I'm glad Jono Bacon came up with this. Many people need to understand that everyone has their own opinions and not everyone will entirely agree with them.
definitely a great vlog and website. all hate does is waste time and resources that could be better spent working together to make things better for all.
The OpenRespect statement, in terms of a grass roots political action movement seems like a romantic idea, but in the culture we live, being romantic means Roman, as in Byzantine. Culturally we have been engrained with values which will counter any progress which could be made by that statement. Hegemony for serfs! Sorry if that sounds glass half empty but it seems we are taught only to invoke respect/honor in the face of authority, force (ability) and as an investment tool for projected gain.
Niceeffort twds unification of Opensource people, thankfully there are alternatives to opensource software which is awesome, you don't have to choose a distro for software where you have multiple options;which enables better experience.
Finally,I want to see it as a unification against big trolls, M$,Apple but I don't want to feed them by creating hostility between open source people. As MS is trYing to hurt OPENOFFICE,I would like to see people standing against M$; that's how I want to see it.
i doubt it will make a difference... it actually sounds quite gay to me... i mean ... trolls will be trolls and the other people were already getting along ... i really don't see anyone changing their attitude fundamentally because a website tells them to
i mean every person on this earth deserves a basic amount of respect (just for being a human individual) that needs to be "maintained" but respect in a profession has to be owned.
to respect anyone at any cost is unrealistic. what Jono Bacon suggest is a "let's all be jolly and gay"-mentality when in reality the issues he talks about are more complex. if it was that easy we wouldn't have any wars. and no, "we" are not all on the same side.
I do believe with what you say. We are all in this open source community. Lets be nice to each other and treat each other with respect. I like the idea of Mr. Bacon's sites. We all are in this together. We all can contribute to make Linux a better distro for you and for every one. So try to understand what others want. Who knows we might fine some good ideas from them. I respect people for what they use. Even if they use windows. It doesn't matter what you use, the important thing here is repect
@TWILTalks FYI The OpenRespect link in the description has a comma at the end of the url, which breaks it.
I don't respect when somebody has an idea but gives little or no logical reasoning to back it up, but then says that's how it's going to be because they are in a position of power. In this situation they should expect everybody to criticize, not claim we are not showing respect.
That's part of the point of the site, is making sure that you have reasoning to back up whatever argument you participate in. That's where part of the openrespect decree falls apart, is with trolls...
I agree with the speculations for the roots of this projects, but beside its usable almost everywhere, where there exists more than a single worker... I'll be looking forward to this :) great idea. It misses translations though.
It doesn't hurt to set an example. Maybe some otherwise disrespectful individual will think twice before a unnecessarily attacking someone. I hope so... the junior high attitude displayed on many forums definitely stifles good participation. Thanks...
It's ridiculous, we shouldn't need a website to teach respect to adults.
Of course I support Jono Bacon 100%, and I understand why he's doing it, but it's so obvious that we shouldn't need this. *Especially* for an open source community.
