I've seen a 3kw turbine similar to this. Its actually much louder than forward mounted ones. -- I think becauce the blades have to pass through slower moving air just behind the sail and make a little shudder as they do that. It cant be beat for simplicity though. I like it. The noise is not a problem in any event.
I had not seen it yet but probably this design is out there too. I thought about the interference the pole could have in the air when the blade passes behind it but I tried to minimize it by putting the blades far away and in angle from the pole, with a sail in between to help to direct the whole turbine assembly and at the same time to arrange the airflow in a way to diminish the turbulence created by the pole. Good comment!
Can not answer to that! It is just an idea from the top of my head. But, like with any propeller, a good design to match the application would be the best answer. The botton line is that more and more people should get involved in looking for ways to supply the future with new sources of power today, not tomorrow.
I made another design that can be completely housed and would not come against noise ordinances. I think it is simple and can be used in industrial scale. Just need someone with vision. Take a look at 'ocean power, the blue power'.

Down wind turbines are quite a common and old idea. They suffer somewhat from 'wind shadow' behind the tower. You can buy smaller ones like this now.

Hmmm, would this design make the turbine quieter?
