The 904 had an eight-valve, four cylinder engine. Final horsepower, according to my SCCA sponsor Lynn Coleman who drove one, was 210 after the factory re-designed the head sometime after the first season of racing, 1964. I got to sit in it. Pulled a leg muscle getting out.
Other 914 handling, that 16v 904 motor makes a LOT more power. Even with that it makes the car handle differently. The 904 should handle better in theory, based upon that it was a purpose race car initially. 914 was a street car from the start.
