John Jarratt (the actor who plays the serial killer) told an interviewer about a time when he went to watch the film in the cinemas. During one of the torture scenes, in which Jarrat's character has one of the girls tied up against a pole, one of the teenaged girls sitting in front of Jarratt turned around to avert her eyes from the horrors that were occurring onscreen. Jarratt told the interviewer that he stared the frightened teenager in the eyes and delivered his distinctive laugh! Poor girl.

Yeah, mate, you're spot on. There are probably more grizzly films out there, but what is so bad about this is the characters are very developed in the beginning so you really feel like you know them which makes it so much more disturbing when the horror starts. I really couldn't watch it much from then on, it just seemed too real, especially when you know it is based on a true story, that really made it worse for me.
