Well, for having shod horses for over 30 years, both in France, Spain and Canada, I can tell this is "ferrer à la Française", which I would translate in "shoeing using the French tradition".It comes from the times where most the shoeing were done on draft horses, and for those who did'nt have a rack, two people were necessary.
who cares if it takes two or three guys to shoe a horse, if they are frends or even if they get paid for it, do what it takes to get the job done and don't listen to anyone........you might do it this way yourself...I might
your allowed to in england, theres a area in the foot, down the hoof wall that isnt live, theres no blood there, its not a risk its a skill but honestly if you have no shoeing experiance or dont understand the technical sides to it then dont bother saying this stuff, barefoot is jst unnatural and shouldnt be done if there goin on roads and concrete floorin, its cruel to put em through the pain
concrete where there obviously gonna get foot sore and lotsa foot abesses, also there diet can efect there feet so y feed em on what u do cause thts unnatural to.
as for those who wrote that about the frog being an absorber, well its also a fact tht da frog gets soft when there on there diets and when there on shavings ect... so it would rip da frog up nd ull b into blood
as 4 those who sed nailin makes the foot num thts aload of crap cause it really doesnt, its y it takes so long before
this video is in germany because in germany the owners/grooms hold the horses feet for the farrier, but ive just read down the comments and i laughed hard
people that say shoes are bad are jst stupid and dont know what there talking bout, what experiance have u seen to say tht lol just cause u know 1 technical word u think uno it all lol
if its so un natural then y keep horses in hay/ shaving covered stables which makes there feet soft then y do u ride out on road or tie em up on
ahh let me correct u there, dark not been a bitch or nothing but the frog is actuly for blood circulation around the foot the shoe is to keep the soul and toe off the floor to stop lameness, as this is coming from my mouth i'de also like 2 add im a farrier is australia and the easiest way 2 hold a foot is between ur legs u have more control and it will not pull u out further then its knee can reach,i think them 2 were just nailing in a loose shoe
You guys are silly. This is how they shoe horses in whichever country this is in. It takes two guys. One to hold the foot one to work on the hoof. This horse was probably being unco-operative so he cranked the leg up (if its higher he cant pull away). Also horseshoes only limit circulation if you put them around the horses neck.
The horse's leg is held way too high and that is why he is not comfortable but sometime you have to do what you have to do to get the job done. It is a big "mule". sorry
dont do this at home; "no foot, no horse" call a blacksmith; the guy that is holding the leg is letting go the leg before the nail was cutted and finished (on outside of the foot)
also, each foot has a very strong pulse to pump blood up and down the legs, each step makes the hoof somewhat expand and that keeps the blood moving, this is why horses have to keep moving and only sleep around three hours a day. but when the horse is kept in a confined area, with a shoe that dosent give or take, you see swollen fetlocks, and you get habits like box walking.
Oh, I didn't realize you were one of those rabid barefooting people. I'm done arguing with you. I actually thought you were some ignorant non-horse owner.
lol you go chick, proud of u hun, u rlli no how to show someone up think u won this one fair and square with ur knowledge lol,u clever little thing u!!!!! xXx
in some areas where theres hard ground the horse sometimes needs to be shod cuz otherwize the feet will wear down too quickly. my horse dosent hav shoes but my friends horse needs them where she livs cuz otherwise her feet are worn down untilthe frog actually gets ruined.
The shoe raises the frog up off the ground, and we all know that the frog is the horses' shock absorber. unless some people decide metal is some rubber thing that can magically absorb shock, then where is the shock going to go when the hoof hits the ground? all the way up the leg. so in time, you see horses falling lame and no-one knows why.
oh and i agree with darkbay24, horses can feel nails being driven into their hoof walls and they become numb to it which is why after a few times they become "well Behaved" one of my previous horses had to be sedated to be shod does that not tell people something!!
Uh...horses are PREY animals. You hold their foot and you are taking away their ability to flee! Shoes are scary. Not because they hurt...but because you are trapping a prey animal that hasn't gotten to know that it's safe.
We hav found that barefoor although is not the answer for every horse is the best way for the majority of horses and i feel that people shoe hrses for their convenience and not the comfort of the horse. To see our horses in action just check out my videos.
he horses we help to look after have been barefoot for 4 years and are perfectly great without shoes, their movements are a lot more flowing as the shoes as most people think do not absorb the shock of the movement however make it worse for the horse therefore the shod horse moves completley differently.
The horse isn't being reactive because the shoeing hurts him. The horse is being reactive because he's afraid to have his feet handled and hasn't been taught how to stand for the farrier.
Yes. That's exactly what I'm saying. If you've ever seen a horse being shod that is trained to stand for the farrier, they sometimes even fall asleep during the process. That is not living tissue and it has no nerve enervation.
i have seen farriers being kicked by young horses who had not had a shoe put on ever, had their feet handled and picked up and stuff from a very early age... the shoe reduces circulation therefore makes the hoof go somewhat numb, that is y u see horses that have been shod a few times, not react to badly to the nails being driven into the hoof wall, the hoof wall is extremly close to the sensitive laminie and to me, it is an unessisery risk when horses can go perfectly well without shoes.
I have one barefoot and one shod. It's ridiculous to think that shoeing hurts the horse. If a horse can go well barefoot, that's great. But not all horses do well without shoes which is why I have one of each.
my problem is that it is unatural to nail metal to a hoof, and yes i know riding is unatural too but before the medival times, shoes where unheard of. man made shoes because people had started to keep their horses in stalls, where they are standing in their own poop and urine and the hoof wall was starting to rot, so while shoes solved that problem, it created more.
I hope they used the proper tools and nails and did a proper trim and everything before hand...You can't just simply hammer on a shoe without thinking. :(

IT's a hell of a lot safer to have two or three guys when shoeing a large draft horse. They can hurt you bad in a hurry.
