  • this is shit

  • Why the fuck would this be infamous??

  • Comment removed

  • This is great, but now I won't be able to listen to Alanis Morissette's music without giggling. lol

  • Love where he points out how the song "Irony" not having anything ironic in it was ironic in itself.

  • Legend

  • Isnt Alanis Moronic?

  • Watched this a few years ago and almost wet my self laughing. Seen Ed Byrne somewhere else and decided I really liked him. Looked the name up on YouTube to see some of his other sketches. Found this video and realised it was Ed Byrne... Thanks to the uploader, I absolutely love this video! ;)

  • @hebbaton Totally agree! I remember that I had to watch this a few times as I kept laughing so hard. Ed would have been a great English teacher... don'tcha think?

  • It's like 10.000 music critics when all you need is a comedian.

  • I get so sad when I look down at the comments and everyone's arguing...it's just supposed to be funny..not something to have a fit over

  • I was able to bear for 57 seconds, although i was bored shitless from 0:24 ...

  • @bxx3m I recommend increasing you attention span.

  • @navids20 I will try, but if this guy keeps this up, I`m afraid I won`t be so successfull ... Seriously now, I really could not find anything funny about this :(

  • @bxx3m well, everyone has a different sense of humor, I can't blame you.

  • This is strange coz I found this funny but Ive seen him in recent years and think hes crap.

  • Ok fine people of the world, question:

México City was built on a lake 500 years ago, and today its suffering from lack of water... is that ironic or not??

  • @ROCKINGJAGUAR Well... that's unfortunate! I would call it 'bad luck'.

  • What year was this?

  • I would argue that irony is quite a difficult concept to describe to someone who has no idea what it is.

  • It's finny because he's Irish.

  • You are genuinely a true Moron.

  • my dad told me to watch this when i was singing ironic

  • i bet ed byrne never anticipated how often he would be implemented in high school english classrooms

  • i am so sick of people thinking she wrote the song intentionally to "not be ironic" which "makes it ironic." you people are idiots, and so is alanis.

  • Calm your tits, feminist! It's a joke or do you not have a sense of humour. If you find this offensive, I pray you get off the internet quickly...

Now shush, get back in the kitchen and make some sammiches :) Thank you!

  • @QuackMooMeow I'm a girl and I always found this bit hilarious.

I bet this feminist was the one who got burned by Byrne at that show.

"I was wearing the clever trousers that day!"

  • Or should I say can't

  • It's ironic that you guys can see the funny side of this

  • @defter2002

what exactly is ironic about that...?

  • @PuckleberryFuinn86

Did you not listen to the video? That's not what irony is. If you think it is, then you're wrong. Period. It's definition is not subjective.

  • @Jzadek72 No i didn't. If i did it would be 5 minutes of my life i'd never get back.

  • @PuckleberryFuinn86

Yeah, but you'd learn the meaning of a word.

  • @Jzadek72 Nah, if i wanna know the meaning of the word i'd ask my English Teacher, get a dictonary or google it. I wouldn't watch a lame video from some has-been comedian.

  • @PuckleberryFuinn86

Then do that. Either way, you'll find out that the song isn't actually ironic. But in a less humorous fashion.

  • @PuckleberryFuinn86

You said. I'm not sure his aim is competition with some singer (who I admire, by the way, despite not actually liking her music per se) - his aim is make people laugh. And he's doing alright at that.

  • @Jzadek72 Well tbh i wouldn't know if he actally makes people laugh as i've not watched the vid. Out of intrest can i ask you why you admire her ?

  • @PuckleberryFuinn86

    Her feminism.

  • @Jzadek72 Eh cool :)

  • @PuckleberryFuinn86 Apologies, but Ed Byrne works primarily in Ireland and the UK and practises in 'humour' not 'humor'. Your English teacher appears to have taught you English (US), and therefore you do not understand 'humour'. I'd give your English teacher a slap as they have only introduced you to American culture, and your profile page reflects this.

  • @seismica I don't really care. I like American stuff and English stuff. Theres no law saying that i have to perfer the UK culture is there ? Oh and btw my English teacher is stupid, i'd happliy hit him but he's not taught me American Culture. I discovered it on my own via TV shows, music. Your not going to change that :P

  • @PuckleberryFuinn86 ed byrne is not english

  • @PuckleberryFuinn86

well, it doesn't really matter that you 'think' it's ironic, does it?

please check the meaning of the word, and then re-think what you said..

btw. he never says he thinks it's a bad song, it just isn't correct, but then hey, what song is?

  • @PuckleberryFuinn86 You clearly don't watch Mock the Week, do you? Now, stop complaining and enjoy the fucking comedy. Oh wait, you think comedy is glee (as you're username is very glee-ish). Now, go back into the kitchen and await further orders. Bitch.

