I think pretty much what it comes down to is, he knew what he was doing was going to get him into trouble eventually, but his cause was to stand up for what he and his many followers feel is really right. Whether his actions are "right" or not, is a matter of personal opinion. Prohibition accomplishes next to nothing and is an overproductive effort, where more energy could be concentrated "frying bigger fish". But yeah, it's a complex issue to a certain degree.
