  • 35 people misclicked the I LIKE button xD

  • Rather than focus on financial gains or power, like so many people do, Salman Khan instead diverts all his energy and attention to providing an exceptional, extensive online library in which people can empower themselves with knowledge. Khan and staff have restored my faith and confidence in my learning potential and have inspired and greatly encouraged my desire to empower myself with knowledge. May you live long, happy and wonderful life Mr. Khan. Thank you so much!

  • Machines are here to take us, let there be no doubt.

  • wonderful !!!

  • this guy knows ALL these topics??

  • 34 People are drop-outs

  • Imagine harnessing all the video games hardware.. Imagine a virtual chemistry lab for lab projects. All the pieces are out their.. They just need to be brought together.

Kinectfusion can scan objects in.. there is software to simulate chemical interaction, physics software.. ext and on and on. 3D TV with a kinect and you can interact.

    Think big

For hundreds in Hardware you could get a virtual multi million dollar research lab.

  • @abram730 - also real labs via telepresence perhaps.

agree computers are a great tool for understanding nature as processes at any level. I was strongest at maths & sciences at school and attribute that to having spent so much time as a kid hobby coding on the old 8bit machines. things like OLPC and rasperri pi could definitely advance education, but computers need to be presented as tools, not locked down consumer devices. (workplace quote-"you must assume your customers are lazy and stupid")

  • @walter0bz You may find this interesting

    watch?v=hSVo4ejZ7rc

Yes I taught myself turbo pascal way back when.. I was quite proud considering I didn't even have any books on programing.. I simply used the help file a, glorified glossary. I made a game within 2 weeks. Creating dynamic variable data length structures during runtime was more fun(breaking the rules). I wonder if anybody else did that.

  • @abram730 - thanks for the link i just start watching it. Thats exactly what i'm talking about I think. the ominous impending loss of PERSONAL computers, in favor of centralized again. and yet people are doing it willingly.

You want your most important data in your pocket, not on the cloud owned by someone else.

  • @walter0bz "computers need to be presented as tools, not locked down consumer devices."

I agree, 90% + of computers are locked down devices now. Computers + malware.

    watch?v=HUEvRyemKSg

  • @abram730 -

iPad frustrates me enormously. the "rasperri pi" is similar chips, yet presented as a proper computer.

There's a danger that with cloud computing individuals will stop buying "tool" computers altogether, and you have a population of cabbages, customers assumed to be lazy and stupid, deskilled even below "reading & writing" (fingerprinting on iPad.. picture instructions..) just waiting for evolution to eliminate them as an extraneous organ...

  • fantastic work and

    keep it free for everyone!

  • 19:51 ....he who must not be named ... :P

  • Amazing concept...Really great videos...Just one problem - It is based on total surveillance!

The videos are fantastic, but the privacy violations are horrifying and going way too far!!!

thedailyriff-com -> search "Bill Gates Salman Khan"

On the positive side: The (really cool and educational) viedos are accessible without a Khan Academy account. ;) Right here on YouTube. :) No "coaches" or "dashboards" ... but also less surveillance! :)

  • I fucking love this guy's voice.

  • Comment removed

  • DID U guys see voldemort 20:00

  • 19:58 Lord Voldemort behind his shoulder.

  • This is Awesome!

  • shit i thought this was the bollywood actor, i was shocked when i saw the title of this video

  • HEY BALDWIN!!!!!!!!!

  • im from england and ive basically already failed maths and in a way i really wish i had this through the GCSE stages and A level stages it would of helped so much, if only i knew about it back then :(

  • This is history in the making.

  • "Humanizing the classroom by a factor of five or ten!"

    I love that :-D

  • Start>All programs>Microsoft office>Microsoft academy 2012

  • This guy is basically my life teacher! So awesome to see him here!!! :D

  • I'm not sure how I stumbled upon TED, but because I did, I found Khan Academy, and because of Khan Academy I decided to re enroll in college after almost 10 years without schooling. Sal has inspired me to love learning again. Thank you Salman Khan, and thank you TED

  • @cowpacino

    That's awesome, congratulations!

  • @cowpacino this comment makes me want to cry because I know exactly what you mean.

  • Bill Gates sucks.

  • why would anyone dislike this video, i really can't understand that!!

  • why would anyone dislike this?

  • Lord Voldemort says hi on on 20:00

  • bill gates must be thinking at 16:51 , i will clap for you now, "who's got more money"

  • @rockingmilan how ignorant can you get? the khan academy is "not for profit" bill gates is probably thinking... "gee i hope this guy doesnt get more perks than me in the afterlife"

  • He's such an inspirational character. Nice to see there are people like him in the world! His videos helped me in calculus so much :)

  • Also, with Gates's appearance, I can sense that Kahn Academy's free usage could be approaching an end. I really hope Kahn keeps his software available for free, but there are so many greedy and conniving businesspeople out there more than willing to bring him to the dark side. ...Since he worked at a hedge fund maybe he's grown immune to being around greedy people. I don't know. I guess time will tell. I just love this idea so much I'm kinda paranoid.

