  • This is the first video I've seen of the late Roberto Petaccia. He had the goods.

  • very good! but im sorry the one on the mike douglas show is better to me... thank you for all of ur videos brian!

  • definitely the best version of this song!

  • Saw him at a local university in 1982...the BEST concert of my life. Maynard was and is my hero. The greatest trumpet sound imaginable and what a passion he had for performing. I still aspire to play and sound like him. Thanks Maynard. :o)

  • Saw him at Ontario Place 1980ish and I gave both my nuts! What a showman and musician.

  • Is it just me or does the bassist look like freddy mercury?

  • If I get to wear shirts like THAT, I wanna be in HIS band ! ! !

  • If I get to wear shirts like THAT, I wanna be in HIS band ! ! !

  • The Big Band I was in at school played this and I completely agree with the below comments... until you get it tight. It's a VERY fun song to play as a drummer!

  • this guys my trumpeting hero *eye shimmer*

  • Wow holy freeking cow..what a performance....MF...always rocked the house and I'm sure he is blowing the roof off of places in the afterlife.

  • MF rocks the heaven :D

  • Maynard was quite the showman! Incredible chops. This is the old Ontario Place Forum in Toronto. The revolving stage was great venue for just about every major touring show in the 70s and 80s. The admission to the concerts was free with admission to the park ($4 in the 70s, I think). I spent many hours "camped" there with my buddies in order to secure the best seats. We were probably at this show!

  • @jchrissnow Me too...takes me back. We took picnic lunches.

  • I was fortunate enough to see Maynard a few years back before he passed. What a legend! His band was as tight as this recording.

  • Eric Traub is a great tenor player...and is still doing it down New Orleans way..

  • NEVER EVER EVER EVER play the concert band arrangement for birdland it sucks the big one

  • so fucking true last year our jazz band played it and i swear i was gonna kill it in the face, now i want to arrange it myself XD with the awesome trumpet solo

  • I agree we played it two years ago and it sucked

  • long live Maynard!

  • I'd give my left nut to see this shit live! Just inspiring! MF RIP knowing you touched so many with your music!!

  • Everything about this is amazing. The song, the band, the rhythms are so complex, and it's all so rockin'. I love it

  • I took jazz guitar lessons from Lou Carfa in Arlington Texas when I was a kid in high school in the late 80's. I learned so much from him.

  • amazing

  • Carfa!!! ha

    good times

  • Carfa. CARFA. CARFA!!!

  • i didnt know cheech and chong were on the rythem section

  • Ha ha Lou Carfa is my roommate's dad, he would love that comparison, but he gets Mario more often

  • Most likely lineup: Migliore, Traub and Maina on saxes; Nick Lane & Ken Crane on T'bones; Stan Mark, Rusty Barker, Mike Horbal & Alan Wise on T'pts; Lou Carfa (b), Mike Rizzo(gt), David Ramsay (p) & Roberto Petaccia (d). THIS IS MY FAVORITE VERSION OF BIRDLAND, Maynard's from the "Carnival" Album.

  • Anyone know the trumpet section here?

  • The second man from the left small guy with "afro" hair is Stan Mark (lead of the section at that time)... I don't reconize the others (perhaps Noday, Mosello & Tooley).

  • Woo Hoo!!! I was there!! Thanks for the memories!! It was awesome!!!

  • I envy you!

  • Ah...baby pictures of Traubette...a bad mo fo at every age...still is one of the most monstrous tenor playing cats in the USA.

  • Another great version of this wonderful tune...Maynard you will sorely missed. Eric is the man on sax...yeah...

  • My guess is that this performance was recorded in 1982. Am I right?

  • I believe that the date was in late May 1980. Some of these great musicians were no longer with the band in 1982.
