Germany is capitalist . It has the largest national economy in Europe, the fourth largest by nominal GDP in the world working on a social market economy.
i've been pushing greenpower for over 4 years now. started with wind generated and have now climbed up to the solar projects. i;m micro at this point but hope to soon start selling it back to the grid. next project will be a solar concentrator. i have acquired about 3000x 8" round mirrors and plan on affixing them to an old sattelite dish along with a dental technicians magnifying glass. i guess the trick will be finding the best position for the magnifier. any suggestions?
Lets also not forget that Diane Feinstien (D) blocked a huge solar power project in the Mojave Desert in CA due to tortoise migration. Not starting a political war, but just want people to throw rocks at all of the proper glass houses. Renewable energy is the future, the technology is becoming more efficient, and it is about time that we as a people starting giving a damn about our future and our future generations. Plus our economic state and job growth depend on it.

The Green Tower people have designed enhancements to this effect that allows their tower to run at 89% at night, with 6 DAYS reserve, no plumbing needed.
2/3 of the greenhouse area is suitable for farming with about a 170% increase in crop output.
It could be a housing co-op, with about 3400 shareholders sharing the costs and profits. Who needs big investors? Same price as a coal fired plant.

Solar energy is a waste of time, money and land. With the same amount of money it takes to build a solar power plant we could build a nuclear power plant that produces a lot more energy and uses less land.
one of the things I cant fucking stand is people saying shit like "Solar power isn't efficient and would destroy the economy" or another comment about renewable energy such as "Wind energy kills thousands of birds a year"
well guess what. hundreds of millions to billions of birds die every year from flying into class of buildings, solar power technology has been increasing in technical advances in a very fast pace and will become cheaper then oil sooner or later.
meadowsboy, I highly agree with you that this is our future. I remember when computers were first introduced the critics that said it would never catch on, that is was not suitable for the world. Now look....
I am currently taking TTC Solar Training and hope to be part of this new generation. Let the others continue to think the way they do, they will just be left behind. Look at Germany right now, leader of solar energy!
At least the first two plants shown are at Daggett, CA and run by PG&E. The middle one was built in 1978, called Solar One, during the Carter presidency. When Reagan was elected he terminated all these programs. Martin Marietta Aerospace built Solar One, had four such projects in the works, and killed them all, closing its heliostat plant in Pueblo. Solar One ran at 10 MW for 10 years, and then was decommissioned. It's still there at 34.871848,-116.834321. Now Spain has largest mirror plant.
We are going to have to deal with Nuclear waist eather way regaurdless! The ship could be covered in solar tile to keep the batteries charged on long voyages to markets that want electricity to power we-com infrastructure and cars.

