This was a great show, but made no sense as a spin-off. Besides none of the original actors, Pernell's "take" on Trapper wasn't even remotely like the one we knew and loved on MASH.
I don't remember us watching it growing up, so I always just assumed Wayne Rogers was in it since it was supposed to be a mash spin off, guess I was wrong lol
I use to be an EMT and worked on an ambulance. I started when I was 16. So I loved any kind of medical show. Trapper John however was my favorite. I remember I wrote to the show to express how much I loved it and how I could relate to it. Appearently, my letter really impressed Gregory Harrison, as he personally wrote me a letter in response to mine, He was very impressed with as young as I was to be working on an ambulance helping to save lives. It was a very nice letter he sent.
The show mostly attracted the female audience...mostly because they were in love with Gregory Harrison. But other than that...most people thought it would be a basic continuation of M*A*S*H*.
This used to come on Sunday nights. I loved the show, but it was also a reminder that I had to go to bed then because I had to get up for school the next day.

I was a kid at the time when I first came across this show, but I still liked it. Came to love it when they placed the show into syndication, I was older, and had a better grasp of the show. But, the theme song will always be a favorite of mine
Brings back a lot of memories... when I was small I always looked forward to see Trapper John MD (and I always looked forward to 0:30 - but didn't know at that time, that I will become completely gay... ^^)
@bjroberts65 I wonder whatever happened to her. I'll Google and/or wiki her and see what I come up w/ ... Im back. Per wiki toward the end of her info: In the 1990s, Norris took a break from acting and got a degree in psychology from Antioch University. She is also an antique collector.
This show definitely needs to be on DVD. I remember back in the mid90s, FX, which was then a fairly new network, played these and I watched them all the time. I haven't seen this show since. It was such a great show.
I get all goofy when I hear this song. LOL This was one of my favorite all time songs I loved as a child. Brings back so many good memories. Bring back the 1980s please! LOL :)
I remember watching this every week -- and also remember watching it when I was in the hospital! Made my hospital stay much nicer -- cause I just kind of imagined that I was part of the TV show!

As a kid,I never made the connection that Trapper John M.D. was a character in MASH!It was only logical that his character would have been set in what was then the modern day.
Haha...I used to watch CBS' entire Sunday night comedy lineup with my dad (I wanted to live with the Jeffersons soooo badly) and the 'Trapper John MD' credits always meant one thing: time to go to bed!
@ncfonseca LOL! Exactly the same for me--except it was my mom, and 9 times out of 10, I could convince her to let me stay up "just a little bit longer...", especially if I had my blanket and was already sacking out on the floor.
Oh how I loved me some Gregory Harrison. If my memory is right this show came on Sunday night at 10. If I was good my mom would let me get up after my dad went to bed and we would watch it! I loved this show.
Pernell Roberts-a wonderful talent-now in his 80's and still going strong--i tell you; this is great; when he picked up on the Wayne Rogers' Trapper John character--from the MASH series--or movie--and --made him a great civilian doctor--i have been a fan of Pernell Roberts since his days as "Adam Cartwight" on "Bonanza"
And anfter "Trapper John, M.D.", Brian Mitchell, a.k.a. Jackpot, established himself as one of the true Kings of the Broadway musical, starting with "Ragtime." Today, of course, he is known as Brian Stokes Mitchell, a four-time Tony Award nominiee as Best Performance by a Lead Actor in a Musical. He won the award for his performance in the 2000 revival of "Kiss Me Kate." He sang "The Impossible Dream (The Quest)" at Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's funeral.

Haha that's hilarious, GREED IS LAME.
So that answers my question I had as a kid, this really is Trapper John from Mash.. 25 years later. Pretty cool.

trapper john md was spinoff from the movie "mash",not the tv show "mash".. the tv show "mash" producers wanted royalty payments if they made claim that it was a tv spinoff, so "trapper john md" tv execs instead claimed the spinoff was from the movie "mash" to avoid future syndication royalty payments that results from tv show spinoffs. (there are no movie syndication royalty payments thats why they used the movie as a 25 yr later spinoff)