  • 248 people didn't know what Irony was either

  • If nothing in the song is ironic, isn't it the most ironic song of all?

  • What's more hilarious is where is this guy now? lol

  • Comment removed

  • @GuitarSlinger26 YOu can find him sometimes on Mock the Week.

  • @GuitarSlinger26 He's made three DVDs and has had multiple successful tours. He's also noted as being one of the top comedians in the UK right now. Isn't that ironic?

  • @JohnyH no, it's not ironic. Other than that, your point is a good one.

  • @retsilagnilooc I know, the person was clearly an Alanis Morissette fan.

  • 247 people are from high wycombe

  • the irony (no pun intended)? The first lyric of the chous is also a simile!

  • ahahahaha he knife thing had me in stitches! ... ironically :L

  • Isn't it a little like coppery and zincy?

  • @Metaldude1945 That's sarcasm you've described.

  • @estebanrey No, look up irony on wikipedia and read the very first paragraph :P Irony and Sarcasm are very often mistaken.

  • @Metaldude1945 Sorry but that is sarcasm and they are often mistaken but irony is just like Ed said in the video with the traffic jams, the guy was going to a meeting to solve traffic jams but was late because he was in a traffic jam, that is irony. Sarcasm would be if the man in the traffic jam said, "These traffic jams are awesome! I'm glad they don't make me late!" However, the man isn't glad about it, that would be sarcasm.

  • @stembarer But the man stuck in the traffic jam, is saying he is glad that he won't be late. But he is going to. So that is irony. Well, at least, that's what i learned in the class of languages : /

  • @Metaldude1945 The thing that makes it sarcastic and not ironic is that he does not actually mean is he glad, he is saying he is glad in a sarcastic way

  • @estebanrey Also known as verbal irony.

  • Actually Irony is saying something you when you mean the opposite. :P And no, i don't like alanis morisette :p

  • @Metaldude1945 It's not quite as clear cut as that though.

  • @Metaldude1945 That would be sarcasm, actually. While sarcasm often dwells in the realm of irony there is a difference.

  • Ed Byrne's 'Irony' skit is a bona-fide classic. And I don't mean that ironically, Alanis.

  • What do you need that knife for? To stab the bastard that keeps leaving all the spoons around your house? :D

  • How big is your sink, Alanis, really?!

  • Very funny indeed. But 'similay'? someone could have really punctured his ego by shouting out 'it's simile!' at the end.

  • @Batters56 That's how its pronounced.

  • @Redstar226 Nah you search simile on youtube. I couldn't find one person who pronounced it so strongly as 'lay'at the end.

  • @Batters56 Well certainly that's how I've always heard it pronounced in Ireland and Britain.

  • @Batters56 *headdesk* In different parts of the world, sometimes, things are pronounced differently >.<

  • Me and my mate saw him live a lil while back.. he's brilliant :D

  • how big is your sink Alanis.

  • My english teacher told me to watch this when I tried to be all smart and told him I knew what ironic means because I listened to Alanis Morissette...

  • @Xx7015xX i looove ur english teacher :D

  • Congratulations, your video made it into today's The5Daily playlist.

  • Is it just me or does his face remind you of David Tennant's...?

  • How do you have a 'single' from an album?

  • @TheNithal Tracks are called singles when released alone.

  • @TheNithal It's released as a single, but originally came off the album.

  • alanis is a caterwauling horse face

  • the only time he's made me laugh.. EVER

  • Brilliant. I hope there's a lot of people going to the video for the song Ironic and quoting these jokes.

  • I studied English most of my life!!... And I only know the difference between a metaphor and a simile thanks to Mr Byrne

  • here's alanis morissette with her new single, 'dhtahh,' taken from her new album, 'hmmmmmm'

    damn. i love him.

  • Ed is as funny as AIDS

  • @shaung He's only funny when applied to people I don't like?

  • @bluetane Alanis will be well upset you don't like her. Mopping her tears up with the cash she made from this record no doubt.

  • @shaung How ironic!:))

  • @shaung which is hilarious!!! :D

  • yep seriously sanfranchick, dont call an irish person english... i mean fer fuk sake

  • @MrCeltic1888 I wasnt calling him English.... I meant he was an english language nerd! I wouldnt dare call an irish person english! =P

  • @Sanfranchick he's Irish...

  • @EpiclyConnor Sanfran meant the language of English, not the nationality.

  • @EpiclyConnor oh I know.... I meant the english language.... I stupidly put a capital there! =D

  • "nooooooooo..... because she said it's "like 10,000 spoons"..... which makes it a simile!!" FUNNIEST LINE EVER!!! such an English nerd.... and I love him for it!!

