Not a rip off, it was inspired by. At least that's what I heard. And the show changed dramatically since it's initial Dragonball premise so it evolved into something else.

That "monkey" from Journey to the West was written by the Chinese 400 years ago..... that was before America was even a country. Many Japanese love journey to the west, they made many anime characters based off Sun Wùkōng and even stories inspired by The Journey to the West.

I love this song , It's from the Chinese musical "Journey to the East" composed by Damon Albarn. The full song is called Monkey Bee, but this version was changed slighly for the olympics Intro. The musical is coming to London in November I think. Really wanna see it.
