There are many expressive possibilities in the many types of ragtime; by no means is all ragtime "fun," thank God! The beauty of Scott Joplin's work lies in its sheer lyricism, its plaintiveness while maintaining such rhythmic drive and the way in which it so perfectly mingles the vernacular and the classical.
Study the piece, listen to other renditions like Joshua Rifkin's, and you will find mine is a very fair and even handed criticism. Dowling is one of the best pianists around, but anybody can have an off night.
After the virtuosity of Graceful Ghost, a dissappointing effort by Mr. Dowling. He fails to maintain the proper syncopation of Ragtime and allows Stride and even some Boogy-woogie to infiltrate the piece. Too many false notes in the last section that grate on the ear. All in all, a C-.
Technically, you're an excellent piano player. However, I don't particularly like the change of syncopation in the middle of the piece. Also, some of the incorrect notes you play could be mitigated by slowing down just a tad.
woow!! i'm speechless!! he is awesome!! he has a really good technique and he feels what he plays!! woow!! i am impressed!! I play this rag , we are 8 flutes and it's veery nice!! xxx
Richard Dowling is up there with the greats of ragtime. This performance is riveting, bittersweet, and in the true Joplin tradition. Not an excessive amount of added notes and most importantly, not too fast, as the master intended.
hey just commenting on the part about Joplin's piano skills compared to others, not mine. Don't get too offended by this remark, look it up yourself- its just the truth

find dick hymans version of this its better
felonybees 1 year ago
Hyman's version is good, but I find it a bit fast. Dowling's version here has many lovely touches - but I find the accelerandos a bit mannered.

TheCamster121 2 years ago 7
@TheCamster121
yeah its a great song :) but its not too hard to learn, i mean i had more problems with the entertainer and maple leaf rag.

i like the little improvs he does...especially raising an octave in the last section
ragtime was meant to be fun, not strict and strenuous like other classical styles

Great pianist. I think it is not always good to play the bass in octaves. It thickens the texture.

In my ears this is the worst way to play this. Hate it! It is too staccato, i think.
