  • 'He makes you glad your mom and dad took the time to conceive you.' ...that he does.

  • There are but a few artists who when you see them perform touch something elemental in you -- make you happy you're alive!

Louie Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Luciano Pavarotti, and of course, Jimmy Cagney.

He makes you glad your mom & dad took the time to conceive you. So full of life, so full of piss & vingear. ... A great guy, a true artist. ... Impossible not to like.

Thank you to whomever posted this video -- great job of synching the music to Jimmy's every irresisitble move!

  • Loved this! Mr. Cagney saw himself as a "hoofer" as well. Mr. Cagney the epitome of a man with grace, elegance and yet a "tough guy". He did it all. Glad we have these clips so a new generation can appreciate him.

  • From now on when i hear this song, I will picture James Cagney.

  • What great film! He was the master

  • this is so awful uits brilliant!

  • Great video well done!.Anyone who thinks he could only play crazy gangsters needs to check out his musicals,Jimmy had a whole other talent too.Great music choice aswell thanks for posting.

  • Never gets old like jim never really did at heart

  • I think that James Cagney was multi talented, he could sing, dance and act. But I wish there was a clip of James Cagney and Alan Hale when James was dancing and James belted Alan one, I seen that you had this in the clip, but I was hoping that someone had uploaded this particular video clip alone. Thanks enjoyed the video clip.

  • Oh man, this is SO CLASSIC. I wish TCM could use it for a promo, it is THAT GOOD.

  • I think this is one of the best videos on Youtube! I've lost count of how many times I've watched it through the years. I am probably responsible for at least 25 percent of the views, lol.

Thanks so much for putting this together!

  • Again, another AWESOME song. And I'm only 13! 80s FTW

  • A masterpiece!

  • Love this video, can't stop playing it! Dude was a fantastic dancer!

  • Video beautifully synchronized! O what fun! fab clips. You circumspectly captured JC's quintessence, in representative epitomes. Bravissimo!

  • Great editing! Love Cagney dancing! And as far as the naysayers are concerned , Screw em! This is great!

  • Fine work here of a master toe stepping dancer, actor, comedian, and patriot...if we can keep turning out talent like this from this nation of ours...the US is sure to be a long running enterprise. Bravo to you and James Cagney.

  • Great job - you did the transitions really - particularly on the spins - loved it!

  • Fantastic video, thank you for posting - he has been one of my favourites since I was about 12, it is nice to know other people still appreciate him.

  • Fantastic video, thank you for posting - he has been one of my favourites since I was about 12

  • I totally enjoyed it -especially seeing Doris Day during her mention. Great job!

  • @deucesinger

I really wish I understood what you are getting at.

  • @deucesinger Your critique is incoherent "word salad" and pointlessly offensive, ex.: profane.

  • @deucesinger This was not made for you. You weren't mislead, you misread. You read too much into a title.

  • Ooh what - thank you so much for putting this clip together. Its a quite brilliant integration of yesterday and today (but, of course, would be nothing at all without Cagney)

  • Will I ever tire of watching this? Hmmmm.....NOPE, don't think so!

  • This is excellent! Thanks for paying tribute to one of the dancing greats.

  • GREAT job!

  • This has to be one of the greatest video's on you tube. It contains one of the greatest good time songs of the '80s, it contains the greatest editing that I have ever seen on a youtube video and while we're on the subject of greatest, Cagney was the very very best. well done you.

  • Been watching Cagney all night and now it's dawn and I find this! Perfect. The song bangs in my head but the moves are just what I wanted to see.

    A really decent Tribute.

  • kudos Mel! Awesome!!!!!

  • What's the film at 0:23 ?

  • @WeirdThing

    "Boy Meets Girl"

  • @igvmyslf1000pts Thank you so much! Love your Cagney videos! :D

  • Love it! I don't suppose you could do something like this for Bob Hope could you? I would be so overjoyed if you did! :)

  • This is really great. I loved it.

