I made a 3 minute podcast as part of my radio work. The title is Should Greyhound Racing be banned? I argue why it shouldn't be banned! Have a listen - as I am willing to hear your side of the argument. Check out my channel and click on the link to my webpage to check it out!
Ignorant propaganda. Educate yourself on a topic before you speak about it. This is clearly a case of someone stating their own misguided opinions as facts. Just because you don't like something, does not give you the right to make up lies about it. If you really loved the greyhounds, you would support racing.
Thats great that you've done that. So obviously you know what happening to them if your re-homing them ? So you should realize that by saying what they did, they were just adding emphasis to the problem. Many actually do need homes, so, so many. Maybe wherever you are you are able to get these poor dogs adopted, but not every place in the world has some one like that.
"Every single dog that comes off the track has nowhere to go".
I have re-homed every single greyhound I have ever bought & its home decided before I've bought it, including with me. 99% of owners are responsible & love their dogs but like in all walks of life, the minority scum ruin it for others. Some parents sexually abuse their children, by tarnishing everyone like this with the same brush are you suggesting people shouldn't have children? Or are the anti's producing a one sided argument?
I think they need to make the gambling end of it illegal. If there is no money to be made, then people will race pets for fun, like with agility, frisbee, fly-ball and obedience classes. You don't see pets who retire from obedience shows being euthanized by the thousands do you?
@jmdnarri the very vocal political and social minority who screams louder with their lies, half truths, and outright deceit than the silent majority.Usually this is founded by homosexual fringe groups who hide behind their social status with cowardice , as they are now a protected group. (which in a democratic society no social group is supposed to stand above any other equal protection under the law. again subverting the true democratic process under which most of them hide.)
The home needs to be right for the individual dog, they have suffered enough, this includes a secure excersise area where possible. also these dogs are very fast and can easily shred their legs on concrete. like any other rehoming centre there is a responsibiltu to the welfare of these neglected 'angels'
there is money being made on both sides, the people who are looking for a place for them are making money just as fast as the people racing them. I tried to get one several times, but was discriminated because my yard was not what the people wanted for the dog. These dogs will sadly continue to be killed as long as they are kept from the general public, people dont know them because of this so many people believe they are not a people dog.
-dog owner buys in greyhounds for rat and rabbit work, the only legal quarry for dogs in the uk, bedlington whippets, are the main dog for these quarries, legalise coursing, and more greyhounds will be adopted instead of banning it, why not try and regulate it and put restrictions on the numbers of dogs that can be owned. responsible dog owners dont let the dogs get injured if they can help it, its the pikeys and poachers that make coursing look bad.
if you wish you could do something to help you can, contact the states in which racing is legal and let them know how sick it makes you to think that they allow such a horrific thing to take place. copy this film in an email to a representative, and congressman, a governor let them know how you feel about the sick practices in their state. it take a second.
Oldmusher..The simple reason he dispose of his greyhound is because the animal has become a financial liablity. That is all greyhound racing boils down to. No compassion, no love or care, just pure finances. And this attitude can be seen throughtout the greyhounds racing career, without any money being spent to ensure the greyhounds protection and welfare.
u people dnt think i love greyhounds and have them as pets but a young dog needs loads of free running and there is no ware 2 take them so we have 2 take them 2 skwlin track 4 there proper exercice so unless some 1 generouse is going 2 suply this 4 public use then as a pup owner we rely on the racing indistry 4 its facilitysownina a pupy or young dog is totaly different 2 owning an older one they r not born old lol unless ur say only rich ppl that can afford land can own them
@ringwaxy wrong there is actually little money to be made as a dog owner.average income for a winning dog $300/race they only race about 50 times in their career. this is a hobby for people with money. they love these dogs I have met several owners all ready.
