liked him. He's a bit abstract isn't he? And thats Chad Wackerman too! Thanks for uploading! :)

  • @kidotheshoe Glad you found it interesting =)

  • @kidotheshoe i think he said that holdsworth was the most interesting guitarist on this planet...

  • @kidotheshoe What do you mean by abstract ?

  • @kidotheshoe Allan is like God to alot of fusion guitarists.

  • that guitar sounds comfy as fuck

  • it's so cool you get that deep :)

  • bel suono di merda Haslip!

  • Alien fingers !

  • jazz wankers commenting on shit, you go and play as good as this and we will come and watch you ,smothering tones, bet you cant even play 3 blind mice on the recorder

  • esto no es humano

  • his solos have no melodic line, no feeling and very untheist scales....although..RESPECT.

  • @DimK46 you realize that strictly from an objective pov on my part, everyone and anyone who knows and understands this type of music (operating word here being understands) would veraciously and rite fully disagree with you. from a point of observation, pretty much all jazz fusion of this sort is similar in "melody" and using your logic, all jazz fusion has no feeling, and yes the scales are not your typical gmaj pentatonic scales that you are accustomed, the t/s is the melodic pattern.get it?

  • @scottfree6 ......ok.....

  • @DimK46 No feeling? WTF?

  • @GagaMan214 emotion u r correct!

  • @AnonymousCowardX Different players have different styles. U dont need to bash people because of how they sound. I enjoyed the bassists solo, and I bet others enjoyed it as well. it provided an excellent contrast to Holdsworths incredibly smooth playing

  • Je veux le même phrasé

  • Awsome playing, UGLY Guitar..

  • When you play with Holdsworth, time stands still. That's why Wackerman still looks like he's 15.

  • What kind of music is this...?

  • @fvgotch its generally put in the jazz-fusion category.

  • Does anyone know the best amp and pedals to use to get a tone like Holdsworth's?

  • @guitarmasterfinn

Delay and Tube Amp. Allan uses amps and effects that are discontinued.

  • @shadowknight132 He's like a good hipster. But he's not a hipster. I'm sorry. Allan is far too cool to be a hipster.

  • Is that the bass player from the Yellow Jackets? I can't remember his name.

  • theres no head on that guitar .... KILL IT

  • AAAAAGH he's so smooth! ldfhkgsdhfkgskdjlfhalkdgjdf

  • so how does he tune his guitar with no headstock

  • fantastic sound

  • the guitar prhasing is like a alien speaking,

  • Not feeling Wackerman. This would be so much better with Vinnie.

  • @ScumOfCaligula even better with gary novak...check out the trip he had w carpenter on bass and novak, sooo killin

  • Too bad that bass player digs in too much like a brute while soloing and smothers his tone - I can't stand this

  • @AnonymousCowardX \

    Thinking the same thing.

  • @AnonymousCowardX I agree. Jimmy Haslip is one of my favorite bass players but his tone and approach to these live solos does not do him justice. Better to check out his work with the Jackets.

  • @AnonymousCowardX He is trying to go for Jaco Pastorius feel, but..., well, Jaco is gone and now we're stuck with his "clones" Some are better than others. This guy is very good, but there is no depth in what he plays. He's kinda like bass shredder, sorta like, ma, look how fast I can play! Jimi Hendrix is god of the electric guitar, and Jaco Pastorius is god of the electric bass Amen!

  • @AnonymousCowardX He just needs to either play soft or jack his action a bit...maybe he needs fretwork...a lot things to consider

  • @Chromatype Yep, you are right. I was really disappointed by it... guess he was nervous, and dug in too much, but he's got a name... quite a shame. I'm not a professional, but I wouldn't do that. You play bass? I try to.

  • @AnonymousCowardX Yeah my thoughts exactly. Pretty vulgar technique.

  • @AnonymousCowardX Well...that is Jimmy Haslip :)

  • 1:21

  • I know I'm gonna get smashed for this...but I can't work out whether i like it or not...I appreciate it but I certainly don't find it easy listening...maybe it'll grow on me; I'll report back and let u know

  • thanks for posting this .. :)

  • Does this guy's guitar have a shorter scale length than normal? Or is it just the fact his guitar has no headstock, and it looks shorter?

  • @ELEPHIN0 Yes, a little- fairly sure that it's a 25". Although he did have some crazy baritone DeLaps which were between 34" and 38 inches. I believe he plays the 38" scale baritone on the track "Zarabeth" off of the "Wardenclyffe Tower" album. It sounds amazing.

  • @Kuzalias His solo on "Zarabeth" is really really amazing!!! and his tone too!!!!

  • @ELEPHIN0 / It's strictly his reach and that he plays a lot of 4 note per string licks. Not that Holdsworth plays licks at all!

  • @ELEPHIN0 And in fact his hands are big.

  • @ELEPHIN0 his hand sare also HUGE

  • @ELEPHIN0 He also has GIANT hands...

