i knew of a dentist in Syracuse that owned/flew one... i dont know if that is this guy's.... but the paint scheme on this aircraft is 100% historically accurate NOT of a D8 but rather a E.V... which was given to Jasta 6 in August of 1918.. 1 pilot got two kills in 3 days in it but Jasta 6 then had two separate wing failures which forced IDFLIEG to ground ALL E.Vs until an investigation was done and so Anthony Fokker strengthened it and they were then named the d8 and redeployed in October 1918
@FredDude27 LOL of course they are, first of all you wouldnt want real 1s because they would weigh the aircraft down...and second of all with gun laws in the USA you could only have semi automatic MGs and that would be retarded for twin SPANDAU MGS.; The FOKKER E.V(later the d.VIII but E.V paint scheme is shown here) is the best looking and coolest aircraft of the war.. if only the war woulda lasted longer. we could have read after action reports of Multiple D8s attacking SOPWITH SNIPES (DROOLS)
I remember seeing both of Brian's D-8's flying at ORA, his first one in 1993 when I was 11 and this one in 2000. I've seen in on display at fantasy of flight, but haven't been lucky enough to see it fly there. I'd love to see this and the Morane AI he has flying together!
The reason it looks like Brian's D.8 is because it IS Brian's D.8. After several years at ORA, Kermit bought it about 6 years ago. He brought it to the '05 Dawn Patrol in Dayton, where he used it for rotary demo's. Oddly, he didn't fly it(probably due to insurance, which was rather steep as I recall)...P S
This looks almost identical to the same machine built by Brian Coughlin of Skaneateles, New York and which flew at Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome for some years...
Wow, this is great. That's the real deal, smoke, engine sound and everything. I feel like I've got a window straight back to 1918. Thanks for sharing!
@huevparolbla damn that is just too awesome! I didn't know anyone still used rotary engines. That machine gun/fart sound is just amazing, though. I am VERY impressed!
Wow, found this video accidentally and what a find. I had no idea anyone had built such a faithful replica. What a beauty. I've been to OR a couple of times in the last few years but didn't see this bird. Is it still flying? The pilot looks like Kermit Weeks.
pdutube: It is fitted with a nine-cylinder 160 h.p. Gnôme Monosoupape rotary engine. It had a selector switch which allowed you to turn the spark to some cylinders off and on to lower the revs. It also had a coupé switch where they would "blip" the engine. This was harder on the engine. Yes, it used castor oil lubricant... that is the whitish-blue smoke you see spewing from the exhaust valves.
Re; ChicaWolverina comment about this being a "reduced scale A/C: No, this is NOT reduced scale. This is a FULL SIZE Fokker D VIII built by Brian Coughlin and it flew @ Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in N.Y. for a few years. Two were built.
@BavarianBomberWrench Technically the paint scheme is not of the DVIII but rather an E.V which was flown in JASTA 6 in August of 1918... after IDFLIEG investigations & Anthony Fokker being allowed to produce the aircraft the way he originally wanted with strengthened wing at a cost of drag/speed.. the aircraft was redeploy in Oct as the D.VIII when they were redeployed the LOZENGE was darker than on the E.Vs that this 1 PERFECTLY matches. this is 1 BEAUTIFUL & ACCURATE E.V
I have seen this beautiful D VIII fly at Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in NY after Brian Coughlin built it. Most spectacular WW I a/c I have ever seen fly and Brian was in the process of building a second 1.* Mr. Weeks, you handle this old girl like I'd imagine Theo Osterkamp handled his in 10/1918. Thank you so very much for your enormous contribution by keeping all these old birds flying. You are a true hero and an inspiration for our children. Fly far, fly fast & soft 3 point landings forever!Danke

That is more power than any Fokker monoplane fielded by the Jastas. Is there a rotary back in production that would fit her better?

What an awesome airplane! I wonder if it uses the Oberursel UII? It would explain the staccato sound. Does it use castor oil as an engine lubricant?
