A parent may teach a child that something is wrong, but pressure from their peers can lead a child to make bad decisions. I usually agree with TAA, but not in this instance. Where I'm from, (Canada), a 17 year old is still a minor/child, and I don't agree with depicting children in sexual situations. A child's brain is underdeveloped, and continues to grow up until the early 20s. It's at that age that the part of the brain that recognizes consequences is fully matured. Little girls are getting their periods as young as 8. A third grader is not mature enough to make that kind of decision for themselves. Those laws are there to make sure that parents are held accountable for what their children do.

The parents make the guidelines, but the children choose if they wish to follow them. The parents should be warning children of the consequences of course, but the ultimate decision is up to the child. Parents cannot always stop these types of things when they don't even know that it's happening, and that's not always the fault of careless parenting.

You may have had good parents but, there are so many bad ones out there that don't teach kids right from wrong, lead from bad example, and abuse their kids. The laws are there to protect children from those who would take advantage of them, and also to hold parents accountable for, not only the children's actions, but the actions of the parents, which may lead to harm to children.

The parents should be warning children of the consequences of course, but the ultimate decision is up to the child. @mooniekate It is legal for a 17 year old to have sex and be sexual, as long as it is not with someone who is older (within 4 years older in most states, after you turn 16). MTV is retarded, but it is sadly just showing a version of reality- the reality of stupid people. I was having sex long before I was 17. I don't see the problem with 16 and seventeen years old teenagers having sex...as long as they have enough braincells to use protection.

@elnoraemily The law is pretty much the same here in Ontario. Once you turn 18, (or 19, or 21, depending on where you live), you become an adult. You're supposed to stop having sex with younger people. A lot of teenagers don't have the brain cells to use protection, and that's how 16 and pregnant came about. The reply that you're replying to was to the notion that there shouldn't be any laws and the final decisions are up to the child, which I completely disagree with.
