i must say i am a christian but i like this video and i do hope i can go see it when it comes to the thearter or atleast comes to home video. i may be christian but i also like things from the pagan wicca and buddha paths and i also like the supernatural and the paranormal. for to not question is foolishness and to be blind. merry meet and merry part and until we merry meet again Blessed Be everyone
I am an agnostic but lean towards no supreme beings but I prefer pagans to chrisitans as Polytheists they are more generally tolerant, and accepting then Christians.
Great comments, people. From my research, thanks to John Lash, the writer and others, I have seen that the entire Mediterranean civilization was filled with Mystery schools, druidism, paganism, Buddhism, and Gnosticism. There were highly realized Christian monks, but it was the Holy Roman Empire that did all of them in. Politics and ignorance killed the great lib ray, which was actually a university that studied engineering, math, astronomy, as well has the Nature of Mind and other philosophies.
I said to myself years ago, after studying Hypatia who was the embodiment of a civilization where the Eleusinian Initiations showed us the eternal spirit within us, that when a movie is made of this blessed woman's life, it will be the end of the darkness cast over our world by the evil religions of Abraham.

What's the likelihood this will be a remotely historically accurate representation? Hollywood seeks to romanticise all film subject matter regardless of the truth, people in seats is, at the end of the day, more important than fact.
I think what's sad is that the sentiments and arguments expressed by the people in Hypatia's day as portrayed by this wonderful film is being repeated almost exactly today by BOTH sides of the fence in forums just like this one. It seems people either hate religious people or non-religious people after seeing this movie. Either way people are still hating each other. I find that ironic, especially given the subject of the film.
@MACEDONIANFONTS I know it's a year ago since you posted this. Still I need to reply. Have you, in general, as little trouble with tweaking history as you display here? Under Roman occupation, the Greeks had pretty much become passive in science and philosophy. After Augustine and the collapse of the Roman Empire, the former was the only one being taught as philosophy and City of God is not much in the way of that. Christians went about their business of persecuting every non-Christian.
@eblonk10 Friend, I am sorry but your caricature of the spread of christian philosophy and literature is inaccurate and incorrect. The ONLY social institution that held western civilization together after the Fall of Rome was the monasteries. Furthermore, Augustine's works extend far past City of God (i.e. The Confessions, Enchiridion of Faith, Hope, and Love, On Free Choice of the Will, etc.) plus Boethius, John Cassian, Saint Benedict, Pope Gregory the Great leading to Aquinas and company.
You mean after Hypatia, All the Greek Hellenistic Ideals vanished? where exactly did you learn that little bit of misinformation. The Hellenistic ideals of Science,Astronomy, engineering, and Knowledge lived on through the Byzantine Greeks.. The religion changed thats all.
every time when the religions... arise, the women were stayed at the back of the men...what a pity...as a woman mathematician,i have more than respect for her...she was the one in the men world at those times, and she gave a fight with this mentality of the religion from this way...i havent watched it yet, but i hope hollywood didnt take the only chaos, passion, and so on parts of her life and of that ancient time, i hope we can see some of her studyings ,at least as titles...
Hypatia was the last true representative of the Neoplatonic School of Alexandria. She was the perfect embodiment of the Greek Civilization: a free thinking spirit, philosopher and mathematician. Through the eyes of the fanatic Christians, she was not only regarded as pagan, but being an extremely educated and emancipated woman, she was a real threat for the new doctrine of Christianity.
At last a tribute about this exceptional woman, after 16 centuries.
Maybe she should have spoken out against the treatment of Christians. At that time Christians were fed to lions for sport and entertaiment.. Where was Hypatia then? she was not a free thinker. her religion was Atheism and she mocked all those who believed differently.
I have nothing against her intellectual prowes though.
She was a renown ANTI Christian.. You live by the sword you die by the sword.
Indeed. Throwing Christians to the lions was a Roman practice, for pure amusement and entertainment, but Hypatia lived in Alexandria. You draw arbitrary conclusions about the message I'm trying to give.
I have studied Christianity from a profound and psychological perspective. If you had the time and interest to watch my videos on Christianity, you would post a very different comment.
However, this doesn't change the fact that Hypatia was the last true representative of the Hellenistic Era.
Speak up for the Christians? Are you kidding here? Hypatia lived 370-415, by her time, the Empire was thoroughly Christianized so Christians were NOT being persecuted in fact pagans were in turn now the victims of persecution. Any philosopher as Hypatia was would have denounced the marginalization of factions in society-be it Pagan or Christian. Dust off your History Textbooks and read before you proclaim certain truths.
I can't wait to see this, however I may have to wait until it's on dvd as I haven't heard any release dates in the U.S. How much do they show of how she is killed in this movie? I hope they show everything because it really makes a good point how brutal her death was.
@EMUUMFan Hypatia was an atheist, though. A real, full out, no-gods-at-all-atheist. The movie thematizes that in all clarity, and it is historically accurate. There were quite a few Naturalists in ancient greece, and some that even though they believed in a higher power, they believed that higher power to ba a *natural* force rather than a supernatural concept. Pretty much all of the atomists belong to that latter category.
@EMUUMFan But there is another problem, for early Cristians (and Judes aswell) people that didn't believe in Jesus (or Jehova in judaism) were Pagans for Cristians (or judes), they didn't know the word atheist as far as i know this world firstly appeared in the 18th century.
te, he yeah, the protests against movies like 'Harry Potter' & the 'Golden Compass' are small fries compared to the knee-jerk reactions by todays Christian mobs I sense will be launched when they find out about this movie.
From what I can tell, this movie about Hypatia really appears to be based on a true story.
She was a teacher and ahead of her time, She was Killed for more, because she was an atheist, she was murdered because at the time, like today more or less, the world was governed by Men and you couldn't have an intelligent woman. In my Opinion Mary Magdalene was a teacher and the same happened to her, except she was tarnished by men and labeled her as a Whore, becos she was a woman, Oh FYI. The Bible was written by Male Chauvinistic brains. Paradoxically its happening with Muslim religion.
