it neat and a waste all at the same time, why not do it a home, why move into the boonies uprooting your kids life all in the name of a headache, whats funny is that cabin is more done than some of the crap hes done on his survivor series put a tarp over the roof board up the windows and pipe a wood stove done
OK, I love the idea of living off the grid, but seriously? Starting this project in October? Deciding he needs another cabin in February? That's just poor planning. Why not plan all winter and start building in the spring? Oh yeah...less drama = less interest.
Well I have lived pretty much self suffiecent myself now for 10 years living like a nomad, no bills to pay and just traveling around the country. Its definetly a way of life. That is for sure. But i do find it funny that TV and mass media pays the bills for Les Stroud. I guess we do whatever we can to make our lifes the way we want them.
jonpaulmoen...you just gave me the first laugh of the morning, haha. "You can't live that way when you get old". i'm sure there are 10000 years or so of settlers (and my parents) who would laugh right in your pampered face...and probably hit you with an axe. :)
that barn is ugly as hell.........if they would have used an architect to design the exterior......i think more people would understand this type of lifestyle
the only way technology would work in unison with nature (not harming, but benefiting ecosystems) would be if people were only allowed a certain amount of caloric intake or energy/resource intake per day. technology is nothing unless we are there to use it.
depends, really. land isn't that expensive when you start looking at places like nebraska, idaho, etc. however in order to build the stuff itself you'd either need a "non-traditional" job (such as les' film/music stuff) so you could be there and do it yourself, or you'd need a high-paying 9-5 job to pay someone else to do it all.
but it's about not being dependent on technology. Imagine if the entire internet went down tomorrow. How many people would go insane, or even not be able to work since so many people use it on their job. Remember Y2K and how freaked out people got. That feeling increases exponentially everyday.
half-true. It's one's fault of their own that we are dependent on technology. However, it's everywhere and you have to go to these lengths to get away from it. If you have a standard 9-5, good luck.
It seems like a little patience and forethought this could have been much simpler. This is a great series by the way. Im just confused about the rush rush rush attitude. Just seems like this should have been much more enjoyable.
You seem to be obsessed with a rabid hatred of Les Stroud. Whatever gets you through the night I guess, I'm sure Les is all choked up about it though. LOL.

Here is a guy who makes more money than the average family from his TV show Survivorman, endorsements, etc...
Not to even mention the freebies/discounts that he got from this show, promos/free items, discounts, reduced/free labor/material and a paycheck once this "documentary" was completed...
Oh yeah, his wind generator is 20 feet too low for optimal output, way below the trees etc... And me and a buddy did all the work in a summer, no contractors, on weekends, for less than $10,000...
Les is living the life he wants, doing what he wants and living with his family in a rural retreat that they wanted. I suspect he doesn't give a shit what some know it all youtoob blowhard from the US thinks!

You can't get your materials into the site due to weather, but you can pay for a helicopter to deliver them?
You can't afford a log home after attending a log building course? Either you don't have the time (which you knew in advance) or it is beyond your skills, too much work or just not cost comparable for you to do the work.
To bring your family to this location from his narrative sounds like some of the paranoid/end of the world/black helicopter people I have built log homes for..

This is the biggest piece of salesmanship I have ever seen...
Bought secluded property with no water? Not real bright unless the price offsets the cost of a well... (9 grand and he can't afford it? Guess no well drillers wanted to be on the show)
Road is in bad shape? Fix it or don't complain...
No Phone? Your wife says your cell phone works, if not get a satellite phone.
I realize he just wanted to "jump into" this project head first or whatever, but damn, do some research before hand and wait for good weather. What a fool.
but what a story! I know what you mean though, I'm trying to figure out "why" exactly it was decided to start the whole project in fall...maybe just that, a good story
Yeah, but it kinda makes me wonder how many YEARS you have to live "off the grid" to offset the carbon foot print of moving a cabin worth of material by helicopter?
I see your point, its gonna take a few years...BUT STILL, overall hes going to create wayy less waste and use less energy than if he were not to do this
You do understand that he filmed those at different times, right? He also mentioned that it was a varied winter with periods of mild weather and then cold. Have you ever actually lived in a northern climate?

Uhhh
Yes
I see the conditions and camera cuts
RE 2nd question, "Have you lived in a no climate?"
I live in CO at 10,000 ft yr round for 16 yrs. I own a handcrafted log home co. based in BC Canada.
And the cabin we built is at over 11,500, no services/hydro or winter access w/o a snowmobile and snowshoes, go up 3x a wk, it is a fantastic GETAWAY. but no way in hell would I deprive my family of friends, basic services, etc.
Tire chains, do Canadians use them? 30 minutes and I have never gotten stuck.
Montanans use them as if it were second nature, and in sink with the environment!

I don't think anyone could realistically afford helicopter transport just to live off the grid, lol.
