I am wanting to make a 12" George Formby figure. I have a 12" body but need the right clothes and hat (what do you call the hat he wore) and the banjo ukulele itself all in 1/6 scale.
Dubbed - as were most of his film performances. Yes they could dub in those days and earlier. Look at George singing "I couldn't let the stable down" in "Come on George". At one stage his mouth stops moving as he momentarily forgets the start of the second verse, yet the singing continues. It was common practise to mime even back then.
I've only recently "discovered" George and am thankful for YouTube! I've been playing the guitar for about 50 years . . but guess who has ordered a banjolele? Can't wait 'till it arrives! George is FANTASTIC!
@guitarplayer1948 I've been looking to order a banjolele myself for awhile now, but I'm nervous I'll make a bad choice. How did you decide which one was right for you? Do you have an opinion on one you think is particularly good?
@johnizzle725 Hello! I was equally nervous about buying my banjolele. I got a GOLD TONE "banjolele deluxe." The only difference between the regular and the "deluxe" is that the deluxe has a resonator on it which makes it a bit louder and brighter. It's hard to buy an instrument without hearing it or trying it...a leap of faith! NO music store around me had banjoleles, so I had to do it online. I've been very pleased with mine.
@guitarplayer1948 Ahh thanks so much! Same situation, absolutely NO banjoleles anywhere I know of, so I've been hunting for reliable opinions online. Thanks for your suggestion and vote of confidence! The Gold Tone looks like a good buy, I think I'll pick one up.
I enjoy reading the comments on these wonderful old timers, except when an idiot like Ulmeyda08 has his foulmouthed say. Can these people not put a sentance together without including the F word, I'm sure George Formby would not be happy to see such childish ignorance.Have some respect you clown.
One cannot deny the beauty of the young ingenue to whom George addresses his remarks. She has a great smile, lovely legs, and the dress reacts superbly to her foot tapping. Obviously, a woman of taste, who likes banjolele, too!
george formby is so cool how did he get away with lyrics like he used i dont know can any one tell me if he sang live in the films dont look like he is mimeing and it dont sound like the records i always wanted to know
Such a typical Formby scene - playing the uke while girls look at him adoringly. Where he found all those babes is a mystery, because British film actresses in 1930s were a real plain bunch. I think George must have had all the good looking ones locked up on the top of the Blackpool Tower or something.
same but i was told id be looking at the thick end of £200 to get one, apparently there not tht common but i bought a normal uke and when i get good ill then look for one. might as well get good first until u find one
I'm related to him :D George Formby is my great, great uncle, or something like that. I found out after I started busking with my banjo in the UK and got requests for his songs.
I used to watch all the Formby movies in the 40s, small town theatre in Hanley SK Canada. I hope you are getting some of his royalties! Leebm29 at yahoo dot com
You can now. A box set of seven of his films was recently released - have a look on Amazon. They have great musical performances, comedy which still works today and something else you rarely see in British pre-war films - really attractive actresses. I don't know where George found them, but his leading ladies were always real babes.
It is indeed an Abbot uke banjo, as LIVERLADD says. I've seen it several times, as it was on display in the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham, UK. (George was a motor bike enthusiast.) I haven't been there since the fire of 2003, so I don't know if the instrument is still on show there.
Sorry, ukegaz, my mistake. It was the Abbott in the Motor Cycle Museum, and I just assumed this was the same one. I must confess that while I know something about guitars I don't know much about ukes.
I think that is a Abbot uke banjo my favourite banjo. My great uncle had one and i played it once in awhile and loved its tone. George was the best no dout thx for the video:)
Your video clip is great and I've rated it as awesome. Please check out mine on some 1920's trading cards of musical instruments, including the banjo.
Oh yeah, good ol' George. He was a HUGE star in the UK whose career spanned four decades. All the British rock stars from the '60s grew up on George Formby records; this is why so much classic British rock has the humor it has, and why many of the famous British rock stars were ukulele fans/collectors. He was offered a deal to make a film in the U.S. during the war, but he turned it down in favor of entertaining the troops. Hollywood never called again, and thus he's virtually unknown over here.