  • Cagney is forever, Wham is not!

  • This was absolutely wonderful! And, amazingly, this song really does go well with the clips; don't know why, I just know that it really truely does work. I really like James Cagney, sadly I haven't seen very many of his movies, but because I saw this, I'm really going to make sure that I see more of his movies. Wonderful job.

    Happy Thoughts, ~ R.C.

  • I Love this Song. Verry good! :)

  • Melanie, I come back to this video time after time. 20 years ago, I dated a nice girl and we watched all the Cagney films together, but alas, life moved us on. Now, although we live 1000's of miles apart, we write each other frequently via email. For her birthday present, I sent her the link to this clip. Than you so much for putting it together. Your friend always, the Tinman.

  • Fantastic! :)

I know a thing or two about editing, so I know how much time, attention and good ear went into this.

You should be doing this for a living.

    (Maybe you are? :))

  • OH, my ! This is great. No one moves quite like Cagney. Your tribute is wonderfully put together. Thanks!

  • That was fantastic, thanks, Doris Day indeed, brilliant.

  • Great stuff! There are some really nice cuts in there.

  • Awesome...it somehow seems like if this song was out back then, he would have danced to it.

  • Very nicely done! The timeing is perfect and there are some great clips in here. How do you not love James cagney?!? :D

  • GEEEZ MELANIE , What can I say that has'nt been said ( well perhaps what dezfourtytwo said 2 months ago " If you aren't a pro, you should be...."). In your own right you're a pro like Cagney. It's almost 2am, and this tribute has me bouncing aroud. KUDOS Kiddo!

  • Love this video - BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!

  • What happened to the great talents that could do it all? Have they REALLY been replaced by special effects, crappy actors and empty plots? People in my generation don't know what talent is!!! and it angers me that they wont even watch something before their birth year...they dont know what they are missing :(

  • I'm so glad it's back up!!!

  • Very nice Video, Melanie!!!

    Greetings Andi

  • James Cagney forever!!!!!!

  • Cagney was one of a kind. A great actor, dancer, and a true gentleman. They don't make 'em like that anymore. Wonderful video montage - thanks for posting.

  • Who was the gal he was dancing with beginning at 2:31 (and what movie did that segment come from?) They both coordinate each others' eye and body movements beautifully. I keep coming back to that section and watching it again.

  • @NingPoHo

That's actually Cagney's REAL-LIFE sister, Jeanne, playing his onscreen sister in Yankee Doodle Dandy! :) They must have that unspoken sibling connection.

  • Less is more? I don't think so . In Jimmy's case more is more. It's not overacting it's entertainment!

  • Like a little piece of thistledown...truly one of the Greatest Dancers...

    Thanks for a fun video

  • Watched again and shared. Told all to LIKE pointing out what fabulous perfect timing you've done! If you aren't a pro, you should be! Appreciate how much time you must have put into it!

  • WELL DONE!!!!

  • This is fabulous Melanie - I was looking for Cagney clips on You Tube and stumbled on this. On the 2nd viewing I saw where you put the Doris Day film clip in when WHAM sings Doris Day - EXPERT job on editing! Thanks also for including part of "Something to Sing About." Cagney opening number in that is to die for. Thank you for showing that he was first and foremost a hoofer and not just the actor who played a gangster. he did everything well and I loved him!

  • @theroone

Thank you oh so very much! :] Your nice words are highly appreciated and it makes it all worth while to know it put such a smile on your face. I could be wrong, as my memory is fuzzy, but I think you might be the first one to have mentioned the Doris Day part, hehe. I was WONDERING when someone would! :P

    Take care,

    Mel

  • @igvmyslf1000pts Dear Mel--I have saved this video to my favorites and when I wish to make someoe else happy I forward it to them. This really is pure genious. It's better than an old worn out shoe that you just won't get rid of cause it fits so well... Just really, really awesome...Thank you

  • @theroone Ditto! This is a show stopper. I was flipping too. I'll keep looking but I watched this one twice. Then I'll look for Fred A.

