hey lately theres news spread about virus Leptospirosis that may come from rodents such as mice and hamster. i have pet hamsters and i love all of them, the thing is due to this rumors people start to take distance with rodents nevertheless my housemates. can u give me any opinion about this disease? is this virus has to come from all kind of rodents? or just from the wild critter only?
@kazoo61 I do not know a whole lot about zoonotic diseases of domesticated rodents, especially in tropical countries. Here in North America it is very, very rare for a pet hamster or mouse to carry a disease that affects humans. And then the human usually has to have a compromised (very weak) immune system to get it. In North America you really do not have to worry about getting sick from a pet mouse, as long as you take the usual precautions: keeping the cage clean/hand washing after handling.
@kazoo61 Wild mice are much more likely to carry diseases that affect humans than pet store mice. Domesticated mice are so removed from the wild ones that they rarely get the same diseases. Domesticated mice and hamsters, especially if they are kept away from wild rodents, are usually very safe pets to have. Dogs and cats that roam more freely are more likely to pass on a disease to humans, but even that is very rare......
@DaeyangSi I hand raised Stuart and Matilda from when they were only three days old. They grew up thinking I was their mom and that they were either human or I was an extra large mouse. So they completely trust and love me. This is why a human raised mouse is a completely different animal from a mouse raised mouse........
As always with Matilda and Stuart, sweet and adorable! Wondering, have you ever had a mouse that you didn't hand-raise that would let you pet them much?
I notice that in the first 15 to 20 seconds of the video clipping, both mice have their ears pointed straight backwards. I know that they're both relaxed and content; I thought that a mouse has his/her ears pointed straight backwards when he/she is in intense pain or discomfort.
@mickeydii In my experience mice have their ears forward when they are curious, excited and/or angry. They put their ears back when they are relaxed, expecting to be petted but also when they are not feeling well. A cat purring can mean several things: the cat is feeling loved and happy, the cat is feeling needy, the cat is scared and/or in pain. As with most animal body language you have to look at several different things including context to really know what the animal is feeling.....
@tiffanykerley Stuart met Mattie when she was less than week old. He saw me take care of her, he thought she was my baby and since he is very bonded to me, he accepted her as his family too. You should look at my video 'Stuart gets a little Sister', it shows how good he was to her when she was just a baby.
@tiffanykerley you should go back and watch the old videos. she's got ones from when she first got stu. and when she first got mattie. that'll answer your question i think.
I love when you pet mice and their little hand moves up their face. My mouse dies it all the time when I pet her face. She purrs a lot, too. Sometimes She won't move until I pet her.
I have seen all of your videos of Stu and Mattie. I feel almost as attached to them as I do my own mice. Thanks for sharing them with us.
