The Hudson Tunnels are what caused this! If it wasn't for their low height, they could run taller bi-level trains comprised of Superliners along the NEC! Or may'be Amtrak should buy some Comet 6's !
@s7o0a0p NJT and the LIRR run bi-levels in and out of Penn Station all the time--Amtrak could invest in that type of equipment since the Superliners are too tall for DC and NYC but apparently the type the commuter railroads use aren't. Would definitely boost capacity--only problem is a lot of those "seats" are hard plastic with a thin covering...or they could take the cheap way out (again) and just couple a couple (haha) extra Amfleets on the back of trains they know they might've overbooked.
@ecoRfan Your right as to what you said. If you look at Amtrak trains back in the 1990's to 2003, the normal Northeast Direct ( also know as the Northeast Regional Today) use to usally carry 10 cars instead of only 7 cars. and the Long distant trains carried 14 cars for the ones that left Penn station. Amtrak Need's to use more passenger cars than leaving them in thier railyards.
Thanks for sharing. I'll be in NYC in December and I'm looking into which transport I should take for a round trip to DC with my 75 year old grandma and this video will certainly help choosing! Cheers.
Who said Amtrak doesn't make money or sale tickets & what we as a nation need is more railcars & passenger train. Cool video looks like a people like Amtrak..
Dang I want to ride Amtrak on the NEC. But I don't want to be one of those poor passengers who are forced to be "standees". Great video showing what's on an Amtrak Regional.
Wow! That's crowded! How many cars were on that train? Its funny, they can hook together a lot of Amfleet coaches if they wanted to, so I wonder why they didn't if they knew they had booked that many passengers. Was the Cafe Car crowded?
Amtrak admits to overbooking. They say it's because of no-shows. Even the Cafe car was crowded. They tried giving us $50 towards another ticket. We held out and got a $200 refund. I asked the conductor to write on my stub that I was standing, he was pretty snotty about it. That's why it took the video. Fortunately a young woman gave her set up for my 84 year old mother. It's sad that no young men stood up.
It is not much different for NJ Transit and Long Island Railroad Trains from New York Penn Station at times

I went to NY again a few weekends ago. Took the bus this time, it was great, $70 round trip for two. The bus had wifi, satellite tv and took 4 hours.

Maybe in some cases Amtrak should just make these trains longer, add coaches.

It's a very European-looking scene. :) No wonder why the US want to build more high speed lines.
