Mary is alive and well in Heaven. God gives the Saints the power to help those Christians who are still on Earth by allowing them to pray for us. The Pope wasn't praying to the statue itself but used it as an instrument to direct his mind to Mary. Mary's prayers saved His life. Stop trying to deify Mary.