  • Haha all the dances fit this tune. Perfect!

  • big fan of the late james cagney n well impressed with what ya done here made me laugh which is a good thing to do thanks a million for posting

  • My name is Velosmuer. I am from the planet Fismis. In our view all human deaths are quite acceptable. That is except for the demise of James Cagney. We concur that his expiration is unendurable. We shall bring him back on December 16, 2010. Be prepared. He will be youngish and fit. Once his disorientation is resolved, he will be a force to be reckoned with. But fret not. You shall all be greatly gratified, except perhaps for some bigots whom hate the Irish.

  • Nicely done. Thanks for your hard work. Time to head to Scarecrow Video and pick up some Cagney films!

  • I love James Cagney

  • @cutiepotatoes92 I really don't think there's anyone who doesn't love him!:)

  • Kudos for a great tribute. It shows off Jimmy's wonderful talent.

They just don't make 'em like him any more.

  • This is brilliant! Wow!!!!

  • Never really liked Cagney that much.....he was always punching people......

    Just kidding....always loved Jimbo...

    How could ya not....

  • I recognize the scenes from Yankee Doodle Dandy. What are some of the other movies clips are taken from?

  • @blbeachgoer

All the movies I used clips from are listed in the video description.

  • BRILLIANT! Wonderful!!!!!

Jimmy was a grand dancer--and a he-man! Thank you for such fun!!!!! I LOVE this! Ohhhhhh...Thanks!! Great Satire and Great use of Jimmy's best dance scenes!

  • Very good!!! Thank you!

  • this is absolutely fantastic!! i love it! here's to Cagney....well done!!!

  • Wow! Very impressive editing. I love it! I think Jimmy's signature move would be his marrionette on a string styling. I still don't think he's ever been beat for the lightness of his footing. Your choice of song was perfect for this. Thanks. This was a treat to watch.

  • That Cagney fella - he had a dancing style all his own! This is way cool!

  • The happy side of Cagney..... people just remember the thug..... Thanks!

  • Nice timing on the bang bang bang. Can't get any better than that.....

  • Agree this is a perfect 10. I simply adore and often watch it as it's so charming, fun and respectful. It never fails to bring a big smile to my face! You're very creative and talented.:) Thank you!

  • Very well-done! Good job! That Cagney fella was incredible!

  • Love Jimmys "stiff legged" style of tapping.....it is totally unique compared to any other tappers - male or female - I've seen....yet comes across so smoothly effortless.

This clip & editing is A TREAT !!

  • @woody7075 Perhaps his tap roots same as Irish Riverdancing.

To paraphrase Mother G, Cag be nimble, Cag be quik! Like Astaire or Kelly on speed, and with helium in their veins.

  • @JudgeJulieLit .......appreciate your take as "having Irish dancing roots"....and also The Mimeres observation of "marionette on a string" style.....I think that nails it!!!

  • A perfect 10. An absolutely AMAZING job.

  • Tough to say....the old dude dances better than MJ.

  • most excellent editing!

    superb montage!

  • igv,

I can't begin to tell you how much joy this video, (through you) has brought me. I can't tell you how many times I've watched it. Every time is a joy! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

  • This was a very good video.. I really enjoyed it.. Thanks for posting..

  • Your an Asshole in the first degree philfoote. Your comment is not worth responding to but the ignorance of it compels one to let you know your a Dickhead. This video is awesome!

  • Well, that was really good !! Me and my 8 year old son Conor sat here and enjoyed that...The music ...well,,it fitted great !

  • absolutley fabulous!!! I loved it!! Thanks for making this!

  • oh good choice of music.

    vomit !

  • Great!

