I just compared it with a video of mine(not on youtube), same RPM's and same sound. It's a Tecumseh 4HP from '77, and it runs great. I did the same, Spark plug and carb clean/rebuild.
Chit I was putting mine back together today and found a crack in the wall where the starter sits. 10hp used on my carter go cart. This bums me out. Before I go ahead and take apart the lower end anyone have a clue why this happened. Oil level is good and always used fresh oil on a regular basis. It still runs and makes no noise other then what it should. Its just the crack that leaks oil... What would you do before deciding to use it as target practice...?
@sum1uallno What often happens on these motors is that the connecting rod breaks and makes a hole or a crack in the block where the starter motor attaches, maybe this one had a broken rod and somebody fixed it. If it runs without any noises, I would just seal the crack with some silicone and use the engine as long as it lasts.
@kiarra00 The trick is to always have a can of starting fluid on hand as long as you have this motor.1 pull everytime without it I would have taken a sledge hammer to it.
My 10hp tecumseh on my generator wont run and I have had the carb apart 847563 times damn engines Im so glad I have a 5,500 watt generator that wont run also what was the name of that song in the beginning of the vid?
i have a 23 year old bolens snowblower with a 8hp tecumseh and it runs just as good cleaned out the carb adjusted it.. im very supurised how good mine ran... these engines last for ever if you know how take care of them
Thanks, I looked at the two carbs side by side and they look the same but the numbers were totally different. Thanks for the info, Ill give it a shot later today.,. I guess i Should do a vid of it for others.. Cheers
Do you know if these carb will work on the 10hp model. I have a 10hp techumsie and no carp for it. my 8hp has a few broken head bolts. soi figure id just swap that carb off and place it on the 10hp.
I think I have this same Bolens. Mines a1985 model 824 8HP. It runs great, but it idles weird.... it reves up and down constantly when there's no load. Put it in gear and she runs fine.
how exactly do you fix this leaky throttle shaft problem? Im having an idle issue aswell with my tecumseh. Also on the bottom of the fuel bowl on teh carb there is a screw with a spring on it. what exactly does this screw do? adjust fuel mixture?
If any of you Tec owners want to dump you not so perfect engine's 8hp and above i'll take em. I put my 8 through hell and back last year and it's never run better. People believe that servicing a small engine is adding gas and looking at the oil. If you don't want em , unbolt em , box em and I will pay you to ship them to me. Canada only please
I have a Bolens 824 snow blower with a 8hp tecumseh. It was built in 1985, but looks new. The engine idle is the only problem. It runs up and down all by itself, but only when there's no load on the engine. When in gear, it idles a lot better, but not perfect.
The most likely reason a Tecumseh Engine won't idle, is due to a worn or leaky throttle shaft. Happens to all of them over time. I like to replace them with Tillotsons because they bolt right up most of the time.

Well, You need to measure the bolt spacing on the intake where the carb mounts. I have some Rebuilt Tillotson Carbs, but I think they will fit 3.5-7hp Tecumsehs. They look just like that Diaphragm Carb you had.
Tecumseh, eh? You've got to be one of the world's best mechanics to even keep it RUNNING! Great, GREAT work, man! And to get it running THAT smooth? Damn, man. Damn...
Yeah you are right! I tried to start it today, after sitting since i made this video, and the POS teCRAPseh wouldnt start, and when it finaly started after 500 pulls and 1000 primes, it ran like crap and died when i tried to give more throttle!, its a junk engine!, im gonna make it run so its nice and warm when i sell it, because i dont want it!!
Gasoline eventually "goes stale" after a few weeks. I have a Toro mower with a Tecumseh TVS-100 engine that had old gas in it and would not start. After I cleaned the old gas out of the carburetor bowl and jets, it started on the first pull with fresh fuel in the tank.
There is an additive you can get called "fresh start" by Briggs and Stratton that you can mix with your gasoline/petrol to keep it from going stale and gumming up.
I figured how to start these, helps if it's running a bit rich: Full choke, max throttle. Prime until gas pisses out. Crank slowly until compression stroke, coil it back in and give a good pull with open fingers in case it backfires. Usually starts 1st shot.
But seeing how smoothly you got yours running, I'm probably not teaching you anything here... I never knew it was possible for these to run that well, very impressed.
clean out the carb real good with a peice of wire and air blower and a can of wd 40 , then run fresh gas thru it, run it dry, and drain the tank. next time u use it put fresh gas in it, prime it about ten times and it will start guaranteed...at least if its a tec.
@TehErrorOfDoom if you don't drain all the gas out of the tank, and carb, or at least stabilize it, then guaranteed it wont start when you need it. tec's have a bad reputaton, but its he people that do not know how to maintain them that say they suck.
You have that tecumseh running quite nicely! glad to see that you're fixing engines and not just destroying them all the time lol ;) I got a 5 horse on a snowblower that runs great too!
I just don't like to see good engines being destroyed. once i heard that it had a bad rod i didn't feel so bad, even though if i had it i woulda replaced the rod probably.
I bought an 8hp Tecumseh engine, 2 weeks ago, with a thrown rod. I had plans to replace it, and fix the hole, but a new rod coasted 80 dollars or something, and i paid 20 for the engine and snow blower it was on, so it was way to expensive, do you know were i can get one cheap, eBay?
ebay prolly works but i don't think you should bother if it broke the block. i have a source of used engine parts locally which is where i get most of my stuff.

Sears wanted Tecumseh to outsource their parts to China, and Tecumshe refused because they cared about the quality of their products more than Sears..
Since Sears buys 80% of Tecumseh engines, Sears stopped buying and went for a Chinese engine that is CRAP (no-name garbage)

my bad, didnt catch that this was a 10hp.. so would the 8hp carb work on it?
TimSDobson 2 years ago
this one has a carb from an 8hp. so it should bolt right on, as long as the choke setup is the same.

Yeah tecumseh engines are usaly a bit loud, even with a new muffler (or used, but no rust), this one is loud.
Finnaly runs great now, after a day of adjusting and fixing stuff on it.
