  • might be tense but it seems they're trying to be amiable and get along, which is nice to see. I was afraid Beck would be totally insane, to be honest, based on some of his older interviews.

  • wow, I've wondered about how these guys interacted during that tour for years and years and now I finally get to see.. very intriguing. (Wayne definitely should've given Beck some time to talk though)

  • regardless of who you like better... Wayne constantly cuts off beck... it gets irritating...

  • Flaming Lips had nothing but horrible things to say about Beck. Said he was a pretentious asshole who would show up 4 hours late for rehearsals everyday. And that he spent most of his time yelling at his assistants for bringing him food that wasn't to his liking. Some reporter traveled with them on tour and wrote an article about it. His conclusion that Beck is not as cool as he previously thought, and the title of the article was something like "Beck is a Dick".

  • @Goalieman707

You're right, but your also very obviously biased in the Lips' favor. I've read that article and he wasn't written up nearly as bad as you're making him out to be. The Lips and Beck just weren't a good fit; it was a culture clash. Wayne also probably wasn't as upset as that article made him out to be because he's Wayne and doesn't actually give a shit.

  • ahh i didnt really see anything, but thats just wayne, he's a talker :D

  • This is like watching an interview between cocaine and oxycontin

  • He needs to shut up and let Beck actually talk, the interview is about BECK'S ALBUM, not his.

  • When Wayne says "Alot of times we're in our seperate corners doing interviews" I (if I was the interviewer) would have replied "But you ofcourse manage to do both your interview and Beck's interview anyway!"

Talented guy, but the man doesn't know when to stop. I guess he leaves all the space for his music.

  • wayne is just an asshole. just listening to him in this interview, you get the feeling he'd be a really awkward and conceited person to be around.

  • where's the beck part of that interview. geez that wayne doesn't shut up

  • Beck says "nuclear," Wayne says "nucular." That just about sums it up. :p

  • I love KCRW and Wayne and Beck. Wayne Coyne is very, very ADD, though.

  • wayne coyne's voice is perfect for radio. good thing he went the lips route though

  • i don't one can say what is or isn't historically relevent untill time goes by...

& also Beck is an original "loser" i mean i think he started some stuff...

to me it's Dylan, Beatles, ect

    and now

    Beck, The White Stripes, ect

    just sayin.

  • Thanks for sharing this!

  • does anyone know where i could download this entire KCRW session with beck & the flaming lips, video off course?

i found it on some fan site 3 years ago, but since then i replaced hard drive and now i can't find it again, been searching for 4 days now, i'm slowly going crazy.!..

so, if someone could help me i would appreciate it sooo much!.

this session is beautiful, beautiful music!!.

  • Something in the lighting makes them look like they wear pink lipstick.

    Like their Elizabethan

I like the sense of commradery, and how Wayne and Beck seem like good friends even as the rest of the band is just dilly dallying in the back.

I love how Waynes all talkative and Becks kind of meek and such, like the reserved brilliant introvert and the showman extrovert sitcom buddies.

  • "about Beck being this generation's Dylan", I'd have to spin you around and say that, if anyone, it would be Tupac - who is like the messenger/poet of the street - where Dylan was the messenger of the bohemian view of that time.

If I was to liken Beck to someone from the 60's, I'd say Zappa.

Beck's not political or a populist in any way. He's more ironic and innovative - like Zappa.

Wayne, Lou Reed? Maybe Freddie Mercury. Big showman, sincere songs, etc. He just doesn't have Freddie's pipes!

  • ahaha fuuuuUuUuUck that zappa pwns beck times the universe.

  • It was actually Dylan himself that kinda helped to fuel that interpretation.

And really!! Comparing Tupric to Dylan is like comparing Vanilla Ice to Leonard Cohen. Give me a freaking break.

  • I like my music to have some sort of cultural relevance. Vanilla Ice had none and for that reason (and the fact that I was already an adult when he came out), I never paid him ANY mind (I'm aware of the Qsample, that's it).. Tupac was the voice of his movement, like Dylan was to his (however reluctant he might have been to admit it). If there is any argument for that, I'm all ears.. Beck is a good songwriter (L.Cohen was great too, good mention there), but was not pivotal historically.

  • The Queen/Bowie sample, that is...

  • There is no variation or depth. No humanity or humility, just testosterone, anger, ego, and materialism masking as self esteem. Me me me me, and oh me! This is pivotal?

  • No reason to pick on old Tupac here either. 90% of rap, without any sort of fusion, is crap—egocentric drivel.

