they are arguing in the forums if wheter or not the pencils shud be included, in my opinion, not only the pencils should be included, but the organ music in Zig Zag speech, with is better than that ''Arabian'' feel music that plays in the beggining of the flyover.
I listened to the commentary on the Recobbled Cut DVD and the guys said they preferred this version better too, since it gave away the destination (the battle) and took away the mystery of the span over the mountains. I think they chose the spliced version b/c of the picture resolution.
@ohmss006 Ask Garrett Gilchrist, I'm sure he knows where it can be found... he can be found at the forum of his Orange Cow website, if I'm not mistaken.
I must admit that OgOggilby's version of this particular scene is better than the recobbled one (btw it's in part 3, not 5). Than makes me even more puzzled. Will we ever see the finished version? and who'll say it's the final one?
HOMIGOD. I remember seeing this when I was a little girl and I never forgot. I waited everyday for it to come back on that channel so I could record it. It never did, but a few years later I saw it again and I was happeh <3.
Check out the forums on ffrevolution dot com; some people have painstakingly reconstructed the film to what it was originally meant to be (something like 30 minutes of footage were cut from the version which was released, not to mention horrible editing in general). Actually, there should be a new version of the restoration within a few months.
When I saw this movie, I was stunned it wasn't done with a computer. Even the landscapes and the 'flyaround' on very complex scenes. Today, a computer would be used, perhaps to animate the entire thing likely without any 'cel-painting'. Still, it's amazing.
So there is another remake/restoration from the original workprint? I'll try to find it and look into it, since I see it's already been "taken care of" on Youtube.
In this case, the widescreen shows the entire image. If you see it in fullscreen, the sides are chopped up. However, that's because this movie was filmed in CinemaScope (well, Panavision), which means it's not cropped on the top and bottom to create a widescreen image. What you see is what you get.
I think that tygerbug's version is more "watchable" since the cuts back and forth can be a little jarring. I just edited this to show what's missing from what's in the release version.

Amazing !
You should repost it with a better resolution for picture though, now YouTube allows HD.

This scene was beautiful, but why wasn't it added in the "Recobbled Cut"?

Garrett (the creator of that cut) felt that the switching back & forth between pencils and "finished" animation would be too distracting.

In my opinion the images of the One-eyes are more distracting...

What's the music that plays when the camera pans through the mountains? It's so menacing yet awesome.

I like the original version better, that way it doesn't seem like a dream, as in the reedited versions.

it must've been tough, but it looked awesome. It's sad that this animation is kind of dying.

You know, sometimes widescreen hides more than fullscreen.
