Saw him at a local university in 1982...the BEST concert of my life. Maynard was and is my hero. The greatest trumpet sound imaginable and what a passion he had for performing. I still aspire to play and sound like him. Thanks Maynard. :o)
The Big Band I was in at school played this and I completely agree with the below comments... until you get it tight. It's a VERY fun song to play as a drummer!
Maynard was quite the showman! Incredible chops. This is the old Ontario Place Forum in Toronto. The revolving stage was great venue for just about every major touring show in the 70s and 80s. The admission to the concerts was free with admission to the park ($4 in the 70s, I think). I spent many hours "camped" there with my buddies in order to secure the best seats. We were probably at this show!
so fucking true last year our jazz band played it and i swear i was gonna kill it in the face, now i want to arrange it myself XD with the awesome trumpet solo
Most likely lineup: Migliore, Traub and Maina on saxes; Nick Lane & Ken Crane on T'bones; Stan Mark, Rusty Barker, Mike Horbal & Alan Wise on T'pts; Lou Carfa (b), Mike Rizzo(gt), David Ramsay (p) & Roberto Petaccia (d). THIS IS MY FAVORITE VERSION OF BIRDLAND, Maynard's from the "Carnival" Album.
The second man from the left small guy with "afro" hair is Stan Mark (lead of the section at that time)... I don't reconize the others (perhaps Noday, Mosello & Tooley).
This is the first video I've seen of the late Roberto Petaccia. He had the goods.

I was fortunate enough to see Maynard a few years back before he passed. What a legend! His band was as tight as this recording.

Everything about this is amazing. The song, the band, the rhythms are so complex, and it's all so rockin'. I love it

I took jazz guitar lessons from Lou Carfa in Arlington Texas when I was a kid in high school in the late 80's. I learned so much from him.

Another great version of this wonderful tune...Maynard you will sorely missed. Eric is the man on sax...yeah...

My guess is that this performance was recorded in 1982. Am I right?
panchopistolas22 4 years ago
I believe that the date was in late May 1980. Some of these great musicians were no longer with the band in 1982.
