  • nice rubato

  • This music makes me happy. But geeze, the comments on this page. I was unaware that ragtime piano had geeks too.

  • find dick hymans version of this its better

  • Hyman's version is good, but I find it a bit fast. Dowling's version here has many lovely touches - but I find the accelerandos a bit mannered.

  • Now THAT's how you play ragtime: awesome!

  • fuckin love it

  • There are many expressive possibilities in the many types of ragtime; by no means is all ragtime "fun," thank God! The beauty of Scott Joplin's work lies in its sheer lyricism, its plaintiveness while maintaining such rhythmic drive and the way in which it so perfectly mingles the vernacular and the classical.

  • im trying to learn how to play it, its sickeningly hard, but its a great song

  • @TheCamster121

yeah its a great song :) but its not too hard to learn, i mean i had more problems with the entertainer and maple leaf rag.

  • Impressive!!!!!!

  • i like the little improvs he does...especially raising an octave in the last section

ragtime was meant to be fun, not strict and strenuous like other classical styles

  • i forgot how much i loved it.

  • somehow i slightly cried. not the majesty greatness, not cuz its beautiful. but something else that emotional

  • shit he's very good. i wish i had his talent! :D

  • it is not all talent it is about 10% talent and 90% hard work

  • good answer

  • right ;)

    *thumbs up*

  • To narrowarrows,

Study the piece, listen to other renditions like Joshua Rifkin's, and you will find mine is a very fair and even handed criticism. Dowling is one of the best pianists around, but anybody can have an off night.

  • shit he's very good. i wish i had his talent! :D

  • play you piano ????

  • After the virtuosity of Graceful Ghost, a dissappointing effort by Mr. Dowling. He fails to maintain the proper syncopation of Ragtime and allows Stride and even some Boogy-woogie to infiltrate the piece. Too many false notes in the last section that grate on the ear. All in all, a C-.

  • After that criticism, we'll all be expecting a video of you playing this piece better then Mr. Dowling here.

  • "we will be unable to play your piece as it requires a left-handed piano."

  • You sir, are made of Win! I forgot how much i liked Ragtime. Thank you for this wonderful performance.

  • This really is beautiful. His playing is traditional yet has unique touches. I love it!

  • I cannot get enough of this recording. Can't read music but can replicate in just a few days just listening. This is nothing but awesome!

  • Great pianist. I think it is not always good to play the bass in octaves. It thickens the texture.

  • What a privilege to be able to enjoy this on youtube!

  • great job! :o)

  • I would kill for that shirt ;) otherwise... Great playing :P Learning it right now :D

  • me to pang pang!!!! :)

  • wow i love the B section how the melody start off then the stride comes. I WANNA LEARN THIS NOW :)

  • Technically, you're an excellent piano player. However, I don't particularly like the change of syncopation in the middle of the piece. Also, some of the incorrect notes you play could be mitigated by slowing down just a tad.

  • that was really good...i'm a fan of Joplin's music

  • dude that was really good...i'm a fan of Joplin's music

  • It's supposed to be staccato... I think he's the best at these novelty pieces.

  • hmmmm...

  • I love Rags.

My bass friends played it in a concert as an ensemble.

It seriously has a nice ring to it

  • Fabulous! I'm impressed.

  • woow!! i'm speechless!! he is awesome!! he has a really good technique and he feels what he plays!! woow!! i am impressed!! I play this rag , we are 8 flutes and it's veery nice!! xxx

  • Delightful! And what's more, you looked delighted to be playing it!

  • he played it with his soul, really amazing, and to me it's truly the best version I've ever heard. Grats

  • That was an amazing performance - never heard it like that before! Very professional and musical as well.

  • There are different typs of written because u can change the order of the different parts.

I'm playing it too :P and he plays alright and awesome....

    Nice performance !

  • I am playing it too, and he doesn't play as it's written, but it's still good^^

  • Wow!

Richard Dowling is up there with the greats of ragtime. This performance is riveting, bittersweet, and in the true Joplin tradition. Not an excessive amount of added notes and most importantly, not too fast, as the master intended.

    Bravo.

  • awesome! Scott Joplin is such a good pianist( this guy isn't Scott Joplin, though. it's one of the 50 piano rags by scott joplin)

  • Well, Lets See You Play All Five Pages of That With Repeats And Syphilis Your Hands.

    And Not Play Mediocre.

  • hey just commenting on the part about Joplin's piano skills compared to others, not mine. Don't get too offended by this remark, look it up yourself- its just the truth

  • Richard it was so good, I wish I could been there, I miss you and your playing

  • -Perfect!!!

  • great interpretation....I am motivated to pick up this piece again and emulate Richard Dowling (if that is possible!)

  • Excellent.

Couldn't have been any better, you truly understand the feel and speed of Ragtime.

  • Absolutely wonderful!! I wish I could have been there:-(

    C.Troxel

  • it does not get any better than this.

  • Excellent

  • Ragtime: The Music of the Gods

  • thats great, maybe a little too slow

  • most excellent - Zefren Advocate of the Melbourne Shuffle

  • +++++

  • Beautiful! I'm jealous I didn't get there first!

    Mr. Dowling is fantastic.
