hopefully you learned something from King harley...!!! low carb my ass!! Harley is the Man!!! I dropped 15 lbs in 2 weeks and kept it off doin Harleys plan...!!
I usually have to turn any Harley audio off about halfway through. At best, he's about 80% attitude and 20% content. For that reason alone, this interview is pure gold. Can we get more of this version of Harley, for those of us who lack the tolerance for his usual crap or "schtick"? :o)
@iusecomputers2 'The China Study' book is just that- a book. Essentially it's an interpretation of an actual study done that's loaded with vegan/vegetarian agendas and completely omits very important data. The study itself only showed that people who ate more plant foods were healthier, but EVERYONE in the study ate meat. All it proves is that increase plant foods in the diet are beneficial- it does nothing to prove that ONLY plant foods benefit health.
I listened to the full version of this interview (as well as the one with Don Mastez) and think you handled it great! I applaud you for your promotion of people must pick the diet that is best for their body!! I've lost over 100lbs, continue to work out 5 -6 days a week, and hope to become a personal trainer. I lost it on "carb cycling" by eating low carb 3 days, then high (high quality) carbs 1 day, and so on. I have no issues with weights or interval cardio on my low carb days.
My point being that everyone reacts differently! Also, Durianrider should check out Bowolf's channel-great Atkins channel and he is a marathoner! Bravo, Jimmy!
Wont be listening to this guy again. Tired of his promotion of bad science (The china study) while not mentioning the meat in the study and using his athletic ability to validate a personal choice not to eat meat.
He gets in the way of proper evidence based medicine.
If LC was superior for pro cyclists then they all would be doing it. As a recent support crew volunteer for the AMGEN Tour of California, I can tell you they're not. If you convinced a pro that rubbing Yak poop on his thighs would give him a few seconds advantage over the other guys, he would do it.
That's all the proof I need.
Thanks Harley for saving me from 4 years on Atkins.
speaking of digestion, since I started mostly meat and fat, I have had the best digestion of my life. Last time I ate sweet potatoes my blood sugar shot up about 70 points. So not sure I could do it his way or not... Sounds good though
@BibleStudy888 Well it depends on your fat consumption. Look it up, if you eat high amounts (above 10%) of fat together with high- GI foods like sweet potatoes -of course your bloodsugar will rise up to the roof! It all about the fat to sugar ratio- too much fat (also plant fats- keep in mind oil is 100% refined fat!) cloggs the walls of your artheries, digestive tract and cell walls. So when high GI or even fruit is consumed your bloodsugar levels rise and have no way going into the cell for..
@elfe1982 I eat about 70-80% fat ratio. It's the only way I feel satiated and also lose weight. When I ate low fat years ago I was hungry and shaky and dizzy all the time. I can't begin to tell you all the symptoms that went away after I quit sugar and white flour. I was addicted to sugar before and could barely function due to all my symptoms. I do best on high protein and fat. My mind is sharper and I have more energy and don't get hungry. But you seem to have something on fat/carbs 2gether
@BibleStudy888 Thats what i ment, 70%-80% fat is very high and together with sugar your bloodsugar will go crazy.. Fat is very dense in calories, its natural to feel satiated but is it really healthy in the long term? You might loose weight and feel good now cause you avoid sugar- and you better do when you consume such a high amount of fat and protein. This diet I eat is about eating whole foods, first and foremost and white flour, chocolate, candy, cake, soda, fast food are not whole foods.
