I am willing to bet this guy does NOT play pan professionally. First of all his pan is a D pan and it has a MIDDLE C AND a high c. I know because I play D pan as well. And I absolutely DON'T LIKE when people refer to this instrument as a 'drum'. THE STEEL PAN IS NOT A DRUM!
And big up T&T for inventing this instrument but the country dropped the ball on the pan a long time ago...As a country it does little to promote and advance the pan..It's a shame because now Europeans are doing it.
Winston 'Spree' Simon has also been credited as the first to 'find' notes on a drum, as he beat it back into shape by the side of the road. They used to be convex, rather than concave. Spree was only 9 at the time, and his mate had mashed the pan down when playing. Many claim they were the first but 'spies' went from yard to yard and a great deal happened in a short time. This is documented online and makes fascinating & worthwhile reading. Ask Ellie about Spree, and Russ Henderson's input.

I can't believe there are morons who dare comment and say th steelpan was invented in Jamaica or whatnot, when they don't know what the hell they're talking about.............GOOGLE IT IDIOTS!!!! THE STEELPAN WAS INVENTED IN TRINIDAD!!!!!!!!! whoever told you otherwise has probably never used the internet.........
@godsangelfella aamm ok i am a trinidadian....n u all need 2 come trinidad 2 understand jamaicans can't play it shit as gud.heheheh come round carnival time!!!! den allyuh will never make the mistake and say it was invented in jamaica again!!!!!!

@hadeslovesgreenday Yes, the steel pan drum did originate in Trinidad. Music used to be outlawed there so the people would take a hammer and pound on steel drums like the ones that used to sit behind a house with garbage in them. The hammering slowly beat the shape of a pan. Then the people started to see how many different sounds they could get, that's what ingenuity can do. True story, look it up.
@shawdowman56 and I suppose you believe spaghetti was invented in Italy. I don't believe the pan was invented in WV or Jamaica. I believe it may have been perfected there, and turned into the instrument it is today, but I don't think it was invented in either of those places. I imagine the first pan drum was probably a dented garbage can.
Bagdiil must not be able to read fast enough to keep up with the spoken word.
The text is for people who may not be able to understand spoken English, but can read it. Also, many people who tune steel drums lose their hearing. The common word for the instrument is "steel drum." Those who play it and craft it, refer to the instrument as a "pan" as a shorthand to differentiate it from other percussive instruments that may be in the same band.
I've got an oil "pan" under my truck to hold my oil. How do you feel about that? A drum is a percussion instrument, exactly like the one in this video. It can properly be referred to as a pan or drum, both are correct.
Why do Americans have to call everything different? They were made from "oil DRUMS" now they are "steel PAN." I know a few international players who would get offended at having their instrument called a drum...
Forgive my confusing use of the English language, I was trying to convey, in too few words, that I was taught that the word "drum" in Trinidad refers to the raw state container for oil. As a sign of respect for the craftsmanship and cultural history that is inate in the finished article, once a drum has been transformed into this instrument with the voice of angels it is no longer refered to as a drum, but as a "pan." perhaps I am inheriting some overzelous destinctions which are in danger of

Do you know that the Tenor Pan was called "The Ping Pong " in the very early days of the Pan here in TnT. I heard the Late Great Winston Spree Simon another Pan Inventor from Trinidad say in an interview that they used to practice in the yard at the back of a Chinese Gentleman shop and when they did not win a pan competition then he remarked the next morning when he heard of the results the "Every night you beating Ping Pong , Ping Pong and now you not win". This sounds jokey but it's true.
Reply to bymster: The 2 note pan was called the "DuDup" and it was part of the rhythm section . It was replaced by the Congas aka Tumbas . The Dudup carried the required speed whilst the PingPong carried the Melody.
been playing tenor pan for years here in brooklyn ny during panaroma. he reminds me of the tenor section leader for pantonics steel orchestra brooklyn ny
It's typically anywhere from $800~1600 unpainted or raw steel, a little higher if you wanted painted, and for the chrome finish shown on this video it can go anywhere from $2200~3000 USD.
you can if you work for a school and your a music teacher. but you can't just go out and buy one. all steel pan drums are custom made. i know this because my music teacher knows ppl down in Trinidad and one of his good friends made pans for him and he know teaches in Ceres, CA. =P