Its the difference between bithes be crazy and in a sea change, nothing is safeWe are talking about lyrics now. Should we even talk about variation in sound?I have a broad appreciation: Feist, Spektor, Winehouse, Beck, U2, Floyd, Filter, Sting Police,

  • Cold Play, Flaming Lips, Beta Band, Hall and Oats, Depeche Mode, Prefab Sprout, Led Zepp, Royksopp, The Knife, and even old Blue Eyes. There is a Dwight Yokum song on my Itunes!

  • For the life of me, I cant tell the difference between two rap artists or two rap songs, unless its the difference between a mac daddy and a mac 10 their moaning about ;)

The contrast is remarkable when you may have the pleasure to listen to some sorted sequence of Becks music Hollow Log, Little One , Two Turn Tables and a Microphone, Lost Cause, and Exoskelton-Landslide-Horrible Fanfair.

  • Beck is a scientologist, raised in a hispanic neighborhood, who was even homeless for a period in his life. He doesnt drink alcohol, take drugs, or smoke cigarettes. He is an odd sort to say the least. I have as much in common with him as I do with a bitter black rapper who used to sell rock. Yet Beck has the capacity to relate to me and the world we both live in, regardless of what generation we are from.

I could go and on but its your turn ;)

  • Interesting. I knew some of that about Beck but not all. He's definitely an original talent.

I'm gonna throw in that Wayne Coyne is like the guy who everyone wants their rock stars to be. Cool and caring - like a good dad.

However, I do not find Tupac to be bitter. He talks some shit, but he's not bitter.

Tupac's track "Dear Momma" is the antithesis of Gangsta Rap. It sings the praises for a single mom, raising a family in the inner city.

Nothing materialistic or macho about it.

    Peace.

  • @bodiezoffa Beck doesn't droml alcohol, are you kidding me?

  • Love Beck. Love The Flaming Lips. I'm a big fan of Wayne, Steven and Michael.

I think Beck has a little less presence than Wayne does, not to say that he has less to say, just that Wayne wants to say his bit more.

There's no need to fight this; even if you don't appreciate one side of this interview. Both of them rock!

Someone said something about Beck being this generation's Dylan, and I thought they might have something there.

although, If he's the new Dylan, Wayne is the new Lou Reed.

    x

  • people just hate on wayne coyne because they know he is superior to both beck and the arcade fire in every way

  • hey man i love wayne coyne but it seems to me that he was in the wrong in both of these disputes.

also beck and arcade fire are both equal to if not better than the flaming lips.

  • well that was weird.

  • I'm scared to death that I might be the Wayne of my band.

  • beck is shy, i saw him for my first concert and got to meet him, he took the time to meet his fans but seemed scared or self conciouse

  • I think beck would just laugh at all you slightly pretentious and snooty becknoisseurs...

  • Did anyone else feel some hostility from Beck and Wayne toward each other?

  • You're so right. Wayne says, "suicidal ballads," but Wayne, of all people, should know that while Beck's songs on Sea Change were hearbreaking and "suicidal," the album itself is not about suicide or losing one's self completely. Rather, it's about becoming a new person, finding yourself after a heartbreaking loss of someone in your life. It's a true album. A "full circle" of ideas, as such. Wayne Coyne, of all people, should understand that. This is why I'm so disappointed with Wayne.

  • *subtract the "not" in my other comment.

Yeah, and its hilarious how he acts like the Flaming Lips are such an obscure band and that Beck is everywhere, when TFL were the ones on a car commercial.

He also (IMO) used the drug community to popularize his music.

  • Part 2(continued)

A universal, historical continuity and eclecticism about his work that just astonishes me.While he is referencing the broad spectrum of culture, and music's glorious past,he somehow manages to miraculously weave his own indellible sonic thread into the future. With the foundation of the most profound musical traditions,he breaks all the rules, add to that his impressive capacity for harmony, and killer pop hooks. He is without question, the most important artist of his generation.

  • Well put. It's a shame he's not being appreciated in his own time. Hopefully someday people can see the light on Beck and recognize him for the amazing vision he brings to the table.

  • Yea, i agree Wave beck is a musical alchemist of sorts, i wish people appreciated him more. I try to get numerous people into Beck, but it never really works out. My best friend is like "Oh i have his 'Loser' CD the rest of it sucks" and im like have you tried Odelay or Mutations, The Information? And all i get is "What the hell's an Odelay?"

  • I hear ya hexicnexus, not everyone has cultivated ears like US! Come by and visit my new channel, I would be honored to have YOU onboard..He is the quintessential experimentalist, bless him, always exploring new frontiers..A true pioneer!

  • will Wayne ever shut up though? can't he see Beck's BLUSHING?! huuuh???

  • nonsense, becks shy

  • maybe that's why he's blushing?

  • I love the Lips and am just now getting into Beck. Beck and the Lips are both amazing, creatively and musically. While they are different, they are similar too.

