Thing isn't really a pet, but more of an assistant. I am really straining my memory, but they had a Lion, A man-eating plant (think little house of horrors), and an Octopus in the series. In the musical, they had a pet Squid. I vaguely remember a Dragon in the series, but it is unknown if that was a pet. Nice to relive the old SNES days again.

As for why those guys are walking like egyptians, I'd wager it's due to being sick of their books. Possibly on account of their also liking their punk and metal bands. There may be a ringing buzzer involved in this equation but I'm not sure.