@elfe1982 LOL, I knew exactly what you meant and took it as such. I know what whole foods are. Good thing I stopped all those things you mentioned that are not. When I ate only whole grains and lean meats, salads and veggies, (and nothing white etc) I was hungry and dizzy all the time. So I am doing it this way. Thanks for your thoughts. The thing that messed me up while eating high fat was when I tried white rice to see what the effect would be. I got shakey, short of breath, etc & stopped
@BibleStudy888 I actually experienced the same symtoms back than the shakyness and dizzyness..i know what you are talking about. Refined sugar, even wholegrain pasta- all are processed. When you make sure you get enough calories from fresh fruit, veggies and occational avocado, nuts and seed you will not experience these symptoms. In the beginning i could not believe that this diet could possibly work for me.. then i went low fat vegan and included more and more fruit-
@BibleStudy888 you can see my channel for recipes and updates. I underate on calories and my body craved calories- when we are really hungry we eat everything! I gained weight by undereating cause the body will store fat to make sure it has reserves. The key is to take away all processed foods and stimulants like coffee, alcohol and cigaretts, eat at least 80% of your diet raw and if oyu can organic, and to make sure your fat intake is low. I eat a whole watermelon in one sitting ..lol
@BibleStudy888 and i feel amazing, then i eat lots of dates to get my calories, i rotate all the beautiful fruits out there but i always have dates with me.. I eat about 3000-5000 calories a day and i am 5'1 and 110 lbs! I lost so much weight the firt month about 10kg, don't know if its 5lb in your country. And i thought i was the fat burning metabolism..lol My fitness levels improved so much! Check out liferegenerator here on youtube- he is a former bodybilder :)
@BibleStudy888 And no salt, it binds the fluids in your body! Take it easy if you can't do all at once.. make sure you are hydrated- drink plenty of water and sleep lot's ;) iN the end these are all suggestions from me, you need to decide, but be sure to check your health on this diet- long term ketosis is linked to kidney and adrenal failure and problems, heart disease and circulation problems. And in the bible self stands what food man should consume:
@elfe1982 that's bs that long term ketosis causes those problems, those are all clinacally linked to chronic carbohydrate consumption. ketosis is a natural state for man to be in. and no one should take serious dieting advice from the bible...the fact that you are referencing it (even if a bible person brought it up first) makes it clear you are bs....
@hjillagen HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA... this comment proves how fast you judge others, without knowing them- by just a little bit of text you read. I quoted the bible to bring the subject closer to this man who after his name here might be religious.. and there is nothing wrong about being religious.. but i am actually not religious. I work at a hospital, i study this so i know what clinical studies are around.
@BibleStudy888 Genesis (1.29) clearly states: "And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat." This makes it quite obvious that the recommended food for human beings is herbs, seeds, grains, and fruits
@BibleStudy888 In Romans (14.20-21) the verses are: "For meat destroy not the word of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence. It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor anything whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak." The word for meat here is broma, which again is a general word that means foods, and the word for flesh is kreas, which does mean flesh.
@elfe1982 By the way, can you show me an actual study that proves that saturated fat causes heart disease? Also, all that fiber in a veggie rich diet causes chronic diarrhea and constipation. biblelife org/fiber htm
@BibleStudy888 nourishment. Then the pancreas comes into play and excretes insulin as a helping tool for transporting sugar into the cells and out of the bloodstream. If you now continue to eat high fatty foods (also animal foods) together with sugar (fruit, grains, potatoes, even ice cream, chocolate ect.) your pancreas is getting exhausted and after time this will cause lots of issues in the body incl. diabetes type 2, candida, weight gain, mental sluggishness, fatique ect.
@BibleStudy888 I myself eat vegan food for 4 years. I eat little to no overt fats, i am not 100% raw so i eat steamed veggies, rice, potatoes and warm soup.. but hey one can transition slowly..i am up to 95% raw food now.. my health, vitality and looks are better than i ever felt- incl. digestion! And yes i did do the atkins style diet a couple of years ago too..it wracked my health! Colesterol over 100 i just say..you need to decide yourself what is best for you but give it a go if you're
@BibleStudy888 interested- but expect sluggishness and cravings..and of course high blood sugar raise.. after all fat is getting metabolized way slower than sugar, so if you eat more fat in the beginning than suggested your body will transition and get rid of all the metabolic waist (incl. uric acid= urin) that comes from a high protein/animal diet. If you need support i suggest Harleys website: 30bananasaday(dot)com =) or read the book of Dr. Douglas Graham- 80/10/10 diet- its a must :)
@BibleStudy888 "To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? Saith the Lord: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of goats. When ye spread forth your hands, I will hide Mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear, for your hands are full of blood." (Isaiah 1.11,15) "He that killeth an ox is as if he slew a man." (Isaiah 66.3)
funny, we have 3 of the top Olympic swimmers in the world on low carb paleo type diet and performance has only improved and are all competing in the 2012 Olympics. How many Olympic athletes Harley has worked with?
