Im in a similar situation as you were. I dont play dnd cuz im from a small school and... there's no 1 who would so thats that... But i do play Neverwinter nights and they same way you do i can have so much fun just making the characters though i never seem to stick to one. Ive always thought of learning to play but never got around to it... so as a NWNs fan RIP creator of the game that inspired the game i play, and to all who were more connected to him then me im sorry for what happened.

While I'm here...nice vid. I didn't get into D&D until 2000 (though I did V:TM in early 99, and read the Dragonlance saga from the library in 97 or 98 and loved it), so Gygax is more a distant figure for me, but I realize that few people will ever even have the hope of leaving his or her mark as much as he did. Countless games (including video), shows, books, movies, owe their existence to his creativity. Our culture would be noticeably different had there been no Gygax. RIP.

Better to exercise one's mind & creativity while interacting with others socially than it is to passively sit in front of a TV (even the Superbowl) tuning everyone else out. Plus, playing D&D improves everything from math to vocabulary. And Planescape got me interested in studying philosophy, Zakhara got me interested in Middle Eastern history.

No it isn't. That's not even logical. God loves all of his creation, and that's why he gives us all rain, and all the light of the sun. That's why he offers forgiveness to everyone. In fact, the idea of hell is likely impart a fabrication. What would be the point of torturing a soul for eternity? Punishment is around to correct a behavior problem. Thus, hell would be around to teach those who are corrupt a valuable lesson. If not, God would have to be vindictive asshole...or a god of vengence.

While I'm here...nice vid. I didn't get into D&D until 2000 (though I did V:TM in early 99, and read the Dragonlance saga from the library in 97 or 98 and loved it), so Gygax is more a distant figure for me, but I realize that few people will ever even have the hope of leaving his or her mark as much as he did. Countless games (including video), shows, books, movies, owe their existence to his creativity. Our culture would be noticeably different had there been no Gygax. RIP.

Regarding, Gary: I'm now inspired to get a copy of "Saga of Old City", to read in his honor. I can't imagine what my teens years woulda been like without my D&D friendships... or how my writing would have otherwise evolved. Thank you for your tribute.

Better to exercise one's mind & creativity while interacting with others socially than it is to passively sit in front of a TV (even the Superbowl) tuning everyone else out. Plus, playing D&D improves everything from math to vocabulary. And Planescape got me interested in studying philosophy, Zakhara got me interested in Middle Eastern history.
I'm athletic myself, but D&D gave me more of a life than sports.

Getting out and socialize with people is better than staying inside and getting fat and ugly all alone with no contact to anybody.
And regarding "exercising mind & creativity"
one would be better off reading a real history/maths/generic culture book than taking seripusly a book about "fairytales".