The Kennel owners may not be getting money by euthanizing these dogs but they sure are saving money on taking care of the dog so obviously they are going to kill these animals. When did an inconvenience become so much more important than life. These animals never asked to be born, its not their fault the business is greedy. They are given one shot to prove their worth. So what if they arent fast enough, that doesnt mean they deserve to die.
Everyone who lobbies in favor of ending Greyhound racing (and any other animal job or sport) must realize that a lot more of the animals will die if they have no purpose. Understand that a kennel owner gets NO MONEY for euthanizing a dog that can't do its job. They are working dogs for those animals, not pets. How about lobbying for race classes for older hounds? I'd bet on older hounds racing as well as the young ones.
I understand what you are saying but that is a rather short sighted view. You are missing the point: If Greyhound racing were banned, the dogs wouldn't be bred in the first place.
greyhounds that are owned and run responsibly, live a long and healthy life, the happiest dogs are the ones that get to hunt, and provided they are looked after and retired at the right age they remain happy for a long time, but already less people are adopting greyhounds from the racing industry as the jobs that they can do have now become illegal, hare coursing and fox work, as well as deer work, plenty of retired greyhounds can still work these quarries, but now that its illegal, no working-
The greyhounds that run at BAGS meetings are the unluckiest of the lot. These meeting are held during the day, not as a social event but simply to televise races to the betting shops. The greyhounds are low grade dogs (slowest) and can be bought for £200. This greyhound will be disposed of once it starts to lose or sustain injuries that are costly to treat. A kennel owner will not want to pay a vet when he can replace the greyhound with another £200 dog or will he pay to have it PTS humanely!
That is a very good suggestion and I'll do that! I do intend to tell it like it is! The racing industry is avery powerful lobby & will punish me for sure! I don't care! Hugs,
Thank you for your interest! We happen to own two greyhounds and a pit mix!1 Wew love them all and are aware of the truth in what you said!1 It is all bout greed & money! Extraneous, overbred greys are killed to cut costs, period! I am working on a video to expose the abuses because of racing!
It simply is not true what KJH1995 says. People who are involved with running rescue centres for Greyhounds do not pocket the monet that people donate to 'drive flashy cars'. That is a very stupid comment to make, and distracts from the good work that they do in looking after and trying to find homes for these wonderful animals.
Greyhound Racing has an 80% adoption going strong. Greyhounds love to chase it's what they were bred to do for thousands of years. My god people watching this do not send these people money that's what they want you to do so they can sit on their asses and drive fancy cars from bullshit lies. And it is illegal to put down a healthy racing Greyhound.
Sorry kjh, I don't see any appeals for money nor fancy cars. If your statistic is so good how come there are so many welfare orgs in the uk?
Of course it's illegal to kill any healthy dog, but it doesn't stop people doing it.
But you miss an essential point, the racing industry is driven by financial incentives to have only winners...so when your dog isn't capable of winning no more, you have no incentive to keep it on.
In May I was fortunate enough to adopt a retired geryhound.
I can't imagine my beautiful, quiet, gentle girl racing around a track in all the noise and activity. I realise she is one of the lucky ones, now in a loving home.
Thank you for all you are doing to raise awareness of the abuse and exploitation of these wonderful dogs.
They eat sleep and live with these creatures and think about them all the time, they cannot bear to be parted from their hound for any long periods of time, and will talk incessantly to any friends they have left about them!
Sadly this is a very difficult addition to cure, and one that will remain with you for as long as you live. All us addicts can do is to talk to like-minded individuals to gain strength from other peoples greyhound
Want a guard dog then forget greyhounds. Want a loving, faithful, well behaved, easy to look after dog, that needs little exercise, and sleeps 20 hours a day, a dog that is great with children and strangers. GET A GREYHOUND.

I agree with you about being gentle, they are also docile and placid to the extreme. my two are certainly not a deterrent against burglars!
If anyone rings the bell or comes to the door, they will greet complete strangers with wagging tails and in the sit position. The only sound you will hear if we had burglars is the sound of the burglar tripping over the dogs.Want a guard dog......... forget greyhounds

the problem lies with the bookmaking industrie and there greed for more and more racing at less cost.

Check out the NGRC website (google ngrc)
where there are rules (135 & 136) and timings, eg Belle Vue has track times for 470m hurdles (the H after the distance)
Hope this helps.