  • @sanfranchick cause hes english isnt he silly american whore !!

  • @shaneac9 he's from the Republic of Ireland, he isn't English, he's Irish

  • Comment removed

  • @shaneac9 he's Irish!! not English!

  • I'm pretty sure every other comedian in the world were kicking themselves for not thinking of doing a joke on this song..... it seems like such an obvious joke after Ed Byrne says it!..... everyone knows the song isnt ironic..... but only Ed seemed to use this to his advantage!!

  • My God this man is sexy...

  • i love Ironic, and Alanis Morissette but he's right :L so funny

  • this is fuckin awesome

  • LOVE HIM. ' I was in a fierce ironic traffic jam yesterday'. Such an irish way to qoute things.

  • One eds many fantastic jokes. This guy is underrated and underexposed.

  • he got a lot of mileage out of this one, saw him use it in Australia a few times. love it!

  • YEAH MUN!:D

  • the most misused word in the english language is ironic, isnt that ironic?

  • @seanlenoble9 No, it's just unfortunate.

  • @seanlenoble9 What would be ironic is if 'misused' was the most misused word in the English language.

  • It's quite simple. She's Canadian. Everyone and everything (except the weather) is so pleasant up there that they have a very low and rather confused bar for irony. Nothing to sharpen up the shadenfreudic distinctions like the travails that the Irish have faced for centuries.

  • @Scandibilly no that's just a bad career choice. The fun part is he IS funny. :/

  • seen this many times funny as %uck

  • The most ironic thing is that a person would make a song about irony yet not know the meaning of such word.

  • "...which means it's a simile" epic win.

  • @BlindMarine eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeepic!!!

  • @BlindMarine This was awesome (only problem is a simile is a type of metaphor)

  • @Patches0693

Not to sound anal/pedantic, but while similes and metaphors are similar, a simile compares one thing to another, and a metaphor says one thing IS another thing.

  • @BlindMarine That is true but if you look in a grammar book, you should find that a simile is a type of metaphor (I was reeeealy bored one day and decided to look it up).

  • 229 people don't understand irony

  • he's right, the woman really doesn't know the difference between irony and bad luck, whatever alanis fans might say to defend her.

  • @xxcdemon08 more than that, have you seen some of the comments people wrote?

Also, @kazywaz what you're saying is implying it's OK to make fun of men, but if you make fun of women it's barbaric

  • I saw this clip a few years back and to this day whenever i hear the song all i can think about is how not ironic the things it mentions really are :)

  • i laughed at 0:03!

  • This is sooo true

  • he's mad funny, takes the piss without being offensive, and his hair's mad!!!

  • I had to hear the song afterwords

  • @Odinz123 *afterwards

  • I love the song, and I love Alanis but good lord, this is HILARIOUS!!! I LOVE ED BYRNE!!!

Even women want equal rights, they should be able to laugh at themselves, disregard who makes fun of them :)

p/s: I'm a woman and yes we exist on the internet, but don't worry, me computer is in the kitchen and I'll have ya sammich done in a lil ;)

  • @QuackMooMeow Hurry it up woman! Getting hungry over here!

  • @QuackMooMeow

could you get me a beer with my sandwich? There at the bottom of the fridge.

  • @QuackMooMeow You are everything I hate about the internet

  • This whole 5 mintues is utterly brillant! he made a career of this because the rest of his material - base.

  • saw him last night he was brilliant :)

  • I'm going to see him on 20th April XD

  • You could just about get away with calling "a death row pardon two minutes too late" an example of irony. Apart from that he's right. Feck all irony in the bastard!

  • @cuntylishus Again, that's just very unfortunate. It would be ironic if the execution had been carried out by the time on the prisoner's watch, which had always been set two minutes fast because he hated being late for things.

  • I don't think people with that hair should throw stones

  • TTAAUGH

  • The song itself is situational irony at least. Many expected her song to have examples of irony, but when it was released, there wasn't a single example of irony . This is an “incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs"

  • @CoolerKing37 How does knowing it's not meant to be ironic make it any less funny? It's just a joke for fuck's sake, don't go wasting your time researching it all.

  • @iizgangstajesus Then this would have to be the laziest, most unoriginal joke ever. I can't wait to hear his next bit about how Iceland is green and Greenland is icey!

  • @CoolerKing37 HAHA! That would be HILARIOUS! I love you for that.

  • @CoolerKing37 And also, don't take the fuck personally. Words like that entertain me. And incase the last comment didn't send, thanks for this laugh.

  • @iizgangstajesus Not suprising my comment is funnier than this shit stand-up act...