I just wonder how much DIRTY power (mining, transport, manufacturing, assembly) it takes to produce a facility like this, or even a home sized one. Anyone have those figures? How long will it take for this facility to neutralize that?
it is about 4 years for PhotoValic cells, no idea on these that use oil to create steam and move turbines, but i do know that they are more efficient again, so obviously less than that
however there comes another point, myself in Australia, i have been looking at implementing a system to completely substitute my power needs off Solar, again i havent looked at sourced panels directly from China, only local importers, etc. but i am looking at between the 22-28 000 mark. Where we our bill is around $1400 a year. I understand the price of electricity will be on teh increase, but keep in mind if it doesnt that is at least 15 years until i get a return on my investment
Go GREEN or get ready to pay more and more and more.... Home owner generated not Power Company generated. Run your own lives and live free breath easier and for less.
Good luck powering your home on Solar unless you have lots of land.
Power output ~250 Watts per square metre. (about 2 to 4 light bulbs). But then you have to figure in night time and cloudy time and morning and night, which will reduce the net output by about a factor of seven (look up "capacity factor"), will give you about 30 w
PV cells are excellent for desert or dry climates. Notsogood in the Midwest or Northeast. Current solar tech is good for supplementing your power source, not replacing it. There are a few breakthroughs recently, but it's a matter of getting the right capital to bring these things to market, and we all know how difficult that is, so...
Exactly. Wind and solar make great supplements but they will never be able to provide base load power. Wind turbines are nearing their theoretical efficiency and solar panels may ideally reach 30-40% efficiency, but are still limited by a capacity factor of about 12-20% (~30-40%) for wind.
Compare this with an average capacity factor of 92% for nuclear power combined with its high power density, and you will quickly see that wind and solar cannot begin to compete with it
Well, I say we do it all, including hydrogen, tidal, natural gas and other methods. We should also double our investment in fusion. I know it seems like a pipedream, but IMHO at this point it's not a matter of if, but when. And sooner if better than later. I'm a Progressive and I have no problem with fission either. Second generation reactors can now use spent fuel from other reactors, which is a cool development. I'd like as broad an energy portfolio as possible for our country.
What about the waste of nuclear energy??? At this moment and in the future no solution for that. Or putting it in the ground and store it is a solution???
People, please think. We do not need any coal, gas, nuclear or even fusion. The energy source is up there and for FREE!
This movie is not electric power, but concentrated solar energy directly heating thermic oil to at least 450 degr. C. This heated oil is used to generate steam. This steam again is powering turbines to generate electricity. To give you an idea, 500 x 550 km is enough to generate all energy required on Earth!!!! So think before make any make any statements.
actually power output per square meter is 1kW if its perfectly clear day and around 700 W on ordinary day, difussion radiation is about 150W, at night you use batteries that you charged during the day.
Not possible. solar energy flux is about 350 watts per square metre. But I'll be generous and grant you 1 KW per m^2. I'll also be generous and give you a 40% conversion efficiency. Down to 400 watts already. But the sun is behind the earth at night, and is not always overhead during the day. I'll be generous and grant you a 20% "capacity" factor to account for when the sun doesn't shine.
No you don't understand. 350 watts per square metre is *all the energy that there is*. Even the most efficient solar panels possible can only tap a fraction of that. My previous post was being generous on all counts and the average power was still less than 100 Watts per square meter
im doing electrical engineering and renewabale energy degree, and tuttttttttt99 is pretty much correct, if also an ass ;-) the way i see it renewables cant power this overcrowded over indulgent world. but the sooner we develop the renewable technologies the better equipped we will be for the return of the dark ages, ya dig?
Why are we not replacing illicit opium in Afghanistan with this "alternative" solar industry? Afghanistan creates 0 kWh of energy and tons of illicit opium.
you know how like there's no sunlight during cloudy day and night time. and how we also used windmills as a source of energy, why not just create jobs where people's energy can be used to store energy: muscle powers man. that would be like working out and getting payed at the same time... put that on the list as "renewable energy"... lol.
These don't need to turn the deserts into a vast dust bowl, no! And turning it into a giant black field (of PV) is obviously a no no. Using billions of post driven COOL mirrors (without the need to bulldoze) is the final solution to UNLIMITED SOLAR thermal power with heat storage.
The CPV concept allows thousands of times of the energy production than normal one sun PV. Why? Cause the mirrors extend the rare (such as CIGS material) "range"! CPV is twice as eff as thermal, but needs storage...
I see no reason why USA could have gone that far in destroying another country not mindful of the poeple living there. This is what i could call selfishness. Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. Can they forget USA so easily, i think the answer is NO. So, is there any other country who is afraid of USA, may be or may be not. But let us for time who is a great healer to heal the wound of the people in Nagasaki and Hiroshima
We stopped the war that Japan started. Now they are our friends . . . . we helped them rebuild. It amazes me how folks have such a twisted take on history that they can make America out to the bad guy when we were the victim. Remember Pearl Harbor?
one mans conquest is another man liberation. Hawaii is an occuied territory, illegally annexed. It amazes me how some people think history is so one sided, Americas hands are not clean.
Also, what a silly discussion to have on a video about solar energy
This setup in the video is beyound real. That setup probably cost like 200 million us dollars.
A more realistic approach is start at home. All you need is about couple 15W panels. Charge controler, couple deep cycle marine batteries, and a inverter. (conver DC to AC power) and you will be be able to power lights and stuff in your home. During the day the solar PV panels recharges the battery bank.
We got the plans for the nuclear bomb from Germany and it ENDED the war in the pacific and we didn't start those wars. Where did you get the 52 wars from?
don't think for a second any of us have a choice in what our government does. they call it a democracy but its a dictatorship. every four years we get to choose between 2 different dictators that were predetermined to be suitable figureheads by the wealthy elite. democrat or republican doesn't matter, the important decisions are all in the hands of a small group of wealthy men that probably control most of the other countries too.
@Donovancs1 We let it happen.....WHAT BS. Funny i guess i should just take down the gov O wait large numbers of people fight against them and have still lost. The USA gov has to much power and all countries seem to think we like it well fyi we can't stand it but we are at the hands of are gov and we get shit from people like you for it. So go to school and come to are land become the president and change things for the better.
@Hobemaster I think it is time for Canada and the US to jump on the bandwagon, we only have a small percentage of solar powered projects compared to Germany.
@jukio02 The "German model" is inherently social capitalist. Please stop posting if you don't know what you're talking about. It only spreads more bad information.
A 100% efficient heat into energy panel would still contribute ALL of the heat back into the biosphere, since all usage of said energy breaks back down into heat (as in lights).
However, We might as well use the heat that's baking the deserts to power our lives (and somewhat cool the deserts).
That's why I promote "operation desert mirrors" Cause some of that heat will actually be reflected back into space!
3; to offset negative albedo (to make up for melting glaciers by use of billions of mirrors)
4; to partially cool the deserts such that we can grow crops (and retain more CO2 by use of soil).
5; To create many jobs.
6; To help other countries do the same
And 7; So, as seen from space, the deserts would glisten, proving that humanity can prevent self fulfilling doomsday prophecies caused by fossil fuel(ed) depletion!
Hi how about if we covered the deserts with these. Now you know to convert heat into energy you have to take away the heat, So are we going to start to cool the earth?
Not really, most energy we use is released in the form of heat anyway. Look at a light bulb for example - 85% thermal energy (in an efficent one) and 15% light energy.
The Sun is one of the most important energy sources we don't use nearly enough of. It's there every day. If every house had a PV system on their roof, do you have any idea how many electric plants could be shut down? It's not the silver bullet, but it's way up there.
yeh it uses nuclear fusion or something? pretty sure humans be trying to make a nuclear fusion reactor by 2035 (so we can have our own little sun on earth) lol
No he sounds more like a hillbilly who has no need for any electricity. Except for, And i could carry on with a really rude sentence here but im not going to :D
On every sensible solar energy video I watch there are always uneducated assholes commenting. Are you being paid to be an idiot? This is the most revolutionary thing the world could need. This would boost every market and increase the activity on a wide range. This could power automated machines effortlessly and product mass food on a larger scale. Some of you obviously have no brain.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I wonder what kind of environmental impact this would have on the earth if we built these everywhere in all our deserts. There has GOT to be a negative impact...I mean look at that. deserts would turn to shaded areas.
Why is it that people are shot down in flames for trying to think outside the box? There are serious flaws in most alternative energy sources but it's considered blasphemy to say so
Its a no brainer really...we must get on with this...just think the US would control there own energy, no more bodybags,no more death squads,no more lies,no more Cheney,
Check out the amazing, phenomenal article on large scale SOLAR ENERGY VIABILITY in the January 2008 issue of 'SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN'! Don't let anyone tell you it's not feasible!
NOT HALF!! the oil companies are happy to be minded and protected by governments who go to war on their behalf using yours and my tax to look after their interests.... wakey wakey!
Just promote the Renewable Energy Infratructure, it's the only hope for the future. Ever heard of POC Yup, good ol'e oil will soon be too pricy for you and me. After that (post oil crisis) we will not have the energy to build one of the greatest achievement, the needed REI. So we had better promote renewables, esp on desert!
Is this a solar farm for public power? So its still 'on grid' power ,yes? Does anyone think that this huge plot of land could have better uses ,while solar panels could be in the community or at home/business? Solar is great ,but better off grid and at the 'site' of use. COMMENTS?
HAHA, exactly. And they aren't solar panels, they are mirrors (steel and glass). They reflect/concentrate (lightly curved to magnify) light onto that point at the top of the tower. THat thing is a reservoir with water. All that magnified light heats the water inside and electricity is produced just like usual (steam turbine).
Which the price of the USS/Kwh in of this technology currently? Exists some model of small transport that I can install in my house and that I come to be self-contained in energy or proximo of this?
Why don't you google it? There are plenty of companies selling this technology to homeowners. Depending where you live, this might be much cheaper than the electricity you buy off the grid.
You can also check out 'wind power stations'. They might also be cheaper. Again depending on the local weather conditions of your area.

