Yeah, haha --- filmed this way back when during early highschool years...but yes, I remember taking that shot five or six times, trying to get it right (five or six times is a lot when you're totally amateur).
I just used a colour matte from Final Cut Pro, blurred the edges, and then key-framed it over the letters of "The Last Samurai", and then overtop of that I used Live Type to create the title and then put it over top of the black-blob-colour-matte.