  • of corse he don't, well you apparently do way more than him

  • One more thing to add: On Pitchfork's top 100 albums of the 90's, The Soft Bulletin is #3 behind only MBV's "Loveless" and "OK Computer". It even tops "Nevermind" Beck doesn't hit the list until #19 with Odelay.

  • wayne is on coke or drank alot of coffee, he really says alot without saying anything really. Beck has to keep raising his voice just so he can get one sentence out.

  • just shut up and play wayne

  • i dont know where all these people commenting are picking up any bad vibes at all in this? wayne has a lot to say, seemingly always, and thats never a bad thing

  • The thing is, The Flaming Lips were FAR more pioneering than Beck was. They're indie legends. Beck just had more star power. If anything, Beck should have been honored to play with the Lips. The Soft Bulletin is the greatest American album in the last 10 years IMHO.

  • A thumbs-down?! I agree with LachozaTube. Everyone who's worked with Beck says he's an arrogant asshole, including Wayne. I find it interesting that he didn't 'come out' as a Scientologist (he had totally fabricated a violin story about his hardscrabble upbringing, when in reality he grew up in an affluent family)until after he'd made millions off of us. And I shudder to think where most of that money went. I still like Mellow Gold and Odelay, but find the Lips FAR more talented in every way.

  • I respectfully disagree. Beck is a visionary. Nobody has the mind that Beck has. He in himself is a legend. The Flaming Lips certainly are in their own right, but in a very different way. They're 2 totally different styles, so your point is rather moot. And I also disagree with Soft Bulletin being the greatest album in the last 10 years. It's great, but I don't think it even breaks into the top 20 of the last 10 years.

  • I didn't say Beck WASN'T a visionary and a legend. I simply said that the Lips were around WAAY before Beck and Beck hasn't done anything close to as groundbreaking as the Lips. Look up the boombox experiments, Zaireeka (4 different CD's to be played simultaneously) etc. The musical styles are very different, so you can't compare.. but you can't tell me the Soft Bulletin is any LESS genius than anything Beck has done. Steven Drozd is as good as they come as a songwriter/musician.

  • Again, as much as I love the Lips, I disagree with you saying Beck hasn't done anything as groundbreaking as the Lips. I have everything both artists have ever released, so I'm not just talking out of my ass. Beck brought a new sound to the forefront, a sound that a lot of people weren't ready for. I love Soft Bulletin, it's a fine piece of work, but what you'll see in Beck is that he can do ANYTHING. Listen to Mellow gold, listen to Vultures, listen to Sea change, and listen to Modern Guilt.

  • It's cool. They're both equally amazing IMO. Beck is indeed diverse and has made amazing albums, but soo have the Lips. Many critics have put the Soft Bulletin higher in their top albums lists than any of Beck's albums, but it's all a matter of taste I suppose. To each his own.

  • Exactly. To each his own. I'm not trying to be a dick and disagree with you just to start a flame or anything like that.

And to your other comment, I don't dig pitchfork's ratings at all, so I can't really say much. I do love Soft Bulletin, but I think Guero and Mutations show a lot more open mindedness musically than anything the Lips have done. I love both artists a LOT, I just feel Beck is a more accomplished artist overall.

Again, to each his(or her) own.

  • Simply put...Beck is a sublime musical alchemist. There are VERY FEW artists who can achieve this level of stylistic convergence, regardless of genre or stylistic curve, there hasn't been a creative motif that he hasn't made his own. His musical ingenuity is vastly underrated because of the market driven, commercial imperatives of the industry AND the obvious ignorance of the critical mass. I firmly believe that anyone who is exposed to his music cannot resist, there is simultaneously...

  • God, does that Wayne ever shut up??? What an annoyin man!

  • Wayne hasn't been shy abut saying that Beck acted like a rock star and the pairing was a disaster. I think he was beginning to vent here...

  • love

  • Don't think Wayne is too talkative here, just feeding ideas and agreeing really. Beck sounds pretty boring anyway.

  • the one guy talks alot. talkin over beck...

4:25 the radio guy looks bored

  • Whoever said either of these guys' ego got in the way of anything is dead wrong. Everyone involved with beck or the flaming lips is 100% pure AWESOME!

  • Man, the kcrw sessions are amazing. The tour he did with the flaming lips has got to be the best.

  • is becks face red from playing or is he nervous? he was rubbing his neck an awful lot...

  • it looks like a sunburn ha ha

  • yeah, i had enough of the flaming lips singer...

  • Unbelievably disastrous tour and pairing. It's too bad Wayne's ego got in the way. It's apparent here. But what do you do when you are a "frontman" and are left in the back? He felt inferior, it's obvious.