So think before make any make any statements.
mabtka 2 years ago
actually power output per square meter is 1kW if its perfectly clear day and around 700 W on ordinary day, difussion radiation is about 150W, at night you use batteries that you charged during the day.
svedr 2 years ago
Not possible. solar energy flux is about 350 watts per square metre. But I'll be generous and grant you 1 KW per m^2. I'll also be generous and give you a 40% conversion efficiency. Down to 400 watts already. But the sun is behind the earth at night, and is not always overhead during the day. I'll be generous and grant you a 20% "capacity" factor to account for when the sun doesn't shine.
1000 W x 0.4 x 0.2 = 80 W average power
or about 1 light bulb .
tuttt99 2 years ago
maybe with basic solar tech, there is more cutting edge tech now..
flipflop1234567890 2 years ago
No you don't understand. 350 watts per square metre is *all the energy that there is*. Even the most efficient solar panels possible can only tap a fraction of that. My previous post was being generous on all counts and the average power was still less than 100 Watts per square meter
tuttt99 2 years ago
im doing electrical engineering and renewabale energy degree, and tuttttttttt99 is pretty much correct, if also an ass ;-) the way i see it renewables cant power this overcrowded over indulgent world. but the sooner we develop the renewable technologies the better equipped we will be for the return of the dark ages, ya dig?

