A Frenchman told me that the Concorde appeared even more beautiful to him when he heard they lost money with it, and we Germans make beautiful things, too. But...this car is very beautiful, and it consumes relatively littel gas in extreme contradt to the Concorde, but this car never got into mass production :o(. Some years ago, there was no youtube-video of this car at all!!!! We need this car, not a Bugatti Veyron or a Concorde, both needed to be subsidised!!!

Its not that they do not want to make it but the cost of putting it into production and only being a single seater would limit its appeal.

The Smart ForTwo Cdi which if driven very carefully has returned in excess of 100mpg has not sold in sufficient numbers in Europe since its lauch in 1999 to even consider introducing it in the US.

This 1L concept delivers over 300mpg but would be far too costly to produce.

It was just a VW concept on what the company could achieve

Vw Lupo 3LTdi even in the countries it was available for sale cost nearly £11,000 even in Germany

Such cars use magnesium and other expensive components to keep weight down to achieve its impressive fuel consumption

The 95mpg Lupo 3L sold very poorly due to its high engineering cost and that car had room for 4 when this 1L is a single seater

People want comfort and practicality not huge fuel consumption

@llandudnoboy the 1l isn't a single seater, neither was the 2002 prototype (which i overall liked a lot better...) there are 2 seats in line, like in a sailplane.

i think narrow cars with little fuel consumption like this one would be AWESOME and people really would like them as commuter-vehicles...

hope they produce it in 2013 as they promised

Fuel Consumption does not appear to be number one priority in the Uk or the US.

Sales of very thirsty SUV especially Range Rovers and large luxury salloons that can do less than 30 Uk gallons are still extremely popular.

Strangely enough both petrol and especially diesel which is accounting for over 54% of new car sales in Europe has reached £6 a gallon with petrol being £1.26 a Litre but still thirsty 4x4 vehicles are selling well.

People want comfort not economy

@llandudnoboy yeah, overall you're right they still sell very well... but let's see in a few years - i really hope people start to live more rational bacause they probably can't afford so many things they do today... it maybe would even reduce traffic jam. anyway i think if they make great commercials (which VW always does) people will buy it, maybe mostly as a 2nd vehicle for driving to work and back home, but even that would be a great start

I drive a small very frugal 80+ to the gallon Smart Cdi diesel and in my present circumstances it suits me just fine.

There is a VAT increase here in the Uk in the New Year so i will be paying near enough £6 for every gallon i purchase but the high cost of fuel willnot effect my driving that much.

This VW 1L will be the car of the future when only the very well off can afford to run a car due to each gallon costing £20

£6 now WHO KNOWS £20 in years to come

A Smart car i agree is not for everyones tastes but you would have thought a very frugal city runaround would have been ever so common here in the Uk.

They are increasing in popularity but they are still heavily out numbered by cars that do half of what my Smart does to the gallon.

People have resigned to the fact that fuel is now £6 a gallon and when before many would complain bitterly blockading fuel depots nobody seems to care anymore.

It may be nearer £7 next year
