Having the simple majority in Congress doesn't put a party in power. The way I understand it: a party needs at least a 2/3 majority in both houses to override a presidential veto. Not to mention all the procedures which congressional minorities can use like filibusters and even the committee structure itself... Its all part of the slow deliberate process of checks n balances in representative democracy.

Maybe you should re-read your Amer. Gov't textbook before voting this Nov.?
