@redneckblacklabel It's great. Obviously most adults would find that sort of behavior profoundly annoying when trying to absorb the details of complex improvisational performance. Would be like someone spitting in your wine. It's generally frowned upon.
@Kuzalias yeah. nice pseudo whatever answer. i know a few things about vino (and enough to know someone like you likely wouldn't discern spit in his sangiovese).

I had become a bit jaded with all the samey sounding guitarists, mainly recycling the same old blues licks, but you have totally refreshed my musical sensibilities (gulp!) by showing this man Allan Holdsworth's incredible techinical skill coupled with true and original musicality. Thanks very much for posting this. (p.s. guitar for sale, anyone interested just message me!)
A rare unique talent. Comparing musicians is a bit pointless but who would you rather to listen to? I mean I love all the best guys, Clapton, Schofield, but for sheer enjoyment and listeing pleasure Allan is my favourite. And he is from my home city fo Bradford. I lived in the same flat as him in Thorpe Edge - amazing what you can do if you do your own thing and dont follow everyone else.
it's quite funny to me that anybody at all can say that anyone is better than holdsworth, he to me is at the level where no one person is best, its just style or who came first or even just preference as a person but technique wise nobody can realy top him
you said it because u dont know how many possibilities you have in a rich chord like these in this intrincate harmony. just like most of rock stars on pop music.
and to know it, you have to STUDY HARD.
To know it and play freely and creatively like holdsworth, you have to SWEAT YOU ASS OFF during SEVERAL YEARS of your life.
@bignaughtydog - yes it's fusion, but even within fusion he's pretty unique. I heard him say he sees entire scales passing by for each chord change. He also said he really does not like guitar and always wished he was a sax player! If you note in quiet passages you will see him constructing brilliant chord inversions, uses a lot of 4ths stacked up and other complex ideas. That's what gives his music cohesion- like an alternate set if rules. He used to be a side man but disliked the limits.
holdsworth is up there with brad meldhau, chris potter, pat metheny, and all those guys if you ask me... one of those absolute geniuses where you just wonder what could possibly go on in their head to let them do what they do.
@topheytophezz yeah, i agree. and I think it is what it is cause hes not succeeding on the thinking thing, ya know... hes trying to throw some pentatonic licks, and that bullshit patterns up and down... but finalized very well! hahaha smells like a cheater! :^D
@keiichi33 bit handy is'nt he..?? i've been into holdsworth for years and he amazes me all the time.. his style is so effortless.. Perhaps the best player on the planet... Have you checked out shawn lane.... Alex hutchings and Guthrie govan..
@TheYoungDieGood Not really, it takes more practice than you could imagine to be able to communicate through improvisation and be able to be completely in the moment. Conventional music is okay, but it's like they had something to say and now let's just move on. Improv is where it's at.
@SONGSTICKS Well its pretty much solos supported by melodies, which is supported by the rhythm section lol. Like you said, its whatever floats your boat. This is just my favoured music.
There is one Jazz guitarist that really does impress me and he comes across as such a lovely guy and thats Jody Fisher.. have a look on youtube at his interview and solo stuff.. now his stuff I like !!
@SONGSTICKS - a lot of people have this reaction. perhaps for some Holdsworth is an acquired taste. Try listening to him on Jean-Luc Ponty's Enigmatic Ocean or on UK's first album. Those performances made his reputation, but they are not so abstract. He is truly a genius and is worth getting to understand his music, especially if you like electric guitar. One line by Holdsworth contains more guitar solo than an entire Van Halen album. I don't mean that as a put down on pop.
Mind = Blown

@TheYoungDieGood if ur musician, I have to inform you:
you said it because u dont know how many possibilities you have in a rich chord like these in this intrincate harmony. just like most of rock stars on pop music.
and to know it, you have to STUDY HARD.
To know it and play freely and creatively like holdsworth, you have to SWEAT YOU ASS OFF during SEVERAL YEARS of your life.

JIMMY'S SOLO IS INCREDIBLE!!!!!

Is this jazz-fusion? Any sarcastic answers and you are a dick in advance.Thanks.

@bignaughtydog Yeah man
DrIgnatius 1 year ago

I think the bass solo is pointless, no feeling and order...
topheytophezz 1 year ago
@topheytophezz Wow, what a middle finger to the bassist. Like, hey, your solo is pointless.
:/
Luckyhat66 1 year ago
@topheytophezz yeah, i agree. and I think it is what it is cause hes not succeeding on the thinking thing, ya know... hes trying to throw some pentatonic licks, and that bullshit patterns up and down... but finalized very well! hahaha smells like a cheater! :^D

appreciating this takes involved listening.
P3313 1 year ago
@TheYoungDieGood I think it is a little more involved than that. Allan is not playing a bunch of random notes
PhuckHue2 1 year ago 2
I've been listening Clapton, Beck, Vai, Malmsteen.
I've never listened to Holdsworth. Enormous regret of my life...
keiichi33 1 year ago 23
@keiichi33 bit handy is'nt he..?? i've been into holdsworth for years and he amazes me all the time.. his style is so effortless.. Perhaps the best player on the planet... Have you checked out shawn lane.... Alex hutchings and Guthrie govan..
bensooty1 8 months ago
@keiichi33 You might like Fred Frith, Frank Zappa, Robert Fripp, Steve Hackett, Gábor Szabó.

@GentleGinjeet Fripp is pretty much God.

@TheYoungDieGood Not really, it takes more practice than you could imagine to be able to communicate through improvisation and be able to be completely in the moment. Conventional music is okay, but it's like they had something to say and now let's just move on. Improv is where it's at.

Well... I don't really know what to make of this.
It all just seems a bit too random for me... but I guess that's Jazz?
Some may like it, but it doesn't rock my boat.
I listened to it again and it still didn't hit the mark.sorry !!
SONGSTICKS 1 year ago
@SONGSTICKS Well its pretty much solos supported by melodies, which is supported by the rhythm section lol. Like you said, its whatever floats your boat. This is just my favoured music.

@ParallaxDrums
There is one Jazz guitarist that really does impress me and he comes across as such a lovely guy and thats Jody Fisher.. have a look on youtube at his interview and solo stuff.. now his stuff I like !!
SONGSTICKS 1 year ago
@SONGSTICKS - a lot of people have this reaction. perhaps for some Holdsworth is an acquired taste. Try listening to him on Jean-Luc Ponty's Enigmatic Ocean or on UK's first album. Those performances made his reputation, but they are not so abstract. He is truly a genius and is worth getting to understand his music, especially if you like electric guitar. One line by Holdsworth contains more guitar solo than an entire Van Halen album. I don't mean that as a put down on pop.