  • @ELEPHIN0

One thing that makes the guitar look smaller is that Allan Holdsworth has MASSIVE hands, like silly massive hands and he freguently does 4-notes/string huge stretch legato runs that show off how big his hands are.

  • The Bass player is Jimmy Haslip from the band The Yellowjackets, no slouch on the low end dept.

  • gotta love the signature "crying" wang bar, NOBODY ELSE sounds like that, NOBODY!

  • Sick legato. Great guitarist. More people should listen to this guy.

  • 3 RETARDS ARE DEAF AND BLIND! SOOO SMOOOTH....THIS GUY IS A MASTER! CAN'T BE JAZZ CAUSE IT'S PERFECT!!!!! SO MUCH EXPRESSION ! THE BASS GUY SHOWED SOME EFFORT BUT....HE COULDN'T DO MUCH MORE TO SET US UP FOR ALAN'S MASTERPIECE!!!!

  • ROB TRUJILLO ON BASS!!!

  • @NikDanger98 lmao, is that really him??

  • NOTICE YNGWIE LEADS WITH RING AND COMPLIMENTS WITH PINKY!THIS GUY HAS A LOT OF PINKY! NICE WORK

  • Here because of @periphery

  • What is your favorite AH albums? mine are:

    1. Atavachron

    2. Sixteen Men of Tain

    3. Metal Fatigue or Sand (a tie)

I think his worst is Secrets imho.

  • @dwilmer7

Sixteen. I like IOU but the production is quite mediocre.

As far as I'm concerned, Novak and Carpenter was his best band-fantastic.

This video is somewhat clinical, I think it has something to do with Wackerman's style.

  • This dude must practice while he's pooping to be this good

  • woa is that rob trujillo? I never knew he was THAT good.

  • @EpictheEpicest lol no thats jimmy haslip from the yellowjackets

  • This guy is pretty good. He has some serious potential, with practice he could be awesome.

  • @dwilmer7 are u being facetious?

  • Im sorry, but I really can't stand the bass tone in the intro.Very talented musician, but the tone is just really "eh" to me.

    As for Holdsworth,jeebus christ!

  • Oh man I love his tone!

  • good solo ^.^

  • @CptChaos88 youre right he uses the left handed position but with the strings upside down, as a right handed bass, atheist´s guitarist also uses his guitar like that, that happens when you are left handed and dont own your instrument when you start to practice

  • Man can Chad have any more Chinas?

  • @drummakid101 i wish

  • any one else noticed, that the bassist hast set his strings the "wrong way round"??

  • @CptChaos88 that's because he's left handed

  • so what IS that axe? a Steinberger?

  • @songbirdwhosings It's a custom guitar made by Bill Delap.

  • @songbirdwhosings It's a DeLap headless guitar. It's a custom made guitar with a Steinberger neck and Trans Trem bridge.

  • His legato technique is so ridiculous!!! I envy his left hand.

  • Robert Trujillo 's hidden secret : he plays incognito with Allan and a lefty bass to compensate the crap metallica does !! ahahaha just learnt somethin !

  • dose any know who the organ or keyboard player is in the clip

  • @amtrc

    Alan pasqua

  • @amtrc allen pasqua

  • That bass sounds terrible.

  • that tone!!!

  • I've played Sax and Guitar for 30 years and from 2.00 onwards it is just beyond anything anyone has ever played ever. Regardless of instrument. Truely astonishing!!! To be able to shred like that and still give it soul and beauty is heart breaking.

  • Absolutely awesome but who ever edited the video needs a size 10 up his arse to the last lace hole........... Damned annoying.

  • @gb5uq Whats damned annoying is someone who passes judgment on anothers contribution with no knowledge of the related circumstances. Actually scratch that- I prefer it edited this way; it is my video after all. Take a hike.

  • Epic and awesome...this one is too awesome for me to try and explain in words. Gonna have to plead the fifth on this one.

  • this guy taught guthrie govan, if you get what i mean...

  • Does anyone know what kind of guitar Allan is using?

  • @WoWintosh

It's a custom headless guitar built by Bill DeLap.

  • Slash would be taken more seriously if we could hear him play somethin new.

  • @MNorthernLights Slash wouldn't even be able to conceive what this music is even doing. I mean has he ever even tried to play over a chord progression like this? It ain't easy

  • @skinkusmetalicus Oh I'm sure he's tried it. But about halfway through he just turned it into "Sweet Child O' Mine"

  • that bassist is fucking demented!

  • I had become a bit jaded with all the samey sounding guitarists, mainly recycling the same old blues licks, but you have totally refreshed my musical sensibilities (gulp!) by showing this man Allan Holdsworth's incredible techinical skill coupled with true and original musicality. Thanks very much for posting this. (p.s. guitar for sale, anyone interested just message me!)

  • That bass player looks goofy rocking out like that.

  • Hate that bass tone

  • maniacccccccc

  • 2:43... his phrasing is BREATHTAKING.