Why are we not replacing illicit opium in Afghanistan with this "alternative" solar industry? Afghanistan creates 0 kWh of energy and tons of illicit opium.
Agree wind energy can help too.

you know how like there's no sunlight during cloudy day and night time. and how we also used windmills as a source of energy, why not just create jobs where people's energy can be used to store energy: muscle powers man. that would be like working out and getting payed at the same time... put that on the list as "renewable energy"...

But let us for time who is a great healer to heal the wound of the people in Nagasaki and Hiroshima
christevepas 2 years ago
We stopped the war that Japan started. Now they are our friends . . . . we helped them rebuild. It amazes me how folks have such a twisted take on history that they can make America out to the bad guy when we were the victim. Remember Pearl Harbor?
oilhammer04 2 years ago 2
Pearl Harbour? you mean that place in occupied Hawaii?
microphon3 2 years ago
Territories can freely join the Union. Some choose not to, like Puerto Rico.

It wasn't just Pearl Harbor. The Japanese were on a brutal conquest.
oilhammer04 2 years ago
one mans conquest is another man liberation. Hawaii is an occuied territory, illegally annexed. It amazes me how some people think history is so one sided, Americas hands are not clean.
Also, what a silly discussion to have on a video about solar energy

kri007 3 years ago
This setup in the video is beyound real. That setup probably cost like 200 million us dollars.
A more realistic approach is start at home. All you need is about couple 15W panels. Charge controler, couple deep cycle marine batteries, and a inverter. (conver DC to AC power) and you will be be able to power lights and stuff in your home. During the day the solar PV panels recharges the battery bank.

don't think for a second any of us have a choice in what our government does. they call it a democracy but its a dictatorship. every four years we get to choose between 2 different dictators that were predetermined to be suitable figureheads by the wealthy elite. democrat or republican doesn't matter, the important decisions are all in the hands of a small group of wealthy men that probably control most of the other countries too.

A 100% efficient heat into energy panel would still contribute ALL of the heat back into the biosphere, since all usage of said energy breaks back down into heat (as in lights).
However, We might as well use the heat that's baking the deserts to power our lives (and somewhat cool the deserts).
That's why I promote "operation desert mirrors" Cause some of that heat will actually be reflected back into space!
fireofenergy 3 years ago
This has been flagged as spam show
We need to solarfy the deserts:
1; to offset CO2
2; to offset Opec
3; to offset negative albedo (to make up for melting glaciers by use of billions of mirrors)
4; to partially cool the deserts such that we can grow crops (and retain more CO2 by use of soil).
5; To create many jobs.
6; To help other countries do the same
And 7; So, as seen from space, the deserts would glisten, proving that humanity can prevent self fulfilling doomsday prophecies caused by fossil fuel(ed) depletion!
fireofenergy 3 years ago
Hi how about if we covered the deserts with these. Now you know to convert heat into energy you have to take away the heat, So are we going to start to cool the earth?
joemc111 3 years ago
Not really, most energy we use is released in the form of heat anyway. Look at a light bulb for example - 85% thermal energy (in an efficent one) and 15% light energy.
OldTommyFlynns 2 years ago
I like that video. Too short though.
The Sun is one of the most important energy sources we don't use nearly enough of. It's there every day. If every house had a PV system on their roof, do you have any idea how many electric plants could be shut down? It's not the silver bullet, but it's way up there.
horuhe00 3 years ago
The Sun is the ONLY energy source. EVERY other source of energy originates in that ball of fire!

yeh it uses nuclear fusion or something? pretty sure humans be trying to make a nuclear fusion reactor by 2035 (so we can have our own little sun on earth) lol

Why don't you google it? There are plenty of companies selling this technology to homeowners. Depending where you live, this might be much cheaper than the electricity you buy off the grid.
You can also check out 'wind power stations'. They might also be cheaper. Again depending on the local weather conditions of your area.