  • @frillybeamer I sure hope not! He must be a youtube partner and gets so many views every day...he must make money from it. Hopefully that will keep it free for us!

  • I can just sense Pearson using litigation to block the future of this software as it picks up credibility.

  • uhhh voldemort at 20:00 ?

  • Salmans's emotions @16:26 till @16:59 just look. So true, and energy. so bright minded persosn.

  • I get skeptical when anybody says "a global, one-world" anything ("classroom" in this case--16:14), especially when it's about education.

This model is a good tool for individual teachers, not for education at large, and only if teachers created videos for their own students. One video by one person or organization on any subject, esp. history/govt/econ, for many students is a bad idea. They may get the info to be able to pass some standardized test, but there has to be more to learning, right?

  • @animamor Right, there should be thousands of Khan Academies, created by all of the worlds greatest tutors. Each teacher has their own style, some videos on Khan Academy would work better if done by a different teacher. But the delivery, students being able to study at their own pace until they fully grasp a concept, is pretty radical.

  • Comment removed

  • Very informative video. Video is indeed changing the face of education as we know it..

  • Loving this education model. I really wish this would have been available when I was in school. I can see this going somewhere.

  • As an experiential educator this excites me! This can create more time for hands-on based learning in and out of the classroom. I am excited to see where this goes and also hope it takes education in the developing world to new levels!

  • guy looks like jerry seinfeld.....

  • Awesome! I can't wait for this to become mainstream!

  • Those disliking this are almost always teachers. But its not because it isn't a phenomenal tool rather they fear they will lose value in education. Lets face it, this would turn them into tutors while Khan does the teaching. Its unfortunate he can do a better job using youtube and allowing kids to go at their own pace, than teachers will ever be able to do lecturing at the chalkboard.

  • I was actually (after MORE the a few years of stalling) a bit of a math geek in high school, and STILL use a lot of what I learned, but after seeing this program I'm actually tempted to go back to basic arithmetic and go through it all again, JUST to make sure I didn't miss anything and of course, to learn more...

  • sorry!!!

  • @19:02 .....LORD VOLDEMORT!!!!! is he going to teach us?!

  • Wow This is Amazing. Can't wait to re-learn.

  • best video eveerrrr

  • I've used khan academy, it is awesome!

  • Awesome!

  • Bill Gates: hmm hm mmhm... yes tell me more so i can copy your work and make a microsoft version.

    lol. :P

  • @alvisc2002- lol due wtf :)

  • @alvisc2002

I think that Bill Gates might actually be financing them. lol He likes that kind of stuff.

  • @alvisc2002

Bill Gates did actually endorse this guy by saying his family uses Khan Academy and it is great!

  • @alvisc2002 Bill Gates should be introduced to Jacque Fresco and his lectures.

  • 25 people want an elitist education system.

  • This movement gives me hope for humanity.

  • what is his website called? I thought it was TED.com, but it wasnt o.O

  • @genrytov

Drag your mouse over it. It's:

    khanacademy

    .

    org

  • i like the way he talks =3

  • u r great!

  • how on earth does this guy know so much?

  • Comment removed

  • This is the future of education..no doubt about that..! Best part is u can learn at ur own pace..pause and rewind and review it....Different students have a different pace of learning of different topics...this problem will be solved with video lectures .

  • Be personally taught Calculus by Ray Romano? Yes please.

  • This guy can make home-schooling possible for every kid..

  • Is Bollywood people want to be just be slaver of underworld and politicians.

Bollywood change the life of all living existence of Indian. Either to stand with Anna Hazzare to fight against corruption or B coward Afraid from politician to take action on U and B with the people who want to crush the people who want safe India, and want to crush the people say against corruption. To reform India Bollywood and movement Anna hazare make nice picture.

  • The Khan Academy is incredible. We completely agree with using video to make education more accessible - for that reason Donny's List was created. It's an online directory for people who are dedicated to teaching online, through free video applications (like Skype). We want to connect people (regardless of where they are) with quality teachers. Find out more about Donny's List - Join the list!

  • Fantastic idea! Because.... like Michio Kaku said: We see the births of a type 1 civilization. 1 global language (internet) english! 1 global education system performed by geniuses who built and invent these systems is a logical step :)

p.s. I realy like the look on salman's face when he gets a standing ovation!

