They're even closer than that. Most Germanic languages aren't that similar, for example, Swedish and Norwegian are Germanic and I can't understand them that well. Dutch and English come from a similar branch of the West Germanic family tree. The only language closer than Dutch to English is Frisian, unless you include Scots as a language (I do, however notice a lot of similarities between Scots and Frisian like the Scots laich and Frisian leech for low).
What's funny is that Dutch is so similar to English that I understood enough of it that I got some pretty good laughs out of it. Reminded me a little of the buffalaxing of Saint Seiya (Saint Sea Hat). Especially with all the mentions of Yogi.
