Claire was so amazing in the scene with Rudy in this episode.. so patient and calm.. exactly how I want to be when I have children. Cliff was great with her also.. they are a great example of serious parenting skills that work.

There is a difference between spanking a child and beating them and it appears that some people don't realize that. Swatting a child 3-5 times on the butt for doing wrong is far different than, say, slapping them across the face or knocking them to the floor or breaking bones. Yes, teach your child proper values. But like any parent will tell you, those values are going to need reinforcement from time to time because kids will push the boundaries.
And when reinforcing those values, spanking is an option. Actually, I've found it to be the opposite from what you said. I've found kids whose parents don't spank them to be quite rude and disrespectful. Why? Because they don't have a healthy fear of their parents. And, no, I'm not saying you should make your kid fearful of you, just that they know you say what you mean and you mean what you say.