  • khan, you make me WANT to study. Thank you.

  • Khan for 2012 president!!

  • my super dreery religion teacher disliked this lol

  • Now I can finally learn advanced maths. I am a physician. :)

  • Bill Gates, I need some money for college!! PLEASE!!

  • This is the only TED talk for which I gave a standing ovation after watching it on YouTube.

  • At the end they give a standing ovation, and Salman's just like

    "wow...I did that?" haha

    good stuff

  • I absolutely agree. I used to daydream about self-paced learning in school.

  • remarkable invention for educational learning

  • Ya sorry that was the spell check on my phone

  • these channel is retarded

  • @boosiebadazz725 This*, you should try his free videos.

  • @boosiebadazz725 The irony... it burns...

  • el poder de yutub!!!he ehe

  • Ross Geller.

  • Really well worked....

  • I'm very glad to have stumbled upon his channel. (:

  • @sw33tMoi as was i :)

  • EULER!!!

  • Coming from a strong video background, media based education such as this is defiantly one of the best ways not only to convey useful information, but help people retain what they have learned. Bravo Khan!

  • i need a poo

  • I adore him and what he has done. He exemplifies what another TEDster, Shelene Bryan had told her audience as she was concluding her talk about how her life changed as well due to one seemingly inauspicious event: "I am not concerned that anyone in this room will fail at anything... My concern is that you're gonna succeed at something that didn't matter." And he did just that. He switched careers and succeeded at something that totally mattered.

    So...Thank you...thank you....thank you....

  • this is really impressive forward thinking. i think it will take off even further within a short time. it's like giving education, elements of what makes social media and video games fun.

  • Well done Ray. Everybody loves Raymond :)

  • How the hell does this video have ANY dislikes!? WTH.

  • @prospectnyc Probabally christians wanting to continue keeping people in the dark on science.

  • @1028Dawn Where did that come from and what has it got to do with this video? It's douchebags like you who give atheists a bad name.

  • @Muso992 If you'd go to the Khan pg you' see that it is mostly science and math, 2 of christian's biggest enemies. Over 90% of scientists believe in evolution because of their knowledge in science and math. This means the most intelligent people in the world don't support creationsim. Thus, Im sure Salman Khan is an atheist as well.

  • @1028Dawn I know very well what is on Khan's website - I go there every day. Still a very vague connection you made, since this actual video is about the education system. Yes, Salman Khan is most probably an atheist (you really have no way of knowing fore sure unless he states it in a video I haven't wached), but I'm sure he doesn't go around dissing other people's beliefs completely out of the blue... because he isn't an asshole.

  • @Muso992 This is a discussion. The words your using are a sign of ignorance.

  • @1028Dawn What? Please clarify. Or do I need to clarify?

  • I saw the future of education

  • The last few words were a little rehearsed. I like the idea of the student being able to see what holes they have. And instead of being blind to where all your education is leading, this shows a very clear progression.

  • Ha, my sons new school in Chiangmai, Thailand use this....well done!

  • Cool homeschool.

  • swiss cheese gaps-Exactly!!

  • i love khan academy! you helped me pass college calculus salman khan! much love <3

  • This guy is one of my Idols!!

  • this is what I've been trying to explain to everyone who cared to listen

this is how classrooms should be

    this is awesome

  • Ooh another galaxy. Ooh another galaxy. Ooh another galaxy. *box trap falls over James Woods.

  • 13:34 to 14:34 is the entire core of the Khan Academy... I am 45 years old, working on an MBA, and I almost cried when Sal said what he did in that one minute... It was me in my student life... I have always said, "If I had internet, growing up, I would have been a doctor." Sal Khan is making that a reality for more than one "regular" kid.

  • MMM SALMON

  • I think this is why Rosetta Stone does so well. It teaches languages with this type of model.

  • he is amazing

  • Normally I find standing ovations in TED talks a bit cliche...but I feel this one was totally deserved.

  • call me crazy, but haven't we already seen this? In Star Trek.

I'm serious, what little we see of the education system there has video lectures and lots of student-teacher and student-student interaction.

  • @Isanion When you try a few of the lessons at Khan's site, AND get a "streak", then you can be sarcastic and judgemental... You are judging something you haven't even tried yourself... Like I said, try it and when you can get 10 questions in a row 'correct', (Trig, Calc, Physics, Chem, etc...) then come back and make your little smirky remarks.... ahem, lol

  • @DannyDad208 ok...

How was my comment a "little smirky remark"? Wtf does that even mean?

Are you somehow operating the the impression that I don't approve of this system? Do you consider comparing his academy to a system used in a fictional universe in which mankind has managed to eliminate greed, poverty, terrestrial war and are all super smart, high achievers who travel through space at super light speeds to be a bad thing?

