  • @rieg10 i am from jamaica and we use it a lot and most reggae have it in, it was invented in trinidad but it is used loads by jamaicans :)

  • woow i never heard this instrument before, it´s fucking awsomeeee!

  • Hey, just wondering... isn't the steel pan a jamaican instrument after all?

  • I HEARD THESE WERE INVENTED IN JAMAICA LOLOLOLO

  • I am willing to bet this guy does NOT play pan professionally. First of all his pan is a D pan and it has a MIDDLE C AND a high c. I know because I play D pan as well. And I absolutely DON'T LIKE when people refer to this instrument as a 'drum'. THE STEEL PAN IS NOT A DRUM!

And big up T&T for inventing this instrument but the country dropped the ball on the pan a long time ago...As a country it does little to promote and advance the pan..It's a shame because now Europeans are doing it.

  • @AManandHisPan Lighten up man!

  • I alway hear thus instrument being played in Nintendo Mario games!

  • Trinidad and Tobago we seh

  • This is not HOW to play, it is about the different voices of pan. Please label the videos as such. Thank you.

  • Winston 'Spree' Simon has also been credited as the first to 'find' notes on a drum, as he beat it back into shape by the side of the road. They used to be convex, rather than concave. Spree was only 9 at the time, and his mate had mashed the pan down when playing. Many claim they were the first but 'spies' went from yard to yard and a great deal happened in a short time. This is documented online and makes fascinating & worthwhile reading. Ask Ellie about Spree, and Russ Henderson's input.

  • @godsangelfella aamm ok i am a trinidadian living in trinidad....n u all need 2 come trinidad 2 understand jamaicans can't play it shit as gud.heheheh come round carnival time!!!! den allyuh will never make the mistake and say it was invented in jamaica again!!!!!! my humble opinion :)

  • @hadeslovesgreenday ye, i agree with you, i KNOW that trinidad invented them, but i always think jamaica invented them, i dont really know why

  • @rieg10 I think that too. I think its because its tropical music and the first thing we think of when we hear tropical music is Jamaica :D

  • @hadeslovesgreenday Well thank god for Jamaica, I don't know where we would be in this world if Jamaica hadn't invented the steelpan!

  • @hadeslovesgreenday Yes, the steel pan drum did originate in Trinidad. Music used to be outlawed there so the people would take a hammer and pound on steel drums like the ones that used to sit behind a house with garbage in them. The hammering slowly beat the shape of a pan. Then the people started to see how many different sounds they could get, that's what ingenuity can do. True story, look it up.

  • FUCK YOU EXPERT VILLAGE

  • i play steel pans

  • The guy who invented these lives in west virginia lol every one how says it comes from the jamica he was born and raised in WV

  • @shawdowman56 and I suppose you believe spaghetti was invented in Italy. I don't believe the pan was invented in WV or Jamaica. I believe it may have been perfected there, and turned into the instrument it is today, but I don't think it was invented in either of those places. I imagine the first pan drum was probably a dented garbage can.

  • @Ibber No actually Ellie Mannete invented the steel drum and he lives here in WV he has a shop here too. Im not shitting you dude.

  • fuck this

  • invented in trinidad and tobago

  • They have 138 thousand videos.

  • Thank you, this is amazing I didn't know anything about steel drums and you helped me understand them better :)

  • amazing sound can you telll me what kind of steel is?

  • Bagdiil must not be able to read fast enough to keep up with the spoken word.

The text is for people who may not be able to understand spoken English, but can read it. Also, many people who tune steel drums lose their hearing. The common word for the instrument is "steel drum." Those who play it and craft it, refer to the instrument as a "pan" as a shorthand to differentiate it from other percussive instruments that may be in the same band.

  • where's the video?

  • Remove the text dumbass

  • @bagdiil: i guess calling him "dumbass" didn't work, since the text is still there!

  • @bagdiil Just disable the captions, moron.

  • I've got an oil "pan" under my truck to hold my oil. How do you feel about that? A drum is a percussion instrument, exactly like the one in this video. It can properly be referred to as a pan or drum, both are correct.

  • Why do Americans have to call everything different? They were made from "oil DRUMS" now they are "steel PAN." I know a few international players who would get offended at having their instrument called a drum...

  • You seem to make a point then undermine it?

What am I missing? Do you think pan is the correct term? And if not, what do you think is?

  • Forgive my confusing use of the English language, I was trying to convey, in too few words, that I was taught that the word "drum" in Trinidad refers to the raw state container for oil. As a sign of respect for the craftsmanship and cultural history that is inate in the finished article, once a drum has been transformed into this instrument with the voice of angels it is no longer refered to as a drum, but as a "pan." perhaps I am inheriting some overzelous destinctions which are in danger of

  • turning into prejudices from too broad a base of players and tuners to warrant the formation of any unwritten constitution?

Pehaps you say tomatoe, I say tomatoe?

  • @thebymster

your a fuckin faggot dude, why cant you just enjoy the video

  • tell them to grow a pair and know america will wlays 'americanize' names of international things (futball to soccer for instance.) Not saying it's right but it will always be that way until the US falls

  • why do englishmen have to bitch about everything americans do?

  • where can u get these..i am interested in learning

  • i play the bace version of these

  • Do you know that the Tenor Pan was called "The Ping Pong " in the very early days of the Pan here in TnT. I heard the Late Great Winston Spree Simon another Pan Inventor from Trinidad say in an interview that they used to practice in the yard at the back of a Chinese Gentleman shop and when they did not win a pan competition then he remarked the next morning when he heard of the results the "Every night you beating Ping Pong , Ping Pong and now you not win". This sounds jokey but it's true.

  • Hey, I thought Ping Pong was the name of the first, two note pans, before Chromatic tuning. You still see them in Jouvert bands right?

  • Reply to bymster: The 2 note pan was called the "DuDup" and it was part of the rhythm section . It was replaced by the Congas aka Tumbas . The Dudup carried the required speed whilst the PingPong carried the Melody.

  • there is a drum like this but it is inverted and you play it on top... does anyone know what kind of drum that is