  • Why would you even mention Slash???Its like mentioning Mr T as an actor!

  • A rare unique talent. Comparing musicians is a bit pointless but who would you rather to listen to? I mean I love all the best guys, Clapton, Schofield, but for sheer enjoyment and listeing pleasure Allan is my favourite. And he is from my home city fo Bradford. I lived in the same flat as him in Thorpe Edge - amazing what you can do if you do your own thing and dont follow everyone else.

  • show the bass palyer sum luv!

  • it's quite funny to me that anybody at all can say that anyone is better than holdsworth, he to me is at the level where no one person is best, its just style or who came first or even just preference as a person but technique wise nobody can realy top him

  • The bassist ruins it.

  • @t3hgir Yes he does ruin it!!!

  • @t3hgir why does he ruin it? he's really good. and it fits oddly but perfectly. idk who cares anyways. they're just jammin

  • cheesy organ

  • @JSKTS i'd see a doctor about that if i were you :)

  • @TheYoungDieGood if ur musician, I have to inform you:

you said it because u dont know how many possibilities you have in a rich chord like these in this intrincate harmony. just like most of rock stars on pop music.

and to know it, you have to STUDY HARD.

To know it and play freely and creatively like holdsworth, you have to SWEAT YOU ASS OFF during SEVERAL YEARS of your life.

  • JIMMY'S SOLO IS INCREDIBLE!!!!!

  • JIMMY'S SOLO IS INCREDIBLE!!!!!

  • Is this jazz-fusion? Any sarcastic answers and you are a dick in advance.Thanks.

  • @bignaughtydog Yeah man

  • @bignaughtydog - yes it's fusion, but even within fusion he's pretty unique. I heard him say he sees entire scales passing by for each chord change. He also said he really does not like guitar and always wished he was a sax player! If you note in quiet passages you will see him constructing brilliant chord inversions, uses a lot of 4ths stacked up and other complex ideas. That's what gives his music cohesion- like an alternate set if rules. He used to be a side man but disliked the limits.

  • @nelsonfrazier jajaj cachaste altiro que era chileno xD la papa es replicarles en español ¡ asi no cachan ! XD

  • holdsworth is up there with brad meldhau, chris potter, pat metheny, and all those guys if you ask me... one of those absolute geniuses where you just wonder what could possibly go on in their head to let them do what they do.

  • I love Jimmy's playing

  • I think the bass solo is pointless, no feeling and order...

  • @topheytophezz Wow, what a middle finger to the bassist. Like, hey, your solo is pointless.

    :/

  • @topheytophezz yeah, i agree. and I think it is what it is cause hes not succeeding on the thinking thing, ya know... hes trying to throw some pentatonic licks, and that bullshit patterns up and down... but finalized very well! hahaha smells like a cheater! :^D

  • appreciating this takes involved listening.

  • @TheYoungDieGood I think it is a little more involved than that. Allan is not playing a bunch of random notes

  • I've been listening Clapton, Beck, Vai, Malmsteen.

I've never listened to Holdsworth. Enormous regret of my life...

  • @keiichi33 bit handy is'nt he..?? i've been into holdsworth for years and he amazes me all the time.. his style is so effortless.. Perhaps the best player on the planet... Have you checked out shawn lane.... Alex hutchings and Guthrie govan..

  • @keiichi33 You might like Fred Frith, Frank Zappa, Robert Fripp, Steve Hackett, Gábor Szabó.

  • @GentleGinjeet Fripp is pretty much God.

  • @TheYoungDieGood Not really, it takes more practice than you could imagine to be able to communicate through improvisation and be able to be completely in the moment. Conventional music is okay, but it's like they had something to say and now let's just move on. Improv is where it's at.

  • I dont care who u are this is a tuff style to play.Mike u better not start playing this u will just piss me off lol.

  • these guys know there stuff i dont care who u are this is a tuff style to play.MIKE dont star playing this stuff you will just piss me off lol

  • Well... I don't really know what to make of this.

It all just seems a bit too random for me... but I guess that's Jazz?

Some may like it, but it doesn't rock my boat.

I listened to it again and it still didn't hit the mark.sorry !!

  • @SONGSTICKS Well its pretty much solos supported by melodies, which is supported by the rhythm section lol. Like you said, its whatever floats your boat. This is just my favoured music.

  • @ParallaxDrums

There is one Jazz guitarist that really does impress me and he comes across as such a lovely guy and thats Jody Fisher.. have a look on youtube at his interview and solo stuff.. now his stuff I like !!

  • @SONGSTICKS - a lot of people have this reaction. perhaps for some Holdsworth is an acquired taste. Try listening to him on Jean-Luc Ponty's Enigmatic Ocean or on UK's first album. Those performances made his reputation, but they are not so abstract. He is truly a genius and is worth getting to understand his music, especially if you like electric guitar. One line by Holdsworth contains more guitar solo than an entire Van Halen album. I don't mean that as a put down on pop.