  • @DannyDad208 also, since you value the pedestal so much, let me just point out that as the academy actually starts at the most basic level achieving a 'streak' at an unspecified level of advancement is hardly impressive.

However I still fail to see how someone managing to earn streaks in even the highest, most challenging subjects would in any way make them more qualified to comment upon a systems suitability to feature in a sci-fi tv series... unless they'd earned them in media studies... :P

  • This is change you can believe in.

  • 1:10 If this (Euler's identity) DOES NOT blow your mind, then you have NO EMOTION!!!

  • You are a great man salman khan, you helped me in university, you helped my brother in school and you helped my cousin who was always seen as dumb and now is the smartest in his class and is excited to learn more. thank you again

  • I LOVE this! What an awesome mechanism to improve the efficiency of educational tools. Would love to see the site become more community supported where people can post lessons/videos to assist with learning. Ultimately, it would also be great if people could create new knowledge trees and exercise branches. An open system like this would allow for the massive growth of content matter that would be needed to apply to all education. Obviously, this would require some form of moderation.

  • You are my hero!

  • sal is a MACHINE.

  • Just brilliant! Hats off to you sir

  • It's desperately needed in India. All people want to Go to colleges which don't have required number of teachers.

  • @shobhitmittal911 Video game driven technology can be used for virtual labs, project's like building a bridge.. ext

The connections between what they have learned can be connected to real applications of the knowledge.

I think MIT is doing some work on virtual labs.

  • @abram730 -

molecular lego to teach chemistry, someone must have done that by now.

stick a bit of instrumentation on a game like "the incredible machine" and you have physics/engineering.

sim games to teach sociology and economics..

good old fashioned book learning though will teach patience which is also important, we shouldn't lose books, and at school you learn the most important lesson that the rest of society is full of hostile competitors instead of your caring parents.

  • @walter0bz Fully functional tools, with class based lab experiments. They could also experiment on their own. Setting up tools for experiments is a job in itself. finding and entering material properties if you were to make a bridge as a project ext.

then have some fun with the project.

    watch?v=K2iPiK9jovo

I'm not talking about replacing structure, just engaging, accelerating learning and saving money. Competition via leader boards will help teach how the world works.

  • Watching Bill Gates makes me uncomfortable.

  • @physivic Why? Bill is a cool guy, and is different from other filthy rich people.

  • Why does Sal use shorthand notation at 5:43?

  • Who else is bothered by the guy in the crowd at 19:35 who gave a loud "ha!" after Sal said it could happen tomorrow?

  • @myne4 lol yeah i just heard that. what a dick.

  • @myne4 Damn cynics!

  • WOWWWW!!!!

That Idea of making "homework" in the classroom I had it for a long time... it makes so much sense. I dont need a teacher to grasp the main concepts, I can do that at home... But I need a teacher to apply those concepts!!!! SUBLIME!!!

  • What kind of stupid moron "Empty brain" idiot can dislike this?... there are 19 at this time!

  • excellent

  • i thought Salman Khan from bollywood is gonna talk.

  • I'm a 27 year old politics student. I've just got done, FINALLY with primary school mathematics. Well, three weeks ago... I'm hoping to get to college level stuff before I finish my degree.

  • Give it up for everybody loves raymond

  • @urmean26 This is a genius talk, but I actually laughed out loud at that

  • genius!

  • Awesome stuff!

  • Awesome stuff!

  • I totally agree with you - I think I can learn a lot better when watching an interactive video - learning when I want to, right what I need, being allowed to take a break when bored - rather than when I have to listen to a teacher for a given time, especially when I already grasp the subject and want to move on already!

  • As an English teacher, I am excited to see how Sal's website could benefit my classes. I disagree with many of the anti-education comments that I have seen on this video because I feel that learning requires human interactions with teachers. As Khan put it, this doesn't eliminate the need for teachers, but rather allows teachers to be better teachers.

I want to be extremely clear. I don't think this could ever REPLACE classroom learning, but could be a very good supplement.

  • 19 Wisconsin teachers voted down this video

  • beautiful... absolutely genius! KEEP ME INFORMED! --DJ Oxygen

  • Just in case you didn't leap forward to where this leads...

    1. We need FAR FEWER teachers, allowing us to find the best ones.

    2. We need FAR FEWER brick and mortar schools.

    3. We can experiment with FAR MORE learning / schooling models

    4. The school district, and the army of useless administrators can all be let go. We could cut admin down to 1% of what it is now.

CUT CUT CUT spending. We could reduce ed. spending by about 50% nationally, and get a FAR better result.

  • @IllinoisCitizen

    Stop this awful nonsense.