  • Well done, the music fits surprisingly well with Cagney's dancing. Thanks for posting. Also, could you please give me the name of the film featuring Jimmy kicking the piano, as seen in this video? Thanks. James Cagney is a timeless performer.

  • @matthewcgreen

It is called "West Point Story".

  • @igvmyslf1000pts Great!

  • Great job igvmyslf!

  • What a lot of fun! Please ignore the grumpus. Your time spent putting this together is appreciated!

  • Wow....this is fantastic!!

    Thanks for sharing!! :)

  • Great job! two thumbs up!!!

  • That man could do it all......wish there were more like him around these days

  • @phillfoote

Don't make assumptions about my intentions in making this or my decision to use this song choice. It was to be taken as a light-hearted joke. Sorry if it wasn't your cup of tea, but I didn't make this to cater to your tastes. I made it because I am a video editer. And yes, thank you, I DO think I am clever for it. What creations do you have to show for YOURself?

  • @phillfoote is a stuffy, humourless fool.......your tribute to Jimmy C via this method and this song is excellent. Don't worry about his comment......all the rest of us posters realise he just doesn't get it!!

  • @woody7075

Thanks. :] Yeah, I try not to let remarks like that get to me. Some things just go way over people's heads I guess. :-P It's okay though. We forgive him... -pats Phillfoote on the head-.

  • A great vid of my all time favorite actor the Great James Cagney. Thanks for all of your videos of films best actors!

  • A good cup of coffee and this video. What a way to start the day. I have admired Mr. Cagney from the start and having this to watch anytime I want (which will be often) is great. Good work!

  • I bet the man himself would love this video, and I know I do!

  • thats right people! only Irish/Norwegians can be that great of dancers! :D luv you Cagney!

  • Melanie - your stuff is utterly wonderful. Cagney is my all time favourite and to see these wonderful clips of yours is just great. Thanks for all the hard work and keep it up!

  • Thanks for the great video! Lots to love about his dancing! Yes, the arm in the air twirl (almost as if he's twirling a lasso) could be a signature move. Love the bobbing head! And the illusion of magic shoes -- his feet appear to have a will of their own( which seems to both surprise and amuse him!).

  • This is really wonderful, and was edited perfectly. Great job! <3

  • i am speechless! this is fantastic, wonderful and totally perfect ! thanks...i did knot that jimmy could dance, but i was NOT aware that he had such a lot possibilities to do it. and by the way... his gue was gooooooooooodddddd... eva

  • OMG, this put such a big smile on my face! Excellent, right down to the "Doris Day" part.

    THANK YOU!!!!

  • Pretty creative, thanks

  • the one armed spin that jimmy does in some routines is his dancing trademark as far as im concerned..

  • Please excuse my bad spelling. I was trying to watch your video and send you a message at the same . I didn't spellcheck. lol

  • This is absolutely wonderful!

  • OH YEAH!!!!!! This is GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!

  • That was great! I particularily loved the part where he spins in one clip and it flows into another spin from a different movie. It was so seamless that you can't see the division. Brilliant!

  • One of the best clips I've ever seen. And the music with it suits it brilliantly! Cagney rocks & so does Melanie!!! Melanie will go far!!!!!

  • LOVED this! Really well edited!

  • wonderful video i remember these from when i was a kid goingto the local movie house all day on Saturday.

  • What movie is that last "roaring drunk" part from?

Fantastic video! I've been enjoying all of them lately and you have wonderful timing in them all. :)

  • That's from "Boy Meets Girl"

  • Wonderful!!! Great idea! Thanks and kisses from Athens-Greece!

  • what films were these clips from im a cagney fan would love to see his dancing films.Fred astaire said cagney was the best hoofer in hollywood

  • All the movies that the clips were from are listed in the video description. If there's a specific clip that you want to know where it's from, I'll need to know which part of the video it's in.

  • Weird but amusing! Great clips.

  • wow! great job

  • wow... it really deserves a full watch. some of the timing in ticklish. nice work.