Examples of low carbers who have good endurance performance are people like YouTuber Buwolf, who has run marathons on low carb, and Swedish triathlete Jonas Colting, as well as many Paleo athletes who do Crossfit, which is glycolytically demanding. The problem with the Johnston's experience, is that most endurance athletes have been indoctrinated with the high carb mantra, so of course Johnston has never seen it work, because no one within his circle has tried it for any length of time.
Johnston also believes that a low carb animal protein/fat based approach to diet can't work for endurance training, even though, as you pointed out, the work of Dr. Stephen Phinney and Dr. Jeff Volek proves, that after a few weeks of adaptation, it can work for endurance athletes. Johnston seems to only rely on his personal experiences. Well if personal experiences are all that count, I have never met a strong vegan bodybuilder PERSONALLY, so does that disprove Johnston?
@alphacause Look up Noah Hannibal. Vegan for 17 years and won the 2010 Australian HEAVYWEIGHT bench press champs. :)
Ive NEVER seen a super fit athlete that eats low carb and I literally trained with some of the fittest people on the planet. Im open to it though. Bit like if someone can show me a bike that you can ride to the moon, Im open to that too as thats about the same possibility as being super fit on low carb. ;)
@durianrider YOU may have never seen them, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. I don't doubt that there are physically fit champion level vegans, but my point was, using your own logic, just because I did not PERSONALLY see them, doesn't mean they don't exist either. There are plenty of low carb athletes who perform at elite levels. Try looking up Jonas Colting, who is a triathlete or Lindsey Vonn, a world class alpine ski racer. Both adhere to some variant of low carb dieting.
@alphacause Ive talked with Jonas personally on email and he eats most of his calories from carbs when he wants to train and race well. He also doesnt prescribe any caloric ratios so to say he is a low carb advocate is inaccurate.
Alpine Skiing? Yeah, that could work on low carb cos its 100% DOWN HILL lol! They take a ski lift back to the top of the mountain.
Any other low carb REAL athletes you can mention? So far nobody has given me a single reputable source.
@durianrider Your version of 'trained with' is tacking onto the end of group rides when a professional athlete is in your area. You have no clue what any of them eat.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@Lakkhesis1976 Bro, your just another jealous hater. Fact is even if you had the confidence to go out training with the fastest cyclists on earth, you'd get dropped on the first hill or interval.
Not sure what your definition of 'training' is lol! How about you watch some of my vids sometime then tell me I dont know what they eat etc. Tell me I dont have any friends that race. Tell me that Ive never raced in Europe. Tell me Ive never had lunch with Cadel at the AIS whilst I was there in 2001.
@durianriders 'Bro'... You can tell yourself I'm a 'jealous hater', it amounts to about as much truth as all the other bullshit.
As for your attempt at an impressive list of cycling qualifications... the facts are that you look like utter shit, (and worse by the week) you sound like a madman, you're totally unable to come to the fore in any health related discussion, balk at BAAAAASIC nutritional and physiological queries and give dangerous advice to any dick stupid enough to listen to you.
Secondly, Johnstone misrepresents what Mark Sisson says. Having read Sissons "The Primal Blue Print", and having listened to numerous interviews with him, Sisson states that one CAN do long distance workouts with his low carb primal approach to diet. What Mark Sisson argues against is the efficacy of long distance workouts, what he calls "chronic cardio", in producing long term, injury free, health. Sisson thinks it actually works against long term health. So Johnston is misrepresenting Mark.
@alphacause I agree with you on Mark's stance about chronic cardio but... "one CAN do long distance workouts with his low carb primal approach" is misrepresenting too.
"Over the years coaching athletes, I’ve found that drinking 10-20 grams of sugars every 15 minutes after the first 60-90 minutes helps keep glucose in the bloodstream and thereby spares muscle glycogen." ~ Mark Sisson
That's 40-80 carbs per hour. Not low carb distance training.
Jimmy, thanks for getting Harley Johnstone on your show. I am looking forward to the entire interview. It may be premature to judge, by this segment alone, but it seems that Johnstone is already demonstrating signs of not being open to the science that is on the opposite side of his vegan position. He seems to be living in a myopic world, where the ONLY success stories are the vegans - not acknowledging many super fit guys who follow low carb Paleo, like Robb Wolf or Dr. Mat Lalonde.
hopefully you learned something from King harley...!!! low carb my ass!! Harley is the Man!!! I dropped 15 lbs in 2 weeks and kept it off doin Harleys plan...!!
