Christianity IS hatred. The only difference is that christians engage in apologetics and create ways in which hate and bigotry is somehow forgiven.
The nicest people I know that identify as christian often have nothing more than an informal tie to christianity in their families - - meaning they identify only in name let common sense guide their lives.
I think we can blame the fact that gays make up a much larger percentage of clergy than their ratio in the general public. The pulpit spews what the people choose. Whatever topics generate the most revenue are most likely to be reiterated. What better way for a gay person to conceal it than to be an enthusiastic voice against it? Hence those sermon's would tend to be delivered more passionately, be more popular, and hence make the issue greater than scripture alone could explain.

I think we can blame the fact that gays make up a much larger percentage of clergy than their ratio in the general public. The pulpit spews what the people choose. Whatever topics generate the most revenue are most likely to be reiterated. What better way for a gay person to conceal it than to be an enthusiastic voice against it? Hence those sermon's would tend to be delivered more passionately, be more popular, and hence make the issue greater than scripture alone could explain.

It's not that the religious conservatives are allowed so much power, it's that they'll break an law--commit any crime to achieve their goals. Take a look at the Dover creationism trial--it's a veritable handbook of treachery and conspiracy by the most "upstanding" Christians in that community. Christians in American actually believe they are above the law--that it's for the little people because if you are in power, it's because god put you there and just wants results. Any means will do.
