The last time I saw "Castrato" it was on my plate in a restaurant near Molinella in Italy. It was delicious !
This Cecilia Bartoli may sing relatively well (certainly not superb) but the "artwork" used for her album is imho rather offensive as far as it may concern "good" taste and or publicity for Italy.
@elsspoel What ever is up your butt needs to come out. Enjoy beauty and art, and enjoy the place she is at, and where she has come from La Cenerentola at AGE 20, not the lack you seek to find...
Cecilia's website says releases internationally on October; I read UK releases it for sale on Oct. 2 & Canada on October 6, and for sum reason in the US they pushed from the 13th to Oct.27! I'm ordering it from as an import from canada as it will be the same product: the book with the 2 discs, I also ordered imports AMOUREUSES by PATRCIA PETTIBON & the VIVALDI ARIAS album by MAGDALENA KOZENA :-D
How wonderful! This album will not only show off her voice, but also bring to light some of the more neglected songs of the repertory. It is nice to see that she is going to be singing Broschi, regardless of how cliche the idea of Farinelli is now. I think people do not realise how many children were castrated for music, and the unfortunate thing is that not all of them grew up to have sucessful careers.
Isnt it odd though that troughout this video she is saying castratos rather than castrati?
Interesting album. But strong similarities with Claudio Osele's Lava album, just released in Germany. Soprano Simone Kermes sings 12 Neapolitan arias, written for the great castratos like Caffarelli, etc. Nine out of twelve tracks are world premiere recordings.
Why do I get so many "red thumbs"? I adore Cecilia and I'm looking forward to the new album. But there ARE similarities with Osele's CD "Lava" (period, composers, Naples, arias all written for castratos, etc.). That's not my fault. Please don't punish the messenger for the message...
I kind of agree with you... I love Cecilia (I don't really like Kermes though) but they seem to release the same kind of music at the same time... However, the themes are not exactly the same. Sacrificium deals with the castration itself, while Lava is just one more compilation of baroque arias, without focusing on the castrato theme itself (which is a shame).
Finally, no more bel canto nonsense... I can't wait for this album to come out., but in spite of what she says, I still think the artwork is horrible.

Not quite. Her Vivaldi album was the first one she recorded out of her own whim, the record company gave her the oportunity as a "gift" for giving them so much profit. Little were they to know that it was that exact same album that was going to be her bestseller up to date. As Ceci herself said "I am a child of the 18th century". Your roots are where your heart is. :)
My point is that she started singing Rossini, not baroque music :) And for many years she sang mainly bel canto roles...and mainly Rossini and Mozart.

I bought it yesterday. It´s very good.
My ranking of Bartolis best 5 albums:
1.) Opera Proibita
2.) The Vivaldi Album
3.) Sacrificum
4.) Gluck album
5.) Maria
That´s what I believe, but maybe Sacrificum will raise a bit...

I would rank Opera Probita number one as well, what a wonderful wonderful cd.
