Never have I seen a painter get this results from mostly alla prima painting. While Scott is really talented (to perfectly place the hues and shades) his paints must also play a role. Naples yellow, titanium white and some sort of blue-ish gray is my guess.
@DevilGirl212 it is either turpentine or mineral spirits most likely. Water won't work for thinning oil paint unless you're using water-soluble oil paint
