My absolute favorite band in college in early 90s. The single most influential band of those years for me. A kid growing up in Philly. Used to catch them and other Merge bands at the Trocadero everytime they came through. Very excited about upcoming show at Troc in September!
"Underated" Why...the fans loved them, the critics loved them. I mean, they were what they were....right? Great band, great albums , great little DIY setup, re-inventing traditional music trade routes They were in Rolling Stone Mag, on Letterman etc.
If anything, perhaps what you mean to say is they were under-exposed??? No...the greater world certainly didn't know who Superchunk were, thats right. That's the fun of it though right, tell all your friends and let the legend grow on its own.
@Jizbam well , yeah , that was kinda my point. Some dude referred to them as "under-exposed" and I was mentioning that, I kinda think they like it that way. Never had aspirations of the perils of "major Label Land" like so many other artists of that day who got signed in the 92-95 period and ended up in ruin. They DIY'ed it the whole way and reaped quite a nice little bit of success in there own right. Going to see them kick some ass in Montreal in 2 weeks...yee ha!!!
I remember living in Raleigh, NC in '94 - we drove over to Chapel Hill to watch this great band play, as I was watching them, I suddenly realized how terrible our band was... Great memories of those times. (IF you're reading this Lynn, hello)
Ok, '90 something; Babes In Toyland cancel. Cat's Cradle last minute fill-in. Best show ever and the start of a life long obsession. Still the best show out there! I love these guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When/where was this? I saw them in '96 at the 40 watt in Athens and was hooked. Still an incredible band, but this is definitely their best era

@PappyHab Read their Wikipedia page. The band simply refused to work with major labels.

I'm glad I have the scrapes to prove, to prove it was me who fell.
Easily the most under-rated band of the last 20 years... wish they would play together more often.

Clearly, Superchunk could win awards for how underrated they were... I loved this band...