  • You and your awful name should go straight to bad music hell

  • You are an idiot.

  • !!11!

  • Whoa whoa, I almost didn't catch that. In Utero is a Nirvana album, dumbass, know who/what you're talking about before you sit there and knock them, LOL.

  • I have the entire Lips discography, dear. Go google In Utero, it's a Nirvana album!!1!!1!1!!!! :)

  • I can't even believe this is a discussion, In Utero is definitely a Nirvana album and neither Beck nor Billy Corgan (?) was on it anywhere...nor were Wayne Coyne or any of the Flaming Lips...lol are you people serious?

  • That is easily one of the stupidest things I have ever read in my life. Riddle me this, why do people on the 'net talk shit when they have no idea about what they're talking about and google is RIGHT at their fingertips...? The Flaming Lips or Billy Corgan playing on In Utero??? LOLZ!! You crazy kids. Keep on amusing me ignorant, pompous, jackasses of the world... just stay on youtube and out of politics, k?

  • Iha was in the Smashing Pumpkins dumbass.

Besides have you heard their recent albums?...a bit poppy.

  • James Iha? Now I know you're joking

  • This interview was fairly Boring. ZZZzzz

  • I saw this tour. It was how you say: Badass.

  • Both Wayne and Beck are supercool.

  • It sounds like Wayne said some lame things about beck later on... he needs to shut the hell up imho.

  • Yeah!! Junior and Senior rule!!!

  • Wayne needs to stop interupting he's cool but this was really Beck's tour and I wish Beck would have talked more

  • I couldn't agree more.

  • I Love Beck, Love Wayne and the Lips, but yeah, this is a tad uncomfortable at times... Wayne has that super-extroverted personality, so he just takes over. Beck is one of those interviewees that needs a moment to digest, think, then reply. Wayne's just out there all the time. I can imagine a mutual love and respect, and yet a conflict of personalities.

  • Oh, and Beck has a tendency to be very flushed, red-faced, often. He's so very white. Nevertheless, I found thought it was a rare and interesting conversation. Yeah, Wayne sure does talk a lot.

  • Wayne talks way too much. I think he spoke more at the concert when I last saw the Lips than he sang.

  • I must agree, when I saw him he did talk allot, but I liked it, mostly... he kept on saying how nice it was to be in Copenhagen, when really he was in Roskilde, but he ment well.

  • Wayne talks a little too much, but he's a cool guy.

  • Do you have the musical performances from this session? They were f'n great. I hope you can post if you do.

  • In any case, I think they patched up whatever problems they had, because on the single for Fight Test, the Lips cover The Golden Age from Sea Change, and Beck is well known for covering Do You Realize?? on tour.

  • The Lips toured with Beck for awhile, but it didn't work out. From what I understand, Beck is a staunch Scientologist, which probably rubs Wayne's existential humanist views the wrong way. I guess the Flaming Lips didn't like Beck because he was too pretentious, which he certainly is. But I think Beck sort of idolizes Wayne; he is much younger than Wayne or Michael (the bassist).

  • ya sure, beck idolizes wayne, thats why the lips opened for beck! beck is not pretentious, wayne is a load mouth who will should be put in his place. iv never heard him say a good word about anyone. becks music is far more diverse and superior

  • While I equally love the Lips and Beck, I was definitely annoyed by how much Wayne talked and how rude he was in this.

  • as much as i like wayne he really didnt let beck say a lot considering its a beck interview

  • I don't think that they look like they hate eachother.

  • I never got the whole story on why they ended up hating each other...I know Wayne said they felt that Beck put on the whole crazy-artsy pose, but he was really a limo dwelling hermit...I wonder what Beck's opinion of them was...

  • Does he? I don't know much about him beyond his music and this one movie he was in...he seems pretty weird, which is a good thing. It lets me know that I'm not the only one!

  • yeah, well i don't think they really like each other.

you should lsiten to more beck, you'll love him! hehe

  • Since I posted this comment, a month ago, I got what is widely known as his first demo "Banjo Story". It's very cool, it reminds me a bit of Daniel Johnston...and I know he's a fan. Beck is cool, he has played on tribute CDs of my absolute favorite artists. Mississippi John Hurt and Daniel Johnston. I think he's great, but I don't know about his personal life.

  • i can tell beck feels awkward

  • in some FL interview wayne coyne called beck self-centered diva. funnily enough, mr. coyne is not the most sane person in the world.. maybe two eccentrics in one room is too much. both make great music anyway.

  • wayne talks a lot

  • I think they both hate each other! hahaha

  • i think wayne hates beck.

  • boy this awkward. do you get the feeling that beck hates wayne?

  • lol definitely

  • he's always like that

  • hahah Beck is all flushed or sunburnt or something
