@RolfLarsson He steals the children of Hamlin when the officials refuse to pay him for his services in removing all the rats. That's why we have the expression "paying the piper".
This movie has a slightly different ending though.
DuMonts last broadcast was September 23, 1956, a boxing match. I agree, though, I don't think they ever broadcast in color. The network was perpetually strapped for cash and only existed to sell DuMont tv sets.
With that said, I certainly enjoyed this movie. Prestige! :D

I remember watching this "movie" on TV when I was a little girl. It was definitely in color. But I do not remember Dumont.
