  • for newbies: in theory its a very detailed normal map in this case a model itself sculpted and with easy painting then the artist can create mixing color maps one above each other until reach the final result;

  • @guitarspectre One method I've read about is to create a course map and a fine detail map by protecting on different subD levels. I personaly like to generate one normal map from ZB and a fine detail grayscale map from the diffuse in Photoshop using the highpass filter and combine them in the normal bumpmap shader in Max.
