Well I could be completely wrong, but since he's like the scarecrow which is kind of like a very large stuff doll for outside, I think the doll thing just works. Maybe. I don't know.

It could also be a play on the dolls they had in the OZ stories. The rag doll made of patches being the one that stands out most in my head. OF course I'm a HUGH OZ girl and I could be looking into this WAY to much.
